So Cal Bombers Win Copa Dum at Mexicali

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Updated Report

This is an update of an earlier report, with more details on the Bomber’s win in Mexicali.

As promised, we are providing all of the information provided to us from the Mexicali tournament.

“The So Cal Bombers won the Copa Dum tournament in Mexicali last weekend, September 29-30, 2007.”

The Bombers knocked off the Tijuana team that had a pitching staff of Jeremy Manley and Sebastian Gervasutti, then beat the hometown team from Mexicali, Fruteria Santa Cecilia, 6-4, coming from behind to do so, on Charlie Pena’s two run single in the fifth.

Update, October 8, 2007:

The So Cal Bombers beat Mexicali in the final 6-4. Mexicali scored 4 runs in the first inning off of Rob Schweyer including back to back HR’s to start the game. Schweyer went one more inning after the 1st and then Whitten threw the last 5 striking out 14 of the 15 outs. Raymundo Parra hit a solo HR in the 3rd to get the scoring started. The Bombers scratched one across in the 4th and then got 4 in the 6th to take the lead. Charlie Pena had a 2 out 2 rbi single to give the Bombers the lead. That was all Whitten needed. Panfilo Valdez started for them and pitched into the sixth when the Bombers scoring outburst occurred. There was a very good crowd in attendance — one that left no doubt as to who they were rooting for — hometown Mexicali. The Bombers finished the tournament with a 4-0-1 record. The tie was with Raymar, 11-11 on Sunday morning, in a game played after the Bombers captured the # 1 seed and that did not have playoff implications.
Game 1: Bomber 9, Ensendada 1;
Game 2: Bombers 8, Tijuana 2;
Game 3: Raymar 11, Bombers 11, tie;
Game 4 (semi-final): Bombers 9, Mexico City 0.

Roman Foore (Minnesota) played for the Bombers and led the team with 4 home runs.

Most Valuable Player was Sean Whitten;
Most Valuable pitcher was Panfilo Valdez
Batting Champion was Jason Porto

Whitten threw 18 innings struck out 44 and only gave up 4 hits. Schweyer threw a no hitter against Ensenada on Saturday.

So Cal Bombers Head to Mexicali for Copa Dum

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Designated Hitter par excellence Charlie Pena will be with the So Cal Bombers this weekend in Mexicali, Mexico for the COPA DUM tournament. Charlie is shown above as a member of the Baytown Hawks, picking up the hardware at this year’s Latin tournament in Texas where he was named Most Valuable Player.

Reports have it that Rob Schweyer (currently on the cover of fastpitchwest.com) will pitch for the Bombers, along with Sean Whitten, while Sebastian Gervasutti and Jeremy Manley will land in San Diego today and head south east to Mexicali to suit up for a rival team. Sonny Perkins is also reported to be headed to the tournament, though no word yet on who he will be pitching/playing for. A tournament slated for the Dominican Republic was pushed back to a later date, to enable players to attend both events.

We hope to receive reports on this one and will update readers as information becomes available.

Mexicali, Mexico, is just across the US border from Calexico, about 2 hours east and a bit south of San Diego, as shown in the map below. (The Team USA Olympic Training Facility West is located in Chula Vista, just south of San Diego and also shown on map)

Maddy’s Slideshow – 2007 NAFA Masters West at Carson City, Nevada

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Below is Maddy’s slideshow of the 2007 NAFA Masters West tournament, for all four divisions, 35+, 40+, 45+ and 50+., at Carson City, Nevada.

The fellow in pic 2 is the ageless Mike Trotter, who wore uniform number 68 — his age — while pitching for Northwest Old Growth in the 50+ division. Mike threw well, again, and is an inspiration to all of us who dream of playing for many more years. Not long ago, the radar gun said big Mike was throwing faster than his age. May we all age so gracefully.

If it seems like there are a lot of pics of those “Deadwood guys”, you’re probably right. Pic 3 is Deadwood player-manager Steve Miner getting the third place trophy from Benjie with some other guy hanging around. We even slippped a photo of Maddy into the mix, can you spot it?

The western looking town in some of the photos is Virginia City, just down the road from Carson City, Nevada, which is just down the road from Reno. It was my first time to Carson City, but I thought it made a great venue. Easy to get to (Reno airport 20-30 minutes away), with major highways leading right into town. Plenty of restaurants and hotels right near the field, not to mention casinos for those inclined, and a picturesque setting at the ballpark, a mere 10 minutes from the hotels. Hard to beat. (Also the best beer stand of 2007, with microbrews and others $2-$3 for a giant cup.)

Remember that you can control the speed of the slideshow, by mousing over the pics. The speed control is at the upper right. Just move that little slider if you want to speed them up. If you want to “hide” the little thumbnails, just move your cursor off of the slideshow. Yes, the thumbnails are really small, due to the number of photos, more than 300.

If for any reason you get a “no photos found” message, just click refresh on your browser.
