NPSA Fast Pitch Championships Begin Tonight

(click banner for original news story)

[BAHAMAS] – The semi final round of the playoffs in the New Providence Softball Association resulted in some very good play all around and now the best two men and women’s teams will play for the ultimate league title.

Tuesday night the last semi-final series came to an end when the New Breed beat the Kings Real Estate Pros 9-3 in game four of their best-of-five series.

The victory advanced the New Breed to the championship series against their most hated rivals, D’ Truckers who are the defending champions.

After struggling during the final two weeks of the regular season, the New Breed found themselves in a battle for the meaningless second spot in the men’s division with the Pros, but on Tuesday they seemed to have regained their focus and easily did away with the Pro. Now the New Breed looks poised to dethrone the Truckers, which is much easier said than done. .

In game four on Tuesday the New Breed saw the Pros jump out to the early 3-1 lead after the first inning, but New Breed pitcher Leonard LaFrance got stingy and allowed just four hits the remainder of the game.

His offense gave him all the support he needed. They pulled to within one run after two innings then exploded for three runs in each of the fourth and fifth inning before adding another run in the top of the sixth.

New Breed batter Garfield Bethel was 3-for-4 off losing pitcher Cardinal Gilbert. He hit the only home run of the game. Marcellus Hall was 2-for-3 in the win.

The Truckers swept the Defense Force Commodores in the second half of the men’s semi-finals.

In the past few seasons, particularly when the New Breed was developing their team to beat the Truckers, the two sides have had a number of physical altercations that have intensified their rivalry. They will play in the feature game tonight at 8:30pm.

The action will begin with game one of the women’s championship series between the Proper care Pool Lady Sharks and the fourth seeded Sigma Brackettes starting at 7pm at the Baillou Hills Sports Complex.

Deadwood 2-0, Heads into Playoff Round Sunday

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The Editor’s team, Long Beach Deadwood won both of their pool play games Saturday, 7-4 and 9-6, with pitchers Dan Zupp and Billy Montana picking up the wins. Newcomer Doug Shaw (who plays for the So Cal Hustlers during the regular season) homered in his first plate appearance in the 50+ division, and homered again in the nightcap, to put the game away.

In the first game, Deadwood scored in the first on Shaw’s homer and never surrendered the lead against Hellman, Colorado. Zupp threw a shutout into the 5th inning, when a couple of unearned runs got Colorado on the board. Another newcomer, Mitch Mendenhall added a couple of key hits and played solid defense at third base.

In the nightcap, Deadwood’s catcher, Larry Giese started the offense rolling with a home run in the second, and Deadwood led 3-2 into the 5th inning. Northwest Old Growth, from Portland Oregon rallied back, scoring two in the top of the fifth on a two out, two run single by pitcher Dean. In the bottom half of the inning, Deadwood’s Dean Bettencourt got the squad even with a line drive double to right center field, and set off a four-run scoring outburst capped off by Doug Shaw’s home run. Portland did not go quietly though, scoring two more in the top of the seventh to trim the lead to 9-6, and had the tying run at the plate before the final out was recorded.

Deadwood will start the single elimination bracket this morning at 9:45am against Bay Area Merchants of Northern California, needing two wins to reach the final in the eight team division.

Scores from other age divisions to be posted at the NAFA website, www.nafafastpitch.com

Golden Year for the Golden State

Friday, September 5th, 2008

2008 was a banner year for men’s fastpitch teams from California:

Gold:

ISC II Champions – California Lumberkings.
ASA “A” Champions – Italian Athletic Club
NAFA 23-and-under champions – Santa Barbara Young Bucks

Silver:

ASA “B” – Team Pape
ASA “C” – Santa Rosa
NAFA “A” – Fat City

Not to mention a 6th place finish among 32 teams by the So Cal Bombers in the toughest division of them all, the ISC World Tournament. Did I miss anyone?

Masters are next, September 20-21, 2008 at Carson City. Who’s next to join the group above?

And while we’re plugging California’s finest, did I mention that Santa Barbara’s Mark Bennett tossed a perfect game against multiple-National champions New Image, Wisconsin in the ASA “A” Nationals?

ASA “A” Champions – Italian Athletic Club

Friday, September 5th, 2008

We congratulate the new ASA “A” champions from California, the Italian Athletic Club. Team members:

Ed Brooks
James Butler
Larry Machado
Marco Marciasini
Joel Manfredi
Tony Peeples
Steve Pinocchio
Jason Porto
Mark Summers
Josh Tisdale
Chase Turner
Peter Turner
Bryan Wells

Pitcher Tony Peeples was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, sharing All American honors with teammates Jason Porto (outfield) , Chase Turner (Utility), James Butler (Infield) and Steve Pinocchio (Infield)

The team has worked hard over the past four years, with a steady progression to the top, playing up to the next level, then the next, and finding their place atop the heap.

Italian Athletic Club’s last four seasons:

2005 25th C natonals
2006 2nd place B nationals
2007 3rd A nationals
2008 A NATIONAL CHAMPS

Perhaps some inspiration for two other California teams following similar paths — Santa Rosa finishing 2nd in the “C”, and Team Pape, 2nd in the “B”.

Poll on ASA’s Decision to Split “C” Nationals in Two

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Our blog post below, on the ASA’s decision to split the “C” National in two for 2009 — with half of the teams going to Hastings Nebraska and half going to Decatur has generated a bit of email, so we decided to post the poll below and see what our readers think.

Is the ASA’s Decision to Split the 2009 “C” National in Two a Good Idea?
Yes
No

Note that the poll gives you an opportunity to comment on the question — and give your reasons as to why you think it is or isn’t a good idea. Or why you think they made the decision. You can post your comment anonymously if you wish.

Update, September 2:

A knowledgeable reader points us to Sections 202-204 of the ASA Code, which defines the geographical regions, as to where the dividing line falls. (See below). So according to the ASA, Nebraska (host of next year’s Western Regional ASA “C” Half-National is in the “west”. (Explain that to sponsors buying plane tickets next September) If the theory of split nationals is to save on gas money, that sort of goes out the window for teams from the West, listed below, no? What is the meaningful difference between playing in Nebraska instead of Illinois? Negligible at best.

ASA Code Sections 202-204:

West = Texas, Minnesota, North & South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and Oklahoma.

East = those not listed above.

Using the State-by-State breakdown for 2008, here is where those teams would play in 2009:

West – 42 Teams to Hastings, Nebraska in 2009

California – 14
Arizona – 12
New Mexico – 7
Utah – 3
Colorado – 1
Idaho – 1
Nevada – 1
Oregon – 1
Kansas – 1
Texas – 1

East – 8 teams To Decatur, Illinois in 2009

Pennsylvania – 4
Alabama – 1
Georgia – 1
Massachusetts – 1
South Carolina – 1

Editor’s note: Actually, when you factor in the “bump up” rule, the East would lose two more teams (Landis, PA and Katman, MA), so the East would be down to 6 teams, at least using the list from this year’s teams.

Update, September 4:

273 votes cast, and I’ve yet to see anyone make a case for the split. One commenter noted the same:

From Ken on September 3, 2008 at 1:50 pm.
I would like to hear the reasons for the 30 or so yes answers that have been logged in. Even if they are anonymous. Just curious what good can come out of a split.

By the way, we have invited ASA to comment or explain the reason for the split. Nothing from them yet.

Santa Rosa Second in ASA “C” Nationals

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

PRESCOTT, AZ — It may have been Landis Markets of Pennslyvania 9, Santa Rosa Fastpitch 0 in the champoinship game of the 2008 Men’s Class C Fastpitch National Tournament, but the Santa Rosa team again established itself as the No. 1 Class C team in California and one of the best teams in the nation for the second year in a row.

After finishing fourth in the 2007 nationals in Killeen, TX, with a 6-2 record, Santa Rosa moved up to second with an 8-2 record, giving them 14 wins in 18 national tournament games in two seasons.

Landis Market dominated the field by winning seven games in impressive fashion, but in the championship game on Sunday, a battle-weary Santa Rosa team, which played five consecutive games on the final day, played the Pennslyvania team on even terms until the seventh inning, when pitcher Jeff Want, a first-team All-American, was roughed up for eight hits and eight runs to break open a 1-0 game.

Want was superb in the championship game, blanking Landis on five hits until the fifth inning when tournament MVP Justin Stock led off with a double to right-center. He moved to third when Brent Moyer grounded out and scored on a two-out single by Frank Keating.

Stock was virtually unstoppable throughout the tournament, batting a phenomenal .818 (18 of 22), which included three home runs, three triples and three doubles with 15 RBIs and 20 runs scored. In addition, he was hit by pitches three times and walked twice, pushing his on base percentage to .852.

It remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Landis erupted against Want for eight hits and eight runs.
