Rain hampers ASA national event

ELKHART — While the tournament itself got strong reviews, the heavy rains of the weekend but a damper on the American Softball Association Men’s Fast Pitch Open East National Championship at Riverview Park.
Hard work by the Elkhart Parks & Recreation Department got the diamonds back into shape after Saturday morning’s rain, but two storms that came through the area Sunday afternoon finally put an end to the tournament.
“We may have been able to get the diamonds back into playing shape by 6 p.m. or so, but by then you’re looking at possibly being here ’til 10 and a couple teams had long drives home, so they decided to just let it go,” Elkhart softball director Ed Bellows said. “You can plan for everything, but there is nothing you can do about the weather, and unfortunately we had more than our share of rain this weekend.”
Due in part to the rain, Blue’s Fast Pitch of Hastings, Mich., was declared the winner of the Blue Division with a 3-0 record. Click here to continue reading at the Elkhart Truth.
