Cal State Builders Head to Boatnik in Oregon

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

The Cal State Builders will be headed to the Boatnik Tournament in Grant’s Pass, Oregon over the Memorial Holiday weekend. Started in 1959, the Boatnik includes boat racing, fastpitch tournament and other community events, and will be celebrating their 50th year !

If your first question was “Who are the Cal State Builders?”, I’m right with you. The answer is that they are team organized for this one tournament. The next question many will ask (Fastpitchwest Forum readers in particular) will be: “Are Ron Rupp and Gerald Pyle really going to be in the same dugout, playing for the same team?”. The answer is “yes”. No wait – it gets better — they will be riding up to the tournament in the same van for the 10 hour drive ! That might redefine the term “Rupp’s Worst Nightmare ©” Oh, I can hear them going at it already. I give them until just north of Bakersfield before one of them winds up hitch hiking the rest of the way 😉

Best of the West – Santa Barbara, CA – May 30-31

Monday, May 18th, 2009

We’ll be posting more info shortly on the upcoming Best of the West Tournament in Santa Barbara, May 30-31, 2009, including the schedule of games. In the meantime, a few “notes on my scorecard”:

Tournament director David Blackburn told me yesterday, that he has sixteen (16) teams lined up for the tournament (May 30-31) in Santa Barbara, the largest field of team ever in the tournament’s longstanding 18 year history.

Among the teams headed to the beautiful coastal city in 2009 are the Pueblo Bandits and Innovative Communications (the 2007 BoW champs). Last year saw a couple of classic pitching match-ups between Lucas Mata (So Cal Bombers) and Sebastian Gervusutti (Team Rainey). Mata and the Bombers won the Saturday round robin game, while Sebastian and Team Rainey came away with the win on Sunday in the playoff round, and went on to capture the 2008 title.

The tournament was started in 1991 by Long Beach Painter’s GM Allan Ruegsegger, and held that first year as the “Best of the West Shootout” at Joe Rodgers field in Long Beach. That one featured the two Salt Lake City powerhouses of the day, Larry Miller Toyota, with Peter Meredith, and Page Brake, with Neil Chadwick, the Guanella Brothers, the Painters and Vista Bombers. (held so long ago, that I played in it).

The image above is from an old T-shirt from the 2nd Best of the West in 1992.

Since then, the tournament has made the rounds, being held in places like Soboba, Winchester, but seems to have settled into a home in Santa Barbara the past few years. David Blackburn has been the tournament director for most of the tournament’s history and now getting a big assist from the tournament’s Santa Barbara host, Clyde Bennnett. The tournament has been up and down in terms of the number of teams (down to a half dozen a few years ago), but the most reliable event on the So Cal schedule for nearly two decades, thanks to Dave’s hard work.

PRESS RELEASE

Hello fastball fans, players, and coaches/management alike!

It’s that time of year again!!!
The season in many parts of the continent has just got underway, and yes, here in Monkton we are starting final preparations to welcome the world to our prestigious annual event – the World Fastball Invitational. First and foremost, I would like to invite everyone to check out our recently updated (but not yet completed) website. www.monktonfastball.com Here you will find all the info you need regarding our event – schedule of events, teams, maps, contact info (tournament schedule to be released and posted soon!)

The off-season has not only brought many changes to teams and their accompanying rosters, but to our event as well. None more important than the announcement of our NEW TITLE sponsor – Steelback Brewery!!

Located (somewhat) nearby in the town of Tiverton ON and in the theme of keeping our suppliers/vendors/sponsors local, we are very proud to have this new affiliation. New ownership and management has brought the company to prominence recently by winning several awards for their product (BEER!) , and thus, we are delighted to have them on board for our event. Check their website: www.steelbackbrewery.com for more information, and where you can buy their products. I would like to take this opportunity to not only thank the folks at Steeback in advance, but ask for your support and assistance by thanking them as well via an email addressed to the President of Steelback Mr. Ian MacDonald – imacdonald@steelbackbrewery.com The more thanks and kind words we send the better it is, not only for our event, but for the support of softball in general. The game needs more people/sponsors like Steelback and I urge you to send thanks to Mr. MacDonald.

Also, we have formed a new alliance with the ownership of the 3 prominent hotels in nearby and beautiful Stratford ON – the Arden Park Inn www.ardenpark.on.ca , the Festival Inn www.festivalinnstratford.com , and The River Garden Inn , www.rivergardeninn.com If you plan on making the trip to Monkton this year, be sure to book a room at one of these fine hotels.

Our event is, and always will be founded on having the best teams in the World, and we are very pleased to once again assemble the finest roster of teams, who have assembled their clubs with players from all over the globe. AND, as an added bonus, we are delighted and proud to host the New Zealand National team, who will compete in the round-robin portion of the tournament only, but will play an exhibition game (slated for 3:00pm) following the final game which is scheduled for 1:00 on Sunday afternoon.

The other 7 teams playing in this year’s event are:

defending ISC World Champions Kitchener Rivershark Twins
ISC World runner-up Saskatoon Aspen Interiors;
The Farm;
Vancouver Grey Sox;
Midwest Stampede;
Jarvis First Ontario Gamblers,
and rounded out with a local – but very competitive All-Star team from the local South Perth league.

Competition gets under way once again on Thurs evening following our opening ceremonies at 7:15 pm, with a re-play of last years ISC championship game – Kitchener vs. Saskatoon!!! The 9:30 game will feature the New Zealand National team squaring off against first-time visitors to Monkton – Vancouver Grey Sox. The remainder of the schedule will be posted online at our website, and here on AlsFastball within the next few days.

Once again we welcome back our good friends at Easton and will once again be hosting the Easton Home Run Challenge on Fri night at 8:00. This event is a crowd favourite as we have seen some outstanding home-run performances in the past. Last years Champion Dale Levy will be back to defend his title, along with previous 2-time winner Travis Wilson!

As always, what event would be complete without some great entertainment off the field!! We again have an open-air karaoke night on Friday, along with a live performance from New Hollywood on Sat night in the arena, as well as the scrumptious (and now famous!) Sat beef-b-b-q, and the renowned Sunday morning Firefighters Brunch!

More information and details will be coming out on a regular basis here on Al’s as well as our website, so stay tuned and we look forward to seeing you all in Monkton!

Kitchener to Host 2011 ISC World Tournament and ISCII T of C

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Sunday, May 10, 2009

The International Softball Congress (ISC) is pleased to announce that Kitchener, ON will host the 2011 ISC World Tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions.

Normally, bidding for the 2011 tournaments would occur during the ISC Board of Director meeting in August in Quad Cities. However, we have talked to each prospective host city for 2011 and all have withdrawn except Kitchener. It was therefore decided we would award the 2011 tournaments early, to allow Kitchener maximum time to plan and prepare.

Peter Hallman Ballyard

Kitchener has successfully hosted 3-prior ISC World and ISC II tournaments in 2002, 2006 & 2007 and we have every confidence their 2011 tournaments will be equally successful.

It is expected that Duncan Matheson will again serve as tournament director for the World Tournament and Rick Boyd as tournament director for the ISC II Tournament of Champions.

The contract with Kitchener will be signed later this summer after the Midland contract for 2010 is signed.
