The damage got done in the third after a pair of walks first to Felix Squires then shortstop Justin Gill (1-4) followed with a single. Stephen Strapp (0-2) was then walked to load the bases bringing NL slugger Jon Kane to the plate.Kane (1-2) made no mistake tagging NB pitcher Jeremy Regan for a long home run that went about 300 feet, scoring all four runs. The onslaught continued when third basemen Shane O’Brien (0-1, walk) was hit by a pitch and then Matt Hill (0-1) was walked. Ken Gosse (1-3, ) sent the first offering from relief pitcher Brandon Gorman out of the park to make it 8-0.
NL pinch hitter Mark Lewis would be walked in the fourth and later score on an error by Vic center-fielder Matt Houcy for the defending champions final run of the game. New Brunswick got their first two runs of the tournament, scoring one each in the fourth and fifth innings. The Vics had nine hits off NL starter Wayne Bruce while NL had just six hits.

“Covers Prince Edward Island Like the Dew”
Working hard for fun
Tournament director Paul Gallant says there are many small details that need to be covered when putting on an event like the Canadian junior men’s fastpitch championship, which begins this Sunday in Summerside
AMBER SHEA
Transcontinental MediaSUMMERSIDE — The first tournament Paul Gallant ever organized was the national junior men’s fastpitch softball championship in 1983.
“Twenty-four years later and here we are again,†said Gallant, the tournament director.
Sunday at 11 a.m., the Causeway Bay national junior men’s fastpitch championship begins in Summerside.
“It lasts eight days,†said Gallant. “We’re hoping to get about 20,000 people going through the park during the tournament.â€
There are nine teams entered in the tournament, including the host Summerside Source For Sports Twins.
There are no enteries from Manitoba, Alberta or British Columbia, but there is one each from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Saskatchewan. There are three teams representing Ontario.
Gallant said families travelling with ball players tend to make a vacation out of these tournaments.
“There will be a visitor information booth set up at the ball field for people who want to know things like where to go sailing.â€
Summerside was awarded the tournament late in 2005, beating out two other communities.
Since then, Gallant has been getting ready for the event.
“I could be on the phone with you for hours describing the minor details that go on behind the scenes in order to organize a ball tournament.â€
Organizing volunteers, making sure the ball field meets softball Canada standards, getting sponsors, setting up travel times and putting together opening and closing ceremonies are only some of the things he needs to do to prepare for the tournament.
Gallant is also talking with the teams every day to make sure they are informed about things like transportation schedules.
So far, everything is going smoothly, but Gallant said there are always minor issues they have to deal with when the tournament starts.
“I don’t drink . . . but I usually have a beer at the end of each tournament to celebrate that it’s over,†he said with a laugh.
“I do this because I love it.â€

ASA Major – Day 2 Preview
Friday, August 3rd, 2007ASA Major Winner’s Bracket Down to Elite Eight

After an opening round of games yesterday, the ASA Major winner’s bracket is down to eight unbeaten teams, and provides the following matchups today:
Florida Fastpitch vs. Broken Bow, 1pm EST
Quad City Sox vs. Patsy’s, 3pm EST
Midwest Stampede vs. Riversharks, 3pm EST
Minn Dak Millers vs. Circle Tap, 3pm, ESQ
The top opening night matchup was The Farm vs. Broken Bow, with the Gremlins coming out on top. That sends an awfully good team to the loser’s bracket early, no picnic for teams in their path. Dolan and Murphy & Planggers play for the privilege in a “loser’s bracket play(back) in” game today.
In the winner’s bracket, Bow, Patsy’s and the Riversharks (ISC World # 1, # 2 and # 3 ranked teams) would have to be considered favorites in their games today, with the MinnDak v. Circle Tap (ISC World # 7 and # 8.) figuring to be the closest contest of the afternoon. But of course, teams have been proving the rankers wrong all year, so we’ll let these games play out on the field. Florida Fastpitch always seems to do well in the Major, with a couple of runner-up finishes the past couple years, but faces ISC # 1 Broken Bow in their second game of the tournament.
In the Loser’s Bracket, (ISC # 13) Midland starts the long road back, winning it’s “play in” game against Dolan and Murphys before falling 3-0 in a close contest against the Riversharks. From their standpoint, at least they are at the opposite end of the bracket from ISC # 6 The Farm. The loser’s bracket alternates teams from the winner’s and loser’s bracket, meaning that advancing losers won’t see a team from the winner’s bracket until their third and fifth games.
First day surprises? The Midwest Stampede came in as the ISC #26 ranked team, and knocked off # 17 Bloomington Stix, inspiring a Butch Cassidy-Sundance Kid-like commentary from fans about the Stampede, “Who ARE those guys?”. Stampede pitcher Kim Hansen may not be a household name (yet), but he tossed a two hit shutout, striking out 12 against a solid Bloomington Stix team.
Duncan Outlaws and Rice Creek Michigan are both playing up in class, and will face each other in the loser’s bracket after opening night losses, with the winner facing the Circle Tap-Minn Dak loser.
Click here for the updated bracket at Al’s Fastball
Friday morning update: While we were posting this, the 9am games finished up, with Midland topping Ashland while Dolan and Murphy beat Planggers. That means Planggers drops to 0-2 and will have to get past Midland to avoid going 0-3 and being the first team of the tournament to be eliminated. In some odd bracketing, if Planggers had beaten Dolan, Midland and Dolan would have faced each other twice in their first three games. Dolan’s victory this morning will put them in the path of the freight train called “The Farm”, right now.
