Farewell Tour for Vin Scully

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

From the Los Angeles Times:

Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully throws out the first pitch at the Dodgers’ home opener on April 14.

BILL PLASCHKE:

Dodgers’ tribute to Vin Scully needs to be a home run
The longtime voice for the franchise says he’ll probably work one season, giving the Dodgers 15 months to send him off the right way.

While the Dodgers’ acquisition of a top starting pitcher before the trading deadline remains woefully uncertain, one thing has become wonderfully clear.

They just got their ace.

The day Vin Scully came in from the cold

The Dodgers aren’t the only ones on a…
Dodgers don’t fret over loss to Cardinals
Hong-Chih Kuo is sharp in return from disabled list
Dodgers’ Jason Schmidt has a rough outing
Vin Scully, thought to be retiring this winter after 60 seasons, said this week he is planning on coming back for one more summer.

Scully, 81, said if he continues to feel well he will work past his landmark year and retire after the 2010 season.

“God willing, I will probably come back for one more year,” Scully said in a phone interview. “At this moment, my health is excellent, and I’m leaning toward one more year.”

And then retire?

“Yes, that makes sense,” he said.

That makes sense? That makes magic.

We now have 15 months to hang on to every syllable, cherish every story, embrace his hellos as we prepare to say goodbye.

“Hi everybody, and a very pleasant evening to you, wherever you may be.”

OK, Dodgers, the microphone is now yours.

You’ve got 15 months to plan a way to properly honor the most beloved employee in franchise history.

More enduring than any player, more impactive than any manager, more intertwined with this city than the color blue, Scully is not only the voice of the team, but its soul.

How the McCourts handle this will say much about not only their credibility as Dodgers owners, but their place among Los Angeles citizens.

Scully’s goodbye tour next year will be so fraught with emotion, well, last week people were crying just at the thought of him leaving in October.

Did you see the unveiling of the new Dodger Stadium video that played between innings during the night of Manny Ramirez’s Bobblebomb?

It featured Scully’s favorite song, “It Had To Be You,” sung by Betty Hutton, accompanied by clips from his long career, from the early years as a redhead to his later years as, well, a redhead.

By the end of it, many in the stands were in tears. Up in the booth, Scully was in shock.

“I had no idea they were doing anything, I was writing in my scorebook when I thought, ‘My, that’s a nice song,’ ” Scully said. “Then I looked up and saw the scoreboard and thought, ‘Oh, goodness.’ ”

After the song ended and the scoreboard showed him sitting there stunned, the place erupted in the first of what will be 15 months worth of farewell standing ovations. “I was kind of overwhelmed,” Scully said.

As always, Scully stood up and applauded back. Then, as always, he summoned a Dodgers official with a question.

“You’re not going to play that thing every night, are you?” he asked.

Scully was told that it would be played infrequently, in keeping with his consistent wishes to remain simply a voice.

This was the Dodgers’ first attempt at a farewell, and it was a good one, but now it’s time to get serious.

If they could build a Mannywood in a couple of weeks, surely they can use the next few months to figure out a way to permanently honor Scully in a way that no Dodger has been honored before.

There was talk about making him a centerpiece of the proposed stadium park, but that idea is several years from the shovel, and Scully deserves the attention now while he and his city can enjoy it.

“Honestly, I have never given that a thought, and I never will,” Scully said. “I’m embarrassed to even think about it.”

Well, I’m not, and here’s my plan.

Turn this Dodgers monument into a statue. Sculpt Scully sitting in a booth, with a microphone and headsets and his ever-present scorebook.

Fill the desk with dozens of ports where fans can plug in headphones and listen to tapes of Scully’s calls. What greater tribute than having Dodgers fans gathered at his feet as one, listening to his voice forever?

Place the sculpture just beyond the Dodger Stadium center-field fence, in the area currently populated by autograph booths and fans chasing batting practice fly balls. Lay down some grass like they do at Yankee Stadium for the center-field Monument Park. Call it Scullyville.

Because there is no main Dodger Stadium walking entrance, this is the best spot to be reached by the most people. You don’t need a ticket to come here, you just need to pay for parking. With all sorts of fans hanging out before every game talking baseball, it feels like Chavez Ravine’s front porch, which would make it the perfect spot for the Dodgers’ storyteller.

Los Angeles would love it. Scully might not love it so much, but nobody understands Dodgers history better than he, and thus he would relent.

I think.

“We are going to honor Vin, but we want to make sure we do so in sync with his wishes,” said Charles Steinberg, club vice president. “Everyone would love to say thank you to him, over and over, but we want to make sure we do it arm in arm with him when the time comes.”

Scully’s time is 15 months. The Dodgers’ time is now.

Editor’s notes:
Readers of the Morning Brief know that I am a lifelong fan of Vin Scully and his Dodger broadcasts. His eventual retirement is a day that we knew would come at some point, though thankfully, it sounds like we’ll have the entire 2010 season to savor his remaining games. I had the privilege this past April to attend a NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) luncheon in Las Vegas, where he was inducted into the NAB Hall of Fame, and was the featured speaker at lunch. He opened with his trademark “Hello everybody”, and shared some memories of his amazing 60 year broadcast career. The photos below were taken at the luncheon.

Note on Streaming Video for ISF XII Men’s World Championships

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Note from Al Doran of Al’s Fastball re: Streaming Video of ISF Worlds at Saskatoon:

We have received numerous notes of inquiry since then from fans from all over the world asking for more details. I am sorry but I am as much in the dark here as everyone else. The host site still has no information on its subject link:

http://www.2009worldsmensfastpitch.com/Webcam.phpg

So all I can recommend is you keep watching that site and/or contact the host committee.

Excellent questions posed to us include:

– who are the announcers, play by play and colour commentators – do they know senior men’s ball?
– What video and audio quality will we have?
– What is the schedule for the games to be covered?
– will other games have at least a video image?

Hopefully we will have more information very soon as the countdown is on, we play ball in 3 more days!

The official site is:
http://www.2009worldsmensfastpitch.com<

[…]

I am counting on the host committee to provide me with our standard Game Summary Sheets right after every game so that we can keep the information flowing on all the action. I have been assured a reserved spot in the press box and a wireless connection so we should be good to go on Friday morning.

Safe travels to all the fans, players, umpires, and officials headed to Saskatoon, see you in the park on Friday morning.

Stay tuned to www.alsfastball.com

WFI Game 6 – Kitchner Top The Farm, 2-0 at Monkton

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

The reigning ISC World champions, the Kitchener Rivershark Twins top the 2007 ISC World champs, The Farm Tavern, of Madison, Wisconsin, 7-5 in Friday’s nightcap, a see-saw battle that came right down to the wire, and treated fans at Monkton to the most exciting game yet at the 2009 World Fastball Invitational.

Kitchener continued to show they are the team to beat, following up last year’s ISC World Title with a Legends Tournament title, and is now 2-0 at the prestigious Monkton tournament. They jumped out to an early lead against the Farm, touching up former teammate Frank Cox for three in the first. The Farm charged back with three of their own to tie the game, then a single run an inning later to take a 4-3 lead. Kitchener dug in, and scored two more to re-take the lead, only to have the Farm tie the game at 5. Despite the cool weather and late hour, the local fans stayed put to see the exciting finish, with Kitchener’s Craig Crawford blasting a two run homer to right field for the final margin of victory. Todd Martin picked up the win, in relief, with Cox suffering the loss. Dean Holoien started the game, notching strikeout after strikeout with a hard drop, and a blazing rise ball that at times, looked unhittable. Donnie Scott relieved Holoien , giving Kitchener another hard thrower to follow Holoien. Martin finished things off, giving fans a look at three-quarters of the vaunted Kitchener pitching staff, with only newcomer Grant Patterson not seeing action.

Play resumes at Monkton at 8:00 a.m. and continues into the evening. Ballparkradio.com will carry four games live on the internet at www.ballparkradio.com at 12, 2, 6 and 8pm.

Farewell for softball champ

Monday, June 29th, 2009

SAFE TRAVELS: Among those bidding Marty Grant, back row, middle, farewell were, back row, councillor Aldo Miccio and Jack Fletcher and front, from left Lewis Miccio, Grant’s son Cooper and Hugo Fletcher

Around 30 friends and supporters bid Nelson’s Marty Grant an emotional farewell on Sunday as the veteran Black Sox pitcher left for his fifth world championship softball campaign in Canada.

With three world crowns already under his belt, the 42-year-old Grant is chasing title No 4 in Saskatoon starting on July 17.

An official sendoff from councillor Aldo Miccio, representing Mayor Kerry Marshall, and a rousing Haka Tika Tonu performed by the Nelson kapa haka group Whatukura were part of the brief farewell ceremony at Nelson Airport.

Grant thanked his supporters and training partners Derryn French, Sam Miller, Simon Ashby and Jack Fletcher, and his friends who in a surprise gesture last week presented Grant’s wife Abbie and son Cooper with air tickets to travel to Canada for the championships. Abbie is recovering from successful breast cancer surgery.

Grant’s progress can be followed on his Twitter page or via the international softball federation website link for the champs, which will provide coverage of games and Ballpark Radio.

Editor’s note: “Bon Voyage” might be a more suitable headline; “Farewell” sounds like retirement and Marty is very much on the active player list, earning All World honors at last year’s ISC World Tournament at age 42. The last line of the story is not quite accurate — we’ll be broadcasting the Black Sox games on Ballparkradio at the World Fastball Invitational at Monkton this coming week/end, July 2-5, 2009, but not the ISF Championships which start July 17, 2009. Ballparkradio did submit a proposal to broacast the 2009 ISF World Championships in Saskatoon, but was not selected to do the broadcasting.

ISC Reorganizes Streaming Operations

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Press Release
ISC (International Softball Congress)
Tuesday, June 23, 2009

By unanimous vote of the ISC Executive Committee, our ISC Streaming operations for both ISC World tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions, are being reorganized effective with our 2009 tournaments.

The significant changes include:

.. Central management of both areas of Streaming (World Tournament and ISC II).

.. Dave Blackburn becomes Executive Producer and becomes responsible for all technical aspects of Streaming

.. Jim Flanagan and Blair Setford become co-Program Directors and have responsibility for the announcers, color commentators, scheduling games for Streaming and co-responsibility with Dave Blackburn for generating sufficient revenue from all Streaming operations to make them financially self-sufficient.

.. Utilizing a pool of both play by play and color broadcasters who can and will rotate between World Tournament and ISC II games eliminating the consecutive games current broadcasters have had to do.

.. Jim Flanagan, Blair Setford, Kyle Smith and Lance Winn become the pool of play by play broadcasters. Color commentators will be selected by co-Program Directors Jim Flanagan and Blair Setford and will come from an
experienced group of managers, coaches and players in both WT and II based on their availability during the tournaments.

It is felt these changes will provide our viewers and listeners with a more professional operation and at the same time, use the central management to generate the revenue necessary to make all Streaming self sustaining.
