Australia’s best men’s fastpitch softball players have gathered in Canberra marking the start of their campaign to defend the World Championship they won in 2009.
A number of quality players are available for Australia to contest the International Fastpitch Test Series between Australia (ranked 1st), New Zealand (ranked 2nd) and Argentina (ranked 7th) beginning Wednesday 8th December, 2010 at Hawker International Softball complex.
Pitcher Adam Folkard who featured prominently in Australia’s World Championship win won’t be participating in this series as he has chosen to withdraw from the Australian Men’s Squad due to the uncertainty surrounding the recent implementation of a pitching rule.
Softball Australia has approached the International Softball Federation requesting clarification of what constitutes a legal pitching action in relation to changes to a rule that has recently been recommended for implementation. In the interim Softball Australia and Softball ACT out of concern for the future of their pitchers have engaged the services of a biomechanist from the Australian Institute of Sport to analyse the action of their world class pitchers.
“Once we have received clarification from the International Softball Federation on the exact interpretation of the pitching rule we will be in a better position to determine our next course of action,’ said Softball Australia Manager of High Performance Julie Anderson.
“The changes to the rule were endorsed at the previous International Softball Congress by the participating countries. Softball Australia voted against the implementation of the pitching rule and requested their objection to be minuted,” said Anderson. “We are confident of a favourable response from the International Softball Federation with our pitchers benefiting from a biomechanical analysis that captures what the naked eye can’t possibly see at a world class level,” Anderson said.
The Australian players have been split into two teams; Aussie Green and Aussie Gold with the two teams due to play each other in the first match of the Test Series.
The Australian teams also face the New Zealand Black Sox for the first time since the final of the 2009 ISF XII World Championships where the Australian’s defeated the Black Sox to become the World Champions and Gold medallists.
Argentina who finished seventh at the 2010 World Championships will be using the Test Series against the two highest ranked Men’s teams as valuable preparation for the 2013 World Championships.
The Test Series will feature fourteen matches and concludes with the final to be played Friday 10th December, 2010.
“The Test Series will be a great opportunity for the local community to experience Men’s Softball at the elite level, ‘said Softball ACT Chief Executive Officer Jon Wells.
“The Tests will also give Softball ACT and Softball Australia the opportunity to show our international competitors our world class Softball facility at Hawker, ‘ Wells said.
