Venezuela, Dominican Republic and Host Mexico Notch Wins on Day 1
The opening day of the WBSC XVIII Men’s Softball World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico featured thrilling matches and a spectacular opening ceremony at Fernando Ortiz and Mundialistas Hermosillenses stadiums.
In the first game, Venezuela defeated Australia 7-0, thanks to an impressive complete game performance by winning pitcher Maiker Pimentel, who allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 12. Pimentel was also named the Player of the Day for his outstanding effort. Luiger Pinto and David Galena led the offense for Venezuela.
The Dominican Republic started strong with a 5-2 win over the Philippines. Winning pitcher Yan Carlos Gonzalez pitched seven quality innings, striking out 13 and giving up six hits and one run. Juan Arias and Pablo Figuereo homered for the Dominican squad, while Justine Rosales drove in the Philippines’ first run. Jehanz Coro took the loss for the Philippines.
Hosts Mexico earned a convincing 7-0 win against Czechia in five innings. Winning pitcher Carlos Parra pitched four scoreless innings with six strikeouts, and Jordan Solorio led the offense with a homer and four RBIs. Jakub Osicka was handed the loss for Czechia.
The tournament continues with more exciting matches lined up in the coming days as teams battle for a spot in the playoffs. Day 1 set the tone for a competitive and thrilling Men’s Softball World Cup.
