Notes on a Scorecard at Red Rock

Sunday, May 1st, 2005

After a Broken Bow sweep of the Red Rock tournament in 2004, this year’s Red Rock title appears up for grabs. After twenty four (24) games Saturday, an “Elite Eight” emerged, and head into a single elimination championship bracket, while the other eight will compete in a consolation bracket. Two of the top four seeds were grabbed by Utah teams, who apparently play well with home cooking, Larry Miller Chev and Castlewood. Both finished the day with 3-0 records, as did the other two top seeds, Team Rainey from Southern California and the High Desert Dawgs (FSR). Page Brake also qualified for the championship round, giving host state Utah three teams in the Elite Eight.

It was a day that started with a wild 17-10 game between Mexicali and Castlewood. Castlewood trailed 10-2, but rallied for 15 runs, on a pair of grand slam home runs. Imagine — from down 8 to up 7 in the blink of an eye. The California Savala Painters, with the addition of Dean Holoein and Todd Budke finished 2-1 on the day and earned a spot in the championship bracket today. The highest ranked team in the tournament, the (#19) So Cal Bombers fell to the High Desert Dawgs in their morning game 6-5, but rebounded to win two and a spot in the Elite Eight by taking it out on their next two opponents, 9-1 and 10-0. #20 ranked Team Rainey won three, including two with big Sonny Perkins on the mound. Perkins helped himself out with a 3 run homer in his morning game, and came back to pick up a win in the nightcap, broadcast on ballparkradio.com, an 8-5 win over Page Brake, a game in which Chris Hunt homered twice, and drove in 4 with a pair of rockets, and Bricklen Anderson struck out 5 in the final two innings for a save. And speaking of two-home-run games, Rod Rainey proved the shoulder surgery was a success, hitting two against DeMarini. The doctor’s reports say he’ll be ready to play by June. Despite the loss to Rainey, Page Brake earned a spot in the championship bracket by winning their other two games, including a 1-0 shutout over CR DeMarini, a game that determined which of the two teams went to the Elite Eight and which one wound up in the consolation bracket. #21 ranked Pueblo Bandits struggled to an 0-3 mark, though playing much better than the results indicated, and without the benefit of one of their two Manley aces, Jeremy, who’ll be on the DL until next month with a strained tendon. Pueblo dropped a couple of close games and could have wound up in the championship round wtih a break here or there. Likewise, ISCII #34 ranked River City Rockers, one of the teams that knocked off Pueblo, but lost a crucial game to the Painters by one run. Mexicali bounced back after that 17-10 loss to win two and a spot in the championship bracket. Vannelli’s of Minnesota was in every game, as you’d expect with Darcy Byrne and Blair Ezekiel, but lost a couple close ones to Castlewood and Mexicali by scores 3-1 and 5-4, low scoring affairs compared to most other games. They should be in the hunt in today’s consolation bracket. Raymar, stepping up from the “C” classification after taking third in last year’s Nationals among 70 teams took their lumps, but led in two of their three games and gave fans a look at some promising young players, including pitchers Anthony Martinez and Gerald Pyle, on loan from the Amigos and Rounders, respectively. Todays’ bracket pits Mexicali against Rainey and the So Cal Bombers against Larry Miller, High Desert vs. Page Brake, and the Painters against Castlewood. Or to look at it another way, Mexico vs. So Cal, So Cal vs. Utah, Arizona v. Utah and California v. Utah. However things shake out today, it will provide some exciting fastball for fans at the Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah, and for those listening to the 1pm semifinal and 3pm championship game on ballparkradio.com

Foul Ball Takes Out Maddy’s Lense

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

We are sorry to report that a foul ball took out Maddy’s best zoom lense Saturday night at the Red Rock tournament in St. George. She was in between shooting and helping with lineups for our Ballparkradio.com broadcasts when a hard foul ball struck the lense head on. She did take a fair number of photos before the mishap, but the galleries for Sunday will be more limited as a result.

GHFL All-Stars to Play Australian Junior Men

Friday, February 25th, 2005

My friend (and broadcast partner) Blair Setford sends the following news from the Ontario province in Canada:

[Niagara Falls, Ontario] – The Golden Horseshoe Fastball League is pleased to welcome the Australian Junior Men’s National Team to Niagara Falls, Ontario on Monday June 13, 2005 when the GHFL All-Stars will play the defending World U19 Champions.

Led by young hurler Adam Folkard, the Aussies will follow a day of sightseeing at one of the seven wonders of the world with a doubleheader at Ker Park in Niagara Falls against the best of the GHFL, one of Ontario top intermediate men’s fastball leagues.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase some high quality fastball for fans of the game in the Niagara Region,” said GHFL President Blair Setford.

Several events are being planned to make the evening a special one for players and fans, including a possible webcast.

Behind the Scenes in a Big Way

Saturday, August 21st, 2004

For the past several years, Southern California’s own, David Blackburn has been working behind the scenes at the ISC World Tournament, to bring the games right to our doorstep, wherever in the world that may be. David heads up the Streaming Audio (and perhaps soon, video), delivering live men’s fastpitch/fastball via live stream on the internet.

The pilot program for the ISC World Tournament was tested in the summer of 2001 Best of the West Tournament in Palmdale California, and then put into place for the first time at the 2001 ISC World Tournament, allowing those who could not make the trip to the World Tournment to follow all the action. I had the privilege of sitting in on some of those “beta test” broadcasts from Palmdale, and seeing David’s work on the program first hand.

The growth and popularity of the live audio broadcast program has been remarkable, with audiences now numbering over 10,000 listeners for the World Tournament each year. Post-game interviews broadcast after the games have introduced us to countless players and rising stars of the game, bringing us an up-close look at the tournament, and giving us that “almost-sitting-in-the-ballpark” feel.

Now in its fourth year, the David’s ISC crew, headed up by play by play announcer Ron Chambers and color man Ferdi Nielsen has been broadcasting games all week, including each and every game in the “Sweet Sixteen” playoff round. (In fact, I am listening to the 10am Saturday game between Calgary and Circle Tap as I type this story) David is on the air at times, but always “on” behind the scenes, tending to the production, arranging for sponsors to finance the program and all of the little details in between.

The ISC World broadcasts have become such a fixture at the tournament that it’s hard to remember the day when we didn’t have them. This year in Fargo, North Dakota, the ISC audio broadcast program was expanded to add 18 games from the intermediate level tournament, the ISC-II headed up by new ISC-II commissioner Blair Setford (which I was fortunate to be a part of).

Today (Saturday August 21, 2004) marks another step towards eventual live video broadcasts of the ISC World Tournament, as David coordinates a cable television broadcast of the championship game from Fargo, broadcast to homes in North Dakota and parts of Canada, and testing of streaming broadcast technology for use in future tournaments.

For all of the fastpitch/fastball fans around the world, we say “thanks” for your efforts Dave, exposing the great sport of men’s fastpitch to thousands more and giving the loyal fans our requisite dose live……

Below are the details for the TV broadcast (in case your local pub has satellite capability). Click the title of this story above to visit the “Sportjuice.com” page, which contains “click to listen links” for today’s final games, including the championship game on at 6:30 p.m. central time.

They are doing some testing of streaming video, so you may also want to click the video link on that page to see what they are up to. At last check, I was hearing that they had not yet
resolved some technical issues to do the video stream, but you never know.

Where David Blackburn and streaming media are involved, the future is just a day away.

Men’s Fastball Fans:

If you would like to watch the 2004 ISC World Tournament on live satellite Television at your local Sports Bar, here is what you need to do…

Tell the bartender, or the person who controls the satellite dish that you want to watch

IA – 6 / K 11
Specifics:
Satellite name is IA-6 [Intelsat Americas 6] *This is the
satellite formerly named Telstar 6*
· This is a KU Analog satellite
· Transponder 11

This is the information that Sports Bars will need to show patrons the championship game for free.

On Saturday night August 21, at 6:30 PM Central Standard Time, The ISC
World Championship game will be also broadcast live on ABC Television in North and South
Dakota, and to over one million homes in Manitoba Canada, on Cable TV.

For the first time in the ISC’s 4 year history of streaming fastball games, we will also be experimentingwith streaming video of the Championship via Sportsjuice.com.
More details on that, as plans are finalized. We still have some final technical details to sort out.

Stay tuned, and enjoy all of this ISC Men’s fastball action.
