Fred Hanker, Long Beach Black Sox Taking Time off in 2011

Monday, October 18th, 2010

From Fred Hanker’s Long Beach Black Sox Men’s Fastpitch Softball Facebook page:

I have decided to not have The Long Beach Black Sox next year. I have run this team for 6 years and I need a much deserved break. I will be playing with other teams in 2011. Thanks to all our fans for your support. I will continue to maintain the site and make posts so stay tuned. I may at some point next year reunite the team. Thanks for all your kind words

Editor’s note:

A well deserved break for Fred. He’s been the driving force for the team — and for much of fastpitch in So Cal for the past six years, both on the field and behind the scenes, somehow finding a way to manage and run the team, and yet still focus and be among the top hitters in So Cal, seemingly every single weekend. The list of players wearing the Black Sox uniform for those six year is long and distinguished. Thanks Fred to giving so many players a place to play, and learn the game — both young players and old. Like the Pittsburgh Pirates of old, it was always fun to see which uniform the team would don on a given day (just how many different version were there?) The Black Sox blended friendship and talent, with more tournament victories than one can count, a testament to Fred’s leadership. Fred’s website, his facebook page and the hundreds of photos and stories posted kept us up on fastpitch in So Cal. We’ll miss seeing the Sox in 2011 Fred, but it is a well deserved break indeed.

Santa Rosa at the NAFA 45+

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Information courtesy of Herb Dower

It was one loss and out for Santa Rosa Fastpitch in the NAFA West Masters 45-and-over tournament held in Carson City, NV, but that was good enough for a third place finish.

Santa Rosa won its first three games to land the No.1 seed in Sunday’s single elimination finals, but then lost 14-3 to Ladner Masters of Canada to be eliminated.

Landner was scheduled to play either the Tulsa Gray Sox (The No.2 Seed) or the Oregon Masters for the championship. Tulsa also posted a 3-0 record going into Sunday’s championships.

Santa Rosa opened play with a 13-2 win over the Oregon Masters Friday night, edged Landner’s 2-1 Saturday afternoon, and followed that with a 16-6 win over Grants Pass, OR, Blue Hares to earn the No. 1 seed.

First baseman Rick Kane and centerfielder Dana Faccini of Santa Rosa were named to the All-World team. Kane his a lofty .667 (8-for-12) with three RBI and four runs scored while Faccini went 4-for-11 (.364). Other top hitters were Tim Grund (7-for-13, .538) with 7 runs scored, six RBI and two home runs; Tony Lopez (5-for-9, .556), Tom Dower (5-for-13, .385 with five RBI and four runs); Galen George (4-for-10, .400); and Gary Dower (3-for-7, .429).

Pitcher Matt Smith had a 2-0 record to Santa Rosa and Jim Fleck was 2-1.

In Sunday’s loss to Ladner, catcher Troy Grow led a 14-hit attack for the winners by going 4-for-4 and Brian Mandeville and Don Cawthron hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to quickly erase a 3-1 deficit. Sam Aldridge, who earlier lost a 2-1 decision to Santa Rosa, was the winning pitcher.

Missouri’s fastpitch leaders planning for bigger better boy’s tournaments in 2011

Friday, September 10th, 2010

From OttoInFocus:

WINSTON, MO – Some men would just throw up there hands and say, “enough’s, enough, it just isn’t meant to be.”

But you won’t hear that from Eric Lewis of Winston, Missouri. The father of two fastpitch-playing sons is determined to keep the boy’s fastpitch game alive – at least in his part of the country – northwest Missouri.

Though denied participation in the 2010 ASA Boy’s National Tournament in the 10-under and 12-under age divisions because of a lack of teams to offer competition in the two brackets, Lewis is undeterred for the 2011 tournaments to be held in Mankato, Minnesota.

And even though his teams couldn’t play at Rolla in the 2010 event, his boys played non-the-less.

“I stayed home and played a fantastic game between my two boys teams,” said Lewis, who is the principal, athletic director, and boy’s softball coach at Winston High School. “I had nineteen little boys age 12 and under play a scrimmage game….we had uniforms, umpires, PA announcing, etc. Great time was had by all.”

And as for the ASA national in Mankato next year?

“I am planning on going to Mankato and taking a 10-Under and a 12-Under team. I am also talking to a couple dads about putting a 14-Under team together. And I’m sure my brother-in-law, Greg “Skipper” McQuinn will have at least an 18-Under
and 23-Under (this year he had those two and a 16-Under).”

Lewis added that it’s possible that northwest Missouri will have a team in every division of the ASA boy’s and young men’s tournament.

And he sees a glimmer of hope that he and McQuinn aren’t alone in the push to revive the boy’s and young men’s sides of the sport.

“I saw some of the younger boys division dads and coaches playing fastpitch in Des Moines in the NAFA World Series tournaments,” he said. “They spoke very confidently of taking teams to Mankato (and) some spoke of taking multiple teams.

“Let’s try and reverse the tide and have a tournament with more teams in every age division.”

Dolan & Murphy wraps up season

Friday, September 10th, 2010

The Dolan & Murphy Shamrocks men’s softball team wrapped up its season last month by competing in the International Softball Congress World Tournament in Midland, Mich.
It was one of three national or international tourneys in which the team competed.

The Aurora Fastpitch Softball Association’s men’s entry defeated Carey’s of Midland 9-2 behind winning pitcher Ales Jetmar, getting a home run and five RBIs from Dave Perkins and two hits each from Robert Reder and Cooper Carson, but lost three other decisions to be eliminated from the tourney.

It dropped the Shamrocks to the ISC II tournament where they went on to tie for third place. D&M defeated Palermo, Ontario, Canada 2-1, topped Ashland, Ohio 5-2 and Toronto 5-1 before falling to Wyevale Tribe of Canada 3-1 in the semifinal. Mark Kleffner earned all-tournament honors.

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Kitchener Rivershark Twins earned a measure of redemption when they downed the hosts 6-1 in the title game at the Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship on Sunday.

The defending national champion R-Twins stumbled in their quest to collect three consecutive world club team titles a couple of weeks ago, settling for second place, but were not to be denied at the national championship.

Rowan Lam collected two RBI for the winners who roared undefeated through the weeklong tournament.

Hurricane Earl forced Saturday’s playoff round to be contested on Friday, but not even that could deter the R-Twins who recorded their first Canadian title in the team’s four-decade history last year in St. Thomas.

Don Scott and Paul Koert combined for the championship win. The duo scattered six hits while R-Twins ace Todd Martin remained on the shelf with a shoulder injury.

Familiar foe Frank Cox absorbed the loss. He allowed three earned runs through three and a third innings for the hosts, known as the Gahan House Fawcetts.

ASA/USA Boys Fastpitch Camp

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

From USA Softball’s Doug Lindaman:

Thirty nine young male fastpitch players participated in the ASA/USA Softball junior men’s development camp in Rolla, Missouri on Wednesday, August 4. The camp was held at the Ber Juan Sportsplex one day prior to the ASA 16-Under, 18-Under and 23-Under national tourneys. The 39 players represented 12 states and all are age-eligible (born in 1993 or later) for the next ISF junior men’s world championship in Argentina in 2012. After the camp, all 39 boys participated in the 16-U nationals on Thursday and Friday, August 5-6.

Catchers received individual instruction for 45 minutes, beginning the day at 8:30 am. Pitchers, many of whom are already receiving monthly video feedback from the USA coaching staff, began a 45 minute session at 9:15. The remaining camp participants began at 10 am and rotated between workout stations for hitting, bunting and fielding. After a two hour lunch break, necessitated by the 100 degree heat and high humidity, players were divided into three teams and a two hour controlled scrimmage was conducted.

Over 90 boys from 25 states have now expressed a desire to be considered for the next USA junior men’s team. Although there are only a small number of boys club teams in a handful of states, many age-eligible boys are gaining experience by playing in men’s fastpitch leagues and have found out about the potential for playing on the USA Softball national team through various internet web sites and social media outlets, as well as a very active recruiting effort by the USA junior men’s coaching staff.

USA Softball junior men’s head coach Tim Lyon was assisted by coaching staff members Scott Standerfer and Gary Mullican, along with selection committee member Doug Lindaman, in directing the camp activities. “We were very pleased with the turnout, the enthusiasm and the skill level of these athletes” said Lyon.

“It is exciting to see as we look forward to the next ISF world championship only two years down the road.”
