Lumberkings Live from Canada Tonight on Ballparkradio

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Update: The broadcasts have concluded at 11pm EDT, 8pm PDT. The Niagara Snappers won the first game, 2-0 over the visiting Lumberkings. In the nightcap, Gerry Kennedy came up big with a 3 run homer in the 7th to break a 1-1 tie with the Golden Horsehoe Fastball League All Stars, as the Lumberkings won, 4-2.

Just a reminder that, technology willing, we are planning a broadcast doubleheader on BallPark Radio tonight from Lancaster Park in St. Catharines starting at 7 pm eastern.

That translates to 4pm and 6pm for those of us on the West Coast.

Gm 1 Niagara Snappers vs California Lumberkings
Gm 2 GHFL All-Stars vs California Lumberkings

Kyle Smith and Matt Bedrosian will man the booth.

Fans should be able to email us at live (at) ballparkradio.com.

Ballparkradio broadcaster Kyle Smith will be in Niagara, Ontario to broadcast two games live at 7pm and 9pm EST:

7pm EST – Niagara Snappers vs. the California Lumberkings
9pm EST – Golden Horseshoe Fastball League (GHFL) All Stars vs. the Lumberkings.

Kyle was the lead broadcaster at this year’s AAU International Tournament, part of the crew that broadcast 10 games in four days. Kyle is the youngest and newest member of the Ballparkradio crew, having started with the 2006 ISC II Tournament of Champions, and has quickly become a fan favorite. He is a graduate of the School of Broadcasting at Mohawk College in Ontario, Canada, and currently resides in Hickson, Ontario.

No games have ever been broadcast from the Snapper Shootout before, and arrangements are still underway for the internet connection, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed. Be sure to check the Ballparkradio website for further updates on Thursday night.

Lumberkings, Snappers and GHFL All-Stars in Melissa Fundraiser

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Just an update on the fundraiser fastball exhibition games that will be taking place at Lancaster Park on June 5th. First game gets underway at 7pm and pits the Niagara Snappers against the California Lumberkings, second game begins at 9pm with the GHFL all-stars hosting the Lumberkings.

A Ball Park Radio (www.ballparkradio.com) broadcast of both games is in the final stages and looks to be on track. Keep checking for more updates. We encourage all players, fans and coaches not only from the GHFL but from all fastball leagues to come down for a night of fastball in one of the most beautiful parks in Ontario and help support a good cause. Storm’s Deli will be on hand serving up hot food and soft drinks and you can purchase tickets to be used to bid on donated items (including a brand new Wilson glove and an Easton ball bag and many more). Also, both the California Lumberkings and the GHFL will be creating T-Shirts to commemorate the night, these will be available to purchase as well.

Background on the Fund Raising Effort

Proceeds from the gate and several activities at the park including a 50-50 draw, silent auction and souvenir sales will be donated to Melissa Brideau. Melissa is the long time girlfriend of Niagara Falls Furyplayer Tommy Watkinson who has played ball in the Niagara Falls Men’s League for the past 15 years. Melissa is stricken with a very aggressive from ofMultiple Sclerosis. Melissa is 35 years old and has reached a point in her illness where a wheelchair or scooter have become her source of mobility. Melissa is having no luck with North American treatment and is traveling toVenezuela to seek treatment from world renowned specialist Dr.Yepetz utilizing rainforest natural therapy. As one can imagine this is a very costly endeavor but one that needs to be explored now. Dr. Yepetz has successfully reversed the effects of MS in many patients and Melissa feels this type of treatment is one of the few remaining options available for her. If treatments go well, Melissa will in all probability be revisiting Venezuela multiple times.

California and Niagara will both be taking part in the 6th annual Snapper Shootout which runs from Friday June 7th- Sunday June 9th. Both teams will be competing along with 14 others to claim more than $3500 in prize money. Previous winners of the Shootout include Niagara Snappers (2004, 2005 winners, 2007 co-winner), The Rise (2006 winner) and the Elora Brewers (2007 co-winners). Another very strong field is set for this year’s tournament.

Ballparkradio on a Cell Phone

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

(click logo to visit Ballparkradio.com website)

While listening to men’s fastball on Ballparkradio can be as easy as a couple of mouse clicks, the main drawback, as compared to “regular radio” is that “internet radio” has not been as portable. We have noticed an increase in “laptop listeners” at the tournaments, both at the field, or more often back at the hotel, which lends some degree of portability, though still requiring some sort of internet connection. But now, with growing sophistication of cell phones, it is getting easier still to listen to Ballparkradio, no matter where you are. A number of cell phones offer web-browsing, and some even run on Windows Mobile and include Windows Media Player. The Palm Treos are among those offering the ability to tune into Ballparkradio. With the prevalence of iPhones, it’s too bad that Windows Media is still like kyptonite to Apple products (though there are some solutions in the works that would permit Windows media to play on them)

The new Sprint Mogul (HTC 6800 shown above) has the best capability that I’ve seen thus far — it runs Windows Mobile 6, and has a built in Windows Media Player just like on your computer. It’s as if you have are listening to a transistor radio in your pocket, allowing you to tune into the broadcast anywhere. Add to that an iPod plug in your rental car (the little 1/8″ place to plug your mp3 player in), and you’ll think you’re listening to XM radio. I arrived in Orlando on Thursday night, while Kyle Smith and Blair Setford were already on the air, but was able to listen to them while driving in from the airport to the Disney complex, and was able to monitor the broadcasts from the bleachers.

In any event, I thought I would pass along the info, in case you are among those with web-enabled cell phones. Listening to men’s fastpitch on Ballparkradio is getting easier all the time.

Below the jump is a list of other Windows Mobile Phones with which you can tune into Ballparkradio. The list is not all-inclusive, but a good starting point. If you have been able to tune into Ballparkradio.com (or want to test by connecting to any streaming broadcast at Sportjuice), drop us a line, jim (at) fastpitchwest.com and tell us what kind of phone it is.

Friday’s Live AAU Broadcasts on Ballparkradio – 11am and 3pm EST

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

(click logo to visit Ballparkradio.com website)

Kyle Smith, Blair Setford and Joe Todd broadcast two opening day games on Thursday in Orlando at the AAU International Men’s Fastpitch Tournament. The Ballparkradio crew will be back in the booth for (at least) two more broadcasts on Friday, featuring the teams shown below.

Click the logo, then the black “Click to Listen” button.

Game times are Eastern Standard Time (EST), adjust for your time zone accordingly.

11:00 a.m.
Niagara Storm Fury of Ontario, Canada vs. Cherokee, NC, USA

3:00 PM
Broken Bow, New York vs. Earl’s Club, WI

The morning game at 11am will feature ISC II Commissoner Blair Setford, but not as a broadcaster, but back in uniform at a player. While known by many these days as ISC Commissioner and ISC II/Ballparkradio broadcaster, Blair has had an extensive career as a player, most recently, with the Mississagua Arrows of the Golden Horseshoe Fastball League (GHFL), a league (and website) he still helps with. No truth to the rumor that he packed the hockey sticks when leaving a frigid Ontario, Canada Thursday for Orlando. Blair insists it was the glove and bat. He is sure to get plenty of good natured ribbing from his broadcast colleagues during Friday’s broadcast.

The afternoon game pits a couple of teams that have finished near the top of the heap in recent AAU tournaments. Broken Bow, New York was a finalist in last year’s tournament, while Tijuana, Mexico has many of the Mexicali players who finshed as runner-up in 2004 and as a Final Four team a year later.

Saturday’s broadast schedule is not yet set – and won’t be until Friday night, after the single elimination pairings are draw.

Sunday’s broadcast schedule will include one of the two semi-final games at 11am, and the 1pm Championship game.

I. S. C. World Tournament Video Archives Now Available

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

I. S. C. Video Archives Now Available

The Streaming and Broadcast Committee of the International Softball Congress is proud to announce that video archives of 37 ISC World Tournament fastball games are now available for on-demand web viewing. Starting with the championship game in the 2004 ISC World Tournament from Fargo, ND, the archival video library includes three games from the final day of the ISC World Tournament in 2005 from Eau Claire, WI., and continues through games from the 2007 World Tournament.

The expanded coverage of World Tournament games began in 2006, made possible by the design and procurement of a live video tele-production system, and by the subsequent launch of ISC-TV. Fifteen games are archived from 2006, and eighteen games are archived from the recently completed 2007 ISC World Tournament in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

To view the games in the archive, go to the ISC Home Page, http://www.iscfastpitch.com/

and click the Sportsjuice / ISC icon at the bottom of the page.

To select a game from the video archive library, either select the most recent archive listed above the archive window, or click the down arrow in the archive window, and select the game of your choice. Viewers must have the Microsoft Windows Media Player installed on their computer, to play the ball game videos. To change between Full Screen mode, or other selectable video sizes, right click in the video image and then select. Once the game starts, to scroll to any point in the video, just click, hold, and drag the video progress slider button to any desired point in the time line.

The best news of all is that the on-demand archives do not appear to suffer from any of the buffering issues that plagued some fans during the streaming of ISC’s live broadcasts from the annual ISC world tournament.

“This public video archive of elite men’s fastpitch softball games is the largest collection in the history of the sport”, said Dave Blackburn, ISC-TV Producer. “It is the result of the hard work and collaborative effort of numerous dedicated ISC commissioners, specialists, and volunteers.”

“Our dual objectives are to satisfy the interests of fastball’s existing fan base while also exposing the sport to those who have not seen elite men’s fastball games of ISC World Tournament caliber”, Blackburn stated. “Hopefully, this exposure will help inspire a new generation of young male athletes to participate in the great sport of fastball,”

ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister was equally delighted. “The ISC is very happy to be able to provide this extensive video access to World Tournament games from 2004 through 2007. We are grateful to Dave Blackburn, and we commend his professionalism and dedication in making these archives a reality. In addition to greatly expanded sport exposure, these archived games could and should be utilized by teams as an outstanding player recruitment tool.”

In a related note, Dave Blackburn has announced that the number of hits for this year’s live broadcasts of I.S.C. World Tournament games totaled 58,963 a substantial increase from the 45,000 such hits during the 2006 World Tournament.
