While New Zealand are seeking their sixth title, their first opponents, Mexico, are not expected to progress past pool play.
But coach Eddie Kohlhase is warning against under-estimating the Mexicans.
“Obviously, the opening game is always a big one at the world championship and the nerves are certainly on edge,” he said.
“It’s really important to get off to a good start and build some momentum.”
New Zealand’s last two warm-up games have produced a 4-3 win over the Czech Republic and a more comfortable 9-0 result in five innings against South Africa.
As part of the build-up, Kohlhase has been integrating veteran Jarrad Martin as a pitching option behind the four front-liners.
He said another experienced campaigner, Nathan Nukunuku, who joined the squad as cover for injured captain Rhys Casley, had added a new dimension to the offence with his speed.
Kohlhase remained hopeful that Casley, whose strength in his throwing arm has increased day by day, might yet take to the diamond as a fielder.
