Dominican Republic Defeats Philippines 5-2
The Dominican Republic topped the Philippines 5-2 on Wednesday in a World Cup Qualifer clash at Hermosillo, Mexico.
The Dominican team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd when Juan Arias hit a solo home run to deep left center field. They extended their advantage to 5-0 with a 4-run outburst in the 4th inning. The big blows were a 2-RBI double by Yoel Federico De Mota De La Cruz and a 2-run homer off the bat of Pablo Modesto Figuereo Ortíz.
The Philippines got on the board with single runs in the 4th and 6th innings, but could get no closer. In the 4th, Justine John Rosales drove in Mark Janzen Gaspi with an RBI double. Then in the 6th, John Norwen Rosendal Lucas plated Gaspi with an RBI single.
Dominican starter Yan Carlos Gonzales Diaz earned the win with a stellar outing, allowing just 1 run on 6 hits over 7 innings while racking up 13 strikeouts.
