Thanks to Dennis Dosman for this recap:
Editor’s note: This recap is from Dennis Dosman, a frequent contributor to this site. He is from Ontario, and covers Ontario fastball, so the story is written from that vantage point. We hope to receive or find a recap from or by a Newfoundland writer to post as well.

Ontario OASA Champions, the Kitchener Hallman Cubs were silver medalist at the Canadian Fastpitch Championships in Fredericton NB this weekend.

The Hallman Cubs lost 5 – 0 to the 3 Cheers Pub representing Newfoundland/Labrador, in a rain shortened championship game Sunday afternoon. Don Scott took the loss for the Kitchener squad. Sean Cleary posted the win.

The Cubs entered the championship game with a 7 – 3 won loss record. 3 Cheers were at 8 – 0

The championship playoff round on Saturday was much like last years Canadian championship won by the Kitchener Hallman Twins….with back to back to back to back wins to move into the final bracket.

On Saturday the Hallman Cubs put 3 wins together; 8 – 1 over Nova Scotia, 5 – 2 over Scarborough Force, and 7 – 2 over Quebec. On Sunday, Kitchener completed the streak with a 9 – 1 semi final victory over the Newfoundland Labrador #1 team..Mark’s Hitmen…9 – 1 …setting up the rematch of last years championship game in Owen Sound……Kitchener vs Newfoundland ….this time Cubs vs 3 Cheers…

Tuesday evening 3 Cheers beat the Hallman Cubs 3 – 1

In other pool play games, the Cubs were winners over PEI’s Bud Lite Fawcetts, 8 – 7 , 6 -3 over Nova Scotia, 4 – 3 over Moncton Cardinals. Loses for the Cubs were to Quebec 5 – 2 and Fredericton 4 – 3 …

Sean Cleary, winning pitcher for NL over Ontario in 2012 Sr. Canadians final.

3 Cheers struck quickly in the opening inning…with back to back to back home runs by Jeff Ellsworth, Ian Ferhman, and Steve Mullaley. Rain delayed the start of the bottom half of the first inning for 45 minutes. Dale Levy, Cubs centre fielder led off the 2nd inning with a walk, Adam Hiller singled, Jason Sandford sacrificed them to scoring positions, but Sean Cleary got N/L out of trouble with 2 strike outs… In the 3rd, Ellsworth on first, hit by pitch, and one out, Steve Mullaley doubled for the 4th run. Jason Hill doubled to score Mullaley…Newfoundland/Labrador on top 5 – 0.

Top of the 4th, and rain threatening again, Dale Levy singled and Adam Hiller singled. The rain continued through Hiller’s at bat and with Jason Sandford in the batters box, the skies opened and the umpires cleared the field around 3 pm…The game was declared over shortly before 6pm, 3 1/2 innings in, with 3 Cheers winning 5 – 0.

Dan Mitchell led the Cubs offensively..467 batting average, 15 ABs, 7 hits, a double and a triple and 2 homers..5 RBIs,

Brandon Horn batted .344, 32 ABs 11 hits, 2 doubles, a triple and 2 homers, 9 RBIS,

Allan Phibbs .308 26 ABs 8 hits, a triple and 4 home runs…9 RBIs

Dale Levy 6 RBIs, 31 ABs 9 hits and 3 doubles.

Scott Wagar led the Hallman Cubs in ERA, 0.72, he had 1 win and 1 loss, and 10 ks

Don Scott had a 1.81 ERA, 27 Ks, 2 wins – 1 loss

Paul Koert, 2.59 ERA, went 27 innings for the Cubs, had 43 Ks,

Ryan French, 3.71 ERA, 12 Ks, allowed only 12 hits.

Hallman Cubs sponsor Jim Hallman said, “It was really good to see the Cubs step up. The team pulled together during the tournament”….Jim continued “There were a lot of good players there and no one showed any of our guys up”

“Silver is not what we wanted but still in a few weeks I am sure they will appreciate what they did”

Congratulations to the Hallman Cubs on an outstanding Canadian tournament, and congratulations to 3 Cheers Pub on Newfoundland’s Canadian championship.
