Long Beach Black Sox Capture Title at Lancaster

Click Here for our complete recap of the weekend.

Vranich Tosses Two-Hitter in Finale, while Hanker, Lopes and Otte Power Offense

In So Cal ASA Alliance play May 21-22, 2005 at Lancaster, California, the Long Beach Black Sox scored 38 runs in 4 games Sunday including 8 in the title game against Primetime., an 8-0 shutout for winning pitcher Chuck Vranich. Chuck Vranich surrendered just two hits to Primetime. Fred Hanker and John Otte drove in two runs each, while Damian Guerrero, Chris Minogue and Dan Fleming added one RBI each, as the Sox pounded out 10 hits. The momentum swung to Long Beach early, as Joe Nuanez was called out for leaving third on what otherwise would have been a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rick McCarthy, to end a Primetime scoring threat in the first.

Scoring Recap:

Black Sox Third
: Benny Guerrero got things started with a single to left; Chuck Chaple walked, followed by a single by Andy Martinez to load the bases. Fred Hanker singled to right field to bring home Guerrero and Chapel, sending Martinez to third. Damian Guerrero followed with a line drive RBI single to left, perhaps the hardest hit ball of the game, scoring Martinez, before a double play ended the inning. Three runs, four hits. (Score: 3-0 Black Sox)

Black Sox Fourth:Dale Lopes opened the inning with a triple to the left centerfield gap, a ball that went to the fence. John Otte hit a towering fly ball that carried over the right fielder’s head, scoring Lopes and Otte. Two runs on two hits; (Score 5-0 Black Sox)

Black Sox Fifth:Chuck Chapel opened the inning with a walk, and scored when a ball hit by Andy Martinez was thrown wide of first, Martinez advancing to second. Chris Minogue singled to left with two outs, scoring Martinez. Two runs on one hit, and one error. (Score 7-0 Black Sox)

Black Sox Sixth:John Otte reached on an infield error at first on the throw. Marcel Bernal singled to center, Otte stopping at second. With one out, Dan Fleming singled to center field, scoring Otte, and ending the game. One run on two hits and one error. Final Score, 8-0 Black Sox.

Primetime could not get untracked offensively, mustering only two hits in the game, a single by Jimmy Buentello in the first and a single by Brian Webb in the third. Meanwhile, the Sox defense was stellar, with Otte running down a long fly off the bat of Johnny Nuanez, five putouts by shortstop Andy Martinez, including a web-gem back hand play in the third, and a gem by third baseman Dan Fleming on a hard hit ball by Jimmy Buentello in the 6th. The breaks and bounces seemed to go Long Beach’s way. Even a line drive hit by Joe Nuanez in the sixth that richocheted off of Chuck Vranich took a Long Beach bounce to second baseman Chuck Chaple for a 1-4-3 putout. Vranich was not hurt on the play. Aside from a one-out walk to Joe Nuanez in the first and single by Buentello that put Nuanez on third, Primetime did not have another runner reach second base. (more…)

Papa’s Got a Brand New Blog

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

First, it was Fastpitchwest getting a companion site, Ballparkradio. Now, this Morning Brief blog has a companion, the all-new-ISC-II blog, “The Deuce”, with an easy to remember web address.

“The Deuce” is a blog providing Un-official coverage of the ISC II at Fastpitchwest.com. It is written by Fastpitchwest’s Jim Flanagan and ISC II commissioner Blair Setford, and designed to give ISC II teams, players and their fans a place to find the latest news and information on the ISC II.

Like the Morning Brief, The Deuce got its start using Google’s “Blogger” software, but now takes advantage of the same “WordPress” software that we use here. The new blog gives our readers access to the same features as you find here — a search engine to find any item, RSS syndication feeds, links to all of your favorite sites, the ability to print any single item to a page, posts organized by categories. The new blog “The Deuce” is also interactive, permitting you to post your own comments to any item posted on the blog. You’ll also see links to ISC II teams, and to the latest rankings promulgated by the ISC II.

The ISC II is the newest classification of competition for men’s fastball, with the first ISC II tournament held in 2002, for teams just below the “ISC World” open classification. For details on eligibility, click the “eligibility” link under Official ISC II links below. The annual tournament hosts 40 top men’s fastball teams, held at the same location as the ISC World Tournament. Following a “name the tournament” contest in 2003, the annual ISC II tournament was named the “ISC II Tournament of Champions”.

The 2005 ISC II Tournament of Champions, August 14-19, 2005 will be the fourth annual, held this year in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, just down the road from the ISC World Tournament in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

We hope you enjoy “The Deuce” and make it a regular stop to catch up on, and keep up with the ISC II.

Around Town, May 18

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

There’s been plenty of talk about Team Rainey’s new pitching staff for 2005 of Bricklin Anderson, Sonny Perkins and Tony Hunhoff. Little known to many people, though, one of their position players, Jesse Duncan is a fine pitcher in his own right. In seasons past, Duncan pitched for Team Rainey at the Portland Rose Cup tournament, picking up wins against open level competition. Earlier this year, he pitched the Panteras to an Alliance weekend tournament title, including a championship game win over the current league leaders, Primetime Fastpitch. Last night in the Artesia city league, the Black Sox were his latest victim. Duncan fanned 16 in 6 innings, including 11 in a row at one stretch. Andy Martinez had a single and Robert Renteria two hits for the only Black Sox offense in the game, won by Duncan’s Raider team, 3-1. As dominant as Duncan was, the game was actually on the line in the last inning, when a dropped third strike and Renteria double put the tying runs at second and third with two outs. But Duncan then registered his 16th strikeout of the night to put down the rally.

Meanwhile, off in the distance, on the other field at Artesia Park, was another Team Rainey position player working in the pitcher’s circle, the team’s namesake, Rod Rainey, pitching his second game in as many weeks. Hey, how ’bout leaving something for us guys that can’t hit 🙂

Facelift for “Morning Brief”

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

In a word, “olive”. The Morning Brief has received a facelift, thanks to the efforts of Lukas Kamps, who runs a fastball site of his own, Tri-County Fastball. Lukas is a 26 year old computer whiz from Ottawa, Canada, who took the time to hack the Word Press blogging software to give our Morning Brief the familiar Fastpitchwest black and olive color scheme. Thanks, Lukas!

Feel free to click that comment link at the end of this post, and let us know what you think about the change.

Linus Software Stealers Blogging Game Results

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

We are pleased to share some news from up north, British Columbia, from “roving reporter” Darren Strang, pitcher for the Linus Software Stealers. For those who might not have visited the Stealer’s team website, IMHO, it’s one of the best fastball team sites on the ‘net. And now they’ve added a blog to go with it, to keep fastball fans abreast of their latest game results. Here’s a sample of the most recent post at the blog — click the “Read the rest…” link at the end to read the whole thing.

It’s Miller Time!
The Linus Software Stealers traveled to Connaught Park on Tuesday to face the Meralomas. The weather threatened to shut this one down but the skies were clear at game time. The Lomas sent the young gun from the Maritimes Jon Kane to the mound. The Stealers countered with Darren Strang. Again the Stealer bats were hot, Corey Manns drew a lead off walk and was moved around by a Mark Dunlop single. A collection of hits and errors plated Dunlop and Manns for a 2 – 0 Stealers lead. That lead was later increased in the first inning when Paul Arthur reached on a single and was driven home by a Doug Miller homerun. Miller just back after missing the first few games of the season didn’t stop there as he finished the night going 3 – 4 with 3 HR’s and 5 RBI. Darren Strang got the win as the Stealers finished up with a 9 – 2 win. That win takes the Stealers premier record to 3 – 2 – 0 and overall record to 5 – 5 – 2. The next action for the Stealers will be Thursday when they take on the Giants from South Hill at Steveston Park at 7:30. [Read the rest of the entry at the Stealers’ blog…]

(Editor’s note: There are a number of sites offering free blogs, like the one that the Stealers are using. Readers may recognize the format of the Stealer blog as google’s, which we used for this Morning Brief before we installed WordPress software which now runs the Morning Brief. No matter the software, blogs are a great tool for getting your team up on the web, especially for those who don’t have the time or inclination to do an entire site. And as you can see from the Stealer’s blog, they also make a great adjunct to the main site. Click the “Blogger” icon on the Stealer’s blog for more information if you’re interested in creating your own. And if you do set one up, be sure to drop us a line so we can link you up.)
