Cal A’s fall to defending champs, finish 5th at ISC World

The California A’s four game win streak at the 2013 ISC World Tournament came to an end, at the hands of defending champions Jarvis Hallman Twins, and with it, a successful run at this year’s tournament which saw the team win five games overall against two losses, for fifth place in the world. The A’s finished with a 5-2 record.

After winning their morning contest against the Kegel Black Knights from Fargo North Dakota, the Cal A’s needed one more win to make it to the Final Four, and the final day of the tournament. But the roadblock prove to be a resilient, veteran Jarvis Hallman Twin team, which outlasted the A’s 9-6.

The A’s did not go quietly into the night, battling back to tie the game twice, overcoming 3-1 and 5-3 deficits. But each time, Jarvis countered to take back the lead, eventually winning out, 9-6.

The lion’s share of the pitching duties in the turn and fell on pitcher/player Derek Mayson, who stepped up when Argentine ace Lucas Mata was sidelined with an injury to his shoulderinjured his shoulder in the team’s second game of the tournament. Mayson was stellar, pitching for complete-game victories before running out of gas in his fifth game of the tournament, on Friday afternoon against Jarvis. Josh Johnson, who is battling injuries of his own came on in relief and battled along with his team before coming up short in the 9-6 loss.
