Mass. team gets court’s OK for Neb. tourney

Katman Sports, MA permitted to play in 2009 ASA “C” Western despite mandatory reclassification

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) – A Massachusetts team had to go to court for approval to play in a national softball tournament this weekend in Hastings.

The Katman Sports team traveled from Fairhaven, Mass., at a cost of $10,000 to participate in the Class C men’s fast-pitch tournament.

But when the players arrived in Hastings this week, the American Softball Association ruled them ineligible. The association said the team finished too high in the tournament last year and should be playing in Class B.

So, the team went to Adams County Court, saying they were already given the OK to play. A judge agreed and ordered the association to allow Katman to compete.

Editor’s Notes: Katman played in the loser’s bracket finals of the 2008 ASA “C” National in Prescott last year, finishing in THIRD PLACE place.

The 2009 ASA Code says:

Article 507 F 01 Mandatory Classification.

01. Mandatory Reclassification. An adult team that has four or more players on a roster, including pick-up players, from a team or teams that finished in the following divisions and classifications in the same National Championship Final must participate in the next higher classification in championship play for their next ASA playing season unless they played in
the highest classification:

NOTE: If a team fails to participate in Championship play the next calendar year this restriction will remain in effect until the team participates at the higher classification.

EXCEPTION: In all Adult national Championships, the top finishing 10% ( plus ties ) will be reclassified to the next higher classification. Fractions will be rounded up to the nearest whole number. Comments: To establish consistency in the number of teams moved up.

The 2008 ASA “C” National had 49 teams, meaning that the top 5 finishers are subject to the mandatory reclassification rule – including Katman Sports.

Place M/R Team Name Hometown Record
1st M LANDIS SUPERMARKET Telford, PA 7-0
2nd M SANTA ROSA Santa Rosa, CA 8-2
3rd M KATMAN SPORTS East Wareham, MA 5-2
4th M MANOR DIRTBAGS Manor, TX 6-2
5th M G2 Willcox, AZ 4-2
5th M PIPER LAKE Shawnee, KS 3-2

Query: Why does the rule not apply to Katman Sports ?

In 2009, after the court hearing permitted them to play in Class “C” Katman lost their first game of the tournament. The bracket shows them winning their next game, in the loser’s bracket, but with their opponent advancing instead of them, so perhaps there is a bit more to the story to be told.
