Z, Manley Toss Gems as # 1 Broken Bow Escapes with 1-0 Victory

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

It was only fitting — Opening night of the 2007 ISC World Tournament, playing to a packed house — star of the last two decades — Darren Zack vs. star of the present, Jeremy Manley. Horse Lake Thunder may have come in to the game unranked, against the # 1 team in the world, but Horse Lake had the Z-man, and Darren showed that he is still capable of beating the best in the world.

Zack and Manley traded zeroes for 5 2/3 innings, until Horse Lake error in the bottom of the 6th proved costly, turning a Rhys Casley base hit into a 1-0 victory for Broken Bow, who escaped with their seeding and ranking intact, but knowing how close they came to falling into the loser’s bracket. The large crowd stayed past midnight. As they filed out, they surely talked about the gem they had witnessed. Jeremy Manley looked unhittable at times, his rise ball exploding up, and his change up better than ever, striking out 18. But on this night, many in the crowd rooted for the upset, they rooted for the living legend, and rooted for Z.

Portland Wins Opener 1-0

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Portland DeMarini notched a win in their ISC World Opener, 1-0, on a Todd Garcia RBI in the first inning. Portland will now take on The Farm, who drew a first round bye. The lone run came when Brian Ree struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball, scoring on Garcia’s two out RBI single. Portland pitcher Bricklen Anderson pitched 6 shutout innings, surrendering but 3 hits while striking out 10, getting relief help from Mike Piechnik in the 7th, while Dolan & Murphy’s Juan Potlicchio was the hard luck losers, yielding only 4 hits and striking out 11.

LeClair mows down 14 as Quebec moves on; East Hants eliminated

BY PAT HEALEY
MEDIA OFFICER

SUMMERSIDE – Quebec pitcher Francis LeClair had the East Hants Henchmen batters mesmerized Saturday morning in the first placement game, mowing down The game featured just three hits between the two teams and a total of 23 strikeouts- 14 by LeClair and saw the game’s only run score as a result of a Mathieu Benoit RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. “We’re hoping to do the same as last year,” LeClair said, noting Quebec won three times in 2006 on Saturday to make it to Sunday action.

“It’s a hard way to do it, but it’s the only way for us to get there.” East Hants did have their chances, stranding seven bases runners – including leaving the bases juiced in top of the fourth- compared to Quebec, who had just three runners left on base. David LeClair had the other Quebec hit. Aaron Harvey had the Henchmen’s lone hit. Cory Avery went the distance in suffering the loss in the pitcher’s duel, walking two and striking out nine. Quebec will now face Elmira Advance Millwright at 1 pm in the playoff round.. Both teams need to win to continue playing on.

Around the Horn: Tough test awaits Explorers at ISC World Tournament
By Greg Chalfin

The final tournament of the fastpitch softball season awaits the No. 13 Midland Explorers in this weekend’s ISC World Tournament held in Kitchener, Ont.

Another tough draw awaits them too.

As at last weekend’s ASA Men’s Major Fastpitch tournament, the Explorers find a potential second-round matchup with the No. 3 Orillia Quaker Riversharks a distinct possibility.

At the ASA tournament, Orillia defeated Midland 3-0 in the second round and held the Explorers to just three hits.

“It really doesn’t matter because you have to play everybody to win (the tournament),” Explorers’ manager Clint Beane said. “We played them really well (last) Thursday night. Hopefully, we hit a little better.”

Midland responded at the ASA tournament with six consecutive wins through the losers’ bracket before finally falling to No. 8 Circle Tap. But as much success as they had facing elimination, Beane said it would be “a big lift” to get past Orillia in the second round.

“We played really well against those top teams,” Beane said. “We just haven’t broken through.”

Midland will have to find a way to beat top teams this weekend if it’s going to have success. Each of the 12 teams ranked ahead of them are in the 30- team field.

Beane added that the ISC’s prestige comes from the level of competition combined with the tournament’s atmosphere.

“The fan base is unreal as far as the ISC goes,” Beane said.

The Explorers had their worst finish since 1989 at last year’s ISC World Tournament, finishing 22nd, but Beane expects the team to respond to last year’s disappointing finish.

“The bounce back is to win that second game,” Beane said. “You’ve got to kind of stay in that winners’ bracket.”

Midland opens against unranked Napanee at 1 p.m. Saturday. The tournament continues through Aug. 18.
