Why do so many tourney’s limit the amount of teams?
If we can have more teams it helps the sport. We put on a Fathers day tourney in Texas and the more the better!
I think sometimes it’s a limit imposed by the number of fields and time slots available. With longer airport security lines to deal with, a number of tournaments are scheduling championship games earlier on Sunday. The “first 12 in” also encourages teams to get their entry fees in early to guarantee a spot in the tournament, and provides an element of fairness for “first come, first served”. The popular AAU Int’l tournament is a good example of that, with a waiting list of teams wanting in every year. But many agree with you, more is better, if there is a way to get them in. Last year’s Best of the West filled up its slots, but expanded to accomodate additional teams. The AAU tournament started in 2000 with 8 teams, went to 16, then 24, 32, 36, and 40 for the past few years, and is stretching to 48 this year, though the trade-off is another day of work missed and increased costs to sponsors. How many teams did you have for last year’s Father’s Day tournament? How many fields did you use?
