Of Fathers and Life

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

In honor of Father’s Day, we share a piece from today’s LA Times, an interview with a favorite of ours, Vin Scully.

Scully’s Stepdad Was Simply ‘Dad’ – Los Angeles Times
Scully’s Stepdad Was Simply ‘Dad’
Dodgers broadcaster ached to know his real father, but that was soothed by his stepdad.

Dad was working late as usual, finishing up a 14-hour shift at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Vin Scully had finished his homework and was getting sleepy. Although something was on his mind, he couldn’t wait up, so he wrote a note and put it on his dad’s breakfast plate before going to bed.

It was 1943 and Vin was 15. His stepfather, Allan Reeve, left for work each morning at 4:30, riding buses and subways to the shipyard, often not returning home until after nightfall.

Reeve had an opportunity to take a civilian job on a ship headed to the combat zone in Europe. The money would be good, maybe even enough to get the family out of its $40-a-month, fifth-story walk-up apartment in Washington Heights.

Vin had only a hazy memory of his biological father dying of pneumonia 11 years earlier, but he knew the toll it had taken on his mother, Bridget. The thought of losing Reeve, a reserved, pipe-smoking Englishman who had brought stability and love to the household, terrified him.

So in the note, Vin asked his dad to turn down the job.

“I was afraid he might be put in harm’s way,” Vin said. “I didn’t want him to risk the family to make a few more dollars.”

Vin Scully’s verbal artistry as the Dodgers’ broadcaster has been described as silky. Coincidentally, his father, Vincent Aloysius Scully, was a silk salesman at an upscale clothing store.

Vin remembers his father only from a few grainy photos. After he died, Bridget took 4-year-old Vin to Ireland to spend time with her family.

“My mother told me later that when we came back, I had a brogue you could cut with a knife,” he said.

Money was tight, and his mother rented out two spare bedrooms, usually to merchant sailors. One, Reeve, was a British seaman who worked for the Cunard Lines and bore a resemblance to actor Ralph Bellamy.

Reeve and Bridget eventually married and had a daughter, Margaret Anne. The family moved to Manhattan and Reeve found work as a doorman at an apartment building on Central Park West. He brought home hand-me-down clothes for Vin from residents he got to know.

“He’d spent his life at sea, now he was going to live on land and it was difficult for him,” Scully said. “We were poor but not poverty-stricken. He was wonderful, in a quiet, shy way. And in watching him work, I developed tremendous admiration for him.”

These days, of course, Vin, 78, is called Dad and Granddad. He had three children with his first wife, Joan, who died early in 1972, and another with his current wife, Sandra, who also brought two children to their marriage late in 1973.

“I hope they look upon me as Dad,” he said of his stepchildren. “The thing that helped with our Brady Bunch, as we call them, is my wife. She is a tower of strength.

“I’d say to her, ‘You deserve a medal.’ ”

So one day Vin went to a jeweler and had a medal engraved, wrapped it with a ribbon and presented it to Sandra as a token of his appreciation for her being there on so many summer days and nights when he was serving as voice of the Dodgers.

Today, Scully is in Oakland with the Dodgers, doing the job he has done so masterfully for 57 years, and doing it with a measure of regret.

“My ache now is all the things I missed because of my job,” he said. “Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, you name it.

“It has been a series of misses. And it has made my heart ache. Baseball just devours you.”

Allan Reeve read Vin’s note at breakfast and did not take the job that would have sent him overseas.

His relationship with his stepson continued to grow over the years.

“To me, he was Dad,” Vin said. “I never thought of him as a stepdad. I had an ache because I never knew my father, and it was washed away by my dad

Sledgehammer’s Latest California Top 10

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Sledge is swinging the ratings hammer again. Here’s the latest:

“I’ve had a few weeks to gather some more info on teams and have a new California Top Ten. Reno-gate really hurt the Nor Cal scene, giving many top teams an unwanted rest. In So Cal, the Young Bucks tourney was really the only action but we saw some Teams battle it out and make more noise to get ranked. Here we go.

1. Casa Trejo Bombers- In the June ISC rankings, the Bombers moved up to 8th in the World and deserved it. Their showing in Palm Springs only added to their number one spot in California. In a good battle on Sunday in Palm Springs, the Bombers beat Team Rainey to solidify the spot. The emergence on newcomer Steve Pinocchio has been the story. Pinocchio stole eight bases in Palm Springs and proved that he has the ability to change the game as a pinch runner. He also adds defensive help and another stick off the bench.

2. Team Rainey- These guys have had a rough season so far but they are playing a very tough schedule. The addition of Sebastian Gervasutti will definately make them better, taking some of the load off the ace Bricklen Anderson. Look for Rainey to break out in Portland. In the past Team Rainey has had good showings at the Rose Cup and we have no reason to believe they won’t this year.

3 Tied. A-1 Tank- The Tank has had a few weeks off which could prove to hurt them as they were supposed to have Reno as a tune up for the Rose Cup. The ISC II doesn’t show them much love in the rankings but that’s mainly because their pitchers are unknown to the ISC II crowd. Zack Abernathy leads the way at the top of the lineup with a fiery attitude and spark plug mentality.

3 Tied. Bakerfield Lumberkings- I admit, I thought these guys would be done by now but they’ve proven to be here to stay. The ISC II committee must have seen something in the recent additions of Strang and Nimmo as they were boosted all the way to 13 in the June ISC II rankings. The Lumberkings have been playing a ruthless schedule and have been holding their own with tough ISC opponents. Having Sonny Perkins on the team has given them confidence and they show it when they play.

5. Taylor Farms- Who….. We haven’t seen much of Taylor Farms this year as they were a late scratch from The Trejo Classic in Palm Springs and they were also affected by the debacle in Reno. Guzman’s boys can still play though and we’ll see at the Best of The West.

6. Panteras- This team has proven they belong as they were able to beat Team Rainey at the Young Bucks tourney in the semifinals. The Panteras went on to take the title with a win over the Amigos and help boost them up the Top Ten. Look for the Panteras to continue rolling into the Best of The West. The arms are keeping them in the game but the emergence of Anthony Rocha and Eli Salazar has been the story. Both are tearing up the travel league hitting near .500.

7. River City Rockers- The addition of Mike Abernathy will help this team continue its winning ways. Look at the past and you’ll see that the Rockers are usually just starting to heat up. Not a bad time….when it counts.

8. Rude Pac- The Rude Pac has been a mainstay on Sunday. They have been around at the end several times this year and they are a dangerous team. Jose Sandoval leads the way with 4 homeruns in the travel league. Look for these guys to continue pressing to get up the Ten.

9. IAC – Solid squad if they ever get to play again. The Reno scandal really hurt the North. Greg Glacier leads a potent lineup that boasts some of the areas best players.

10- Romies Angels- Hunhoff wasn’t at their last tournament and they weren’t as good. If he plays every tourney they will be a top 5 team.”

Note from Al Doran

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

A few people have asked why we no longer send out so many news items by email. Well the primary reason is that it takes too long, each message takes up to 40 minutes to go to the full list.

But another good reason is that many of our subscribers now automatically go to our news site to get the news. http://www.alsfastball.com/ has all the latest news and on any given morning this time of year there are 3 or 4 stories posted by teams, fans, etc. for all to read.

Our backup site at FastpitchWest also has most of the same news
NEWS-2: http://fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball
but sometimes it takes minutes or hours for that site to post what I send them.

We will continue to try and send as many major stories as we can to the full list but we strongly encourage everyone to check the NEWS sites daily:

NEWS-1: http://www.AlsFastball.com/
NEWS-2: http://fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball
