The Blackburn Men’s Fastball League (BMFL) is preparing for its 27th season, one which could see its first expansion in several years.

“Our registration will begin in early March,” said BMFL President Wayne Hunter. “After our exciting playoffs in 2007, we can’t wait for the snow to melt to get back on the ball diamond.”

For the first time in more than a decade, the league is looking to expand, said Hunter. Currently sitting at eight teams – each with colourful names like the Ball Bangers, Guzzlers, Stan’s Diner Draughts and Good ol’ Boys – Hunter says the league is looking to add one more to the mix, possibly as early as this season.

Many young players who have graduated from Orléans’ minor fastball program are expected to join the men’s league, said BMFL board member Tyler Cox.

“We are making a concerted effort to recruit new members,” said Cox. “We welcome everyone, including first-time fastball players.”

The BMFL will hold two formal registration sessions. The first is on Tuesday, March 4, from 7-9 p.m. at the Blackburn Arms Pub on Innes Road in Blackburn Hamlet. The second is on Wednesday, March 5, from 7-9 p.m. at Wally’s Bistro and Bar on Innes Road, in Blackburn Hamlet.

Founded in 1982, the Blackburn Men’s Fastball League is a recreational fast-pitch softball league based in Ottawa’s Blackburn Hamlet. Its membership spans the region and includes players from 18-years-old through 50 and over. It is completely volunteer-run.

For more information about the BMFL’s registration, please contact BMFL Executive Vice-President Steve Bovey at 613-824-1435 or stq_bovey@hotmail.com.

Introducing Ashland OH Stockpack

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Ashland STOCKPACK (formerly the Ashland Merchants) have completed a successful off season overhaul that involved much more than just a name change. We have added five seasoned players to an already strong core of players in hopes of making a serious run at the ISC II title in Appleton this August. Leading the new additions is pitcher Tyron McKinney. Many will remember Ty from his exploits as a young gun with the Ashland Coors Light team before he played for multiple season with the Midland Explorers, followed by a season with Ashland MVD Sports. About Those AAU Photos…..

Monday, February 18th, 2008

If you are among those wondering what happened to this year’s AAU tournament photos, they will be “coming soon”. As we mentioned in an earlier post, Maddy’s computer crashed, hence the delay. She finally got it back from the shop and is hard at work sorting through several thousand shots, and prepping the best for online display. We’ll update you here when they’re up. In the meantime, here is one of So Cal’s Todd Budke, with the Broken Bow, NE squad from this year’s set:

2008 Boys of Summer – July 11-13, 2008

Monday, February 18th, 2008

From

Boys of Summer 2008
Denmark, WI, USA

Hello all. As depressing as the daily snowfall and frigid temperatures are here in Wisconsin, I do have a little news on this year’s Boys of Summer Open Tournament to warm up your day. The dates are July 11-13, 2008. The event will again be held at Circle Tap and two diamonds in Denmark Memorial Park. Denmark is a short 15 minute ride south of Green Bay directly on I-43.

This year’s even will again host 16 of the best teams. Normally, I could say best North American teams but we do have a South American team this year. There will be 4 pools of 4 with eight teams making it to a single elimination tournament. One playoff game at CT on Saturday night, the other quarterfinals are 10 AM on Sunday, SemiFinals at noon, Finals at 2PM at Circle Tap.

I hope you can all come out and enjoy on of the strongest and exciting tournaments of the summer and experience fastpitch in one of the most electric atmospheres in the game. For those of you have never seen the facility I hope to have an aerial photo posted on our website in the coming months. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments and I’ll help you out as best I can. Darren Derricks will again serve as Tournament Director.

Here is the outstanding field teams:

1. Farm Tavern-Madison, WI
2. SoCal A-1 Bombers-Yucaipa, CA
3. Circle Tap-Denmark, WI
4. TownLine-Green Bay, WI
5. MinnDak Millers-Fargo, ND
6. Patsy’s-New York, NY
7. Gremlins-Broken Bow, NE
