Argentina grabs bronze with win over host Czech Republic in 2018 Intercontinental Cup at Prague

Argentina nabbed the bronze medal Saturday in the inaugural  Intercontinental Cup in Prague, Czech Republic, with a run-ahead rule win over the host Czechs, 10-0.

Mariano Montero was the winning pitcher, while Michal Holobradek suffered the loss.  After two scoreless innings, Argentina’s powerful offense exploded for 6 runs in the third inning and 4 more in the fourth to end the contest.  Czech starter Holobradek was charged with the first five runs, but reliever Jonas Mach fared no better, surrendering five more.

Santiago Carril had the biggest day of all for the Argentines, going 3 for 3, with a single, triple and home run, 5 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Despite the loss, the host Czech Republic can be pleased with the success of the inaugural tournament at Prague, a prelude to hosting next year’s WBSC World Championship, the first time that the event will be held in Europe, where the sport continues to grow.   The Czechs knocked off the USA, as well as their European rival, Denmark, to finish fourth in the six team event, which saw most of the world’s top teams, except for Canada (who was holding their own National Championship event at the same time) and Venezuela.
