Sr. Canadians Fastpitch championship round robin finals today

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The marathon has now become a sprint as the 10-team Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship heads into today’s final day of round-robin action at the Central Field complex in Charlottetown.

The defending champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins of Ontario have clinched a top-four finish and a double life in the playoffs, which open Friday. Kitchener improved to 7-0 with wins of 8-0 in five innings over the Glace Bay Mets of Nova Scotia, and 2-1 in eight innings over Blackburn Transport of Halifax.

Newfoundland and Labrador entries Three Cheers Pub (6-1) and West Side Charlies (5-2) have clinched playoff berths, as have the host Gahan House Bud Light Fawcetts (6-2) and Owen Sound Selects of Ontario (4-3). Three of those clubs will round out the top four. No team has been eliminated from the playoff picture.

Saskatchewan’s Ethier pitching for host Fawcetts

[Charlottetown, PEI] – There’s one obvious thing that stands out when looking at the schedule for the 2010 Canadian senior men’s fast pitch championship underway in Charlottetown.
That being a lack of teams entered in the tournament from west of Ontario.

But that doesn’t mean provinces like British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are not being represented.

“All players from the current Canadian national team are here,” said Trent Birt, chair of the tournament’s host committee.

“We certainly have (western Canadian talent) dispersed among eastern teams for sure.”
The lack of teams west of Ontario is mainly due to the costs involved in sending teams to the Island.

The Gahan House Bud Lights Fawcetts are 1-1 after the opening day of the 10-team Canadian senior men’s fast pitch championship at the Central fields in Charlottetown.

The Fawcetts rode some timely hitting to a 5-1 decision over the Glace Bay Mets of Nova Scotia in the opener, but were beaten 10-3 in five innings by the defending champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins of Ontario in the marquee game of the evening in front of an estimated 1,800 fans.

Fawcetts coach Doug Hines had already forgotten about the setback to Kitchener while his troops were packing up after the loss.

“It’s a long week and you have to have a short memory,’’ Hines said. “We’ve got to come back (today) and get two wins.

“It’s a nine-game round-robin and not too many teams are going to come in and dominate from Game 1 to Game 9.’’

The hosts take on the Owen Sound Selects of Ontario today at 1 p.m., then square off with the Fredericton Coors Light Twins at 6:30 p.m.

Fastpitch tourney underway in Charlottetown

Monday, August 30th, 2010

From CBC News:

The Senior Men’s National Fastpitch Championships kicked off Sunday in Charlottetown.

Ten teams from Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Quebec are here for the week-long tournament.

That translates to about 500 people in the city, said Wayne Long, the city’s events coordinator.

“This is an event that brings with it a good group of people with disposable income for a good length of stay,” said Long, adding that the economic impact could reach up to $500,000.

The city paid $15,000 to bring the tournament here.

The event is happening every day this week at the Central Field Complex located at Burns Avenue and North River Road.

The tournament wraps up with the championship game next Sunday.
