The USA Softball junior men’s national team coaching staff will conduct an open evaluation camp for players born in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992. The open camp will be held in North Mankato, Minnesota on Thursday, August 3 from 7-9 pm at the South Central College softball field, located at 1920 Lee Boulevard. The camp will be held in conjunction with the ASA Junior Olympic National Tournament, for age groups 10-Under, 12-Under, 14-Under, 16-Under, 18-Under and 23-Under, which begins the following day at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Head coach Tim Lyon and assistant coaches Scott Standerfer and Gary Mullican, along with selection committee member Doug Lindaman will evaluate players based on throwing, fielding, hitting and timed-running drills. No prior fastpitch softball experience is required and age-appropriate baseball players are encouraged to attend. Players do not need to be participating in the ASA national tournament to be eligible to attend the evaluation camp.

The USA Softball coaching staff and selection committee are in the process of locating, evaluating and training prospective players for the 19-Under USA national team which will participate in the International Softball Federation World Championships in 2008. 70 Years of Fastpitch and Counting

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

Thanks to Bernie Lopez for this article. (For our earlier feature on Guernsey Island, click here.)

I first visited Guernsey Island back in 1989. The group of Alconbury misfits I was playing ball with crossed the English Channel via ferry boat. In a borrowed Air Force van loaded with Spam, cases of Heineken beer and bags of old softball equipment, we were ready for battle. Looking back at my first summer in Guernsey seems ages ago. Meeting friendly locals for the first time and remaining friends all these years is one of the things I consider special in my life. And going back this year to celebrate their 70th anniversary of fastpitch softball on the Island makes me feel a bit melancholy yet excited, and happy for the locals who have preserved the sport and kept it alive since its birth on the Island 70 years ago, way back in 1936.

It all began in 1935 when Canadian Duncan McMillan moved to the Island and introduced baseball to the locals. They eagerly took up the sport and soon the “Big Nine Baseball Club” was born. A year later in 1936 the move to softball was made and the Guernsey Softball Association (GSA) was established. Currently it remains one of the oldest and longest running softball associations in existence.

Team Rainey Headed to ISC World Tournament

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

Team Rainey, currently the #24 ranked team in the world, is headed to its fourth consecutive ISC World Tournament, August 11-19, 2006, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. The So Cal squad competed in 2003 in Kimberly, WI (narrowly missing the Sweet 16), in 2004 in Fargo, ND, and last year in Eau Claire, WI. In last year’s tournament, catcher Dwayne Fowler earned Second Team All World Honors, and pitcher Rick Smith tied an ISC World Tournament record with 20 strikeouts in one game.

This year, Team Rainey added young 22-year old pitching sensation, Sebastian Gervasutti, from Argentina, (“C-Bass” as his teammates call him) to go with now veteran ace, Bricklen Anderson, who hails from British Columbia. Team Rainey also added former Team USA catcher Todd Garcia, who formerly played for the highly regarded Farm Tavern team, and no stranger to ISC World level competition.

Team Rainey will open the tournament at 5pm EST against the #9 ranked Kegel Black Knights. Rainey notched its biggest win of the year against Kegel recently, beating them at the Boys of Summer tournament in Denmark, WI. Should they get past Kegel, they would face the host team, the Kitchener Hallman Twins, a team they lost a 1-0 heart breaker to in an extra inning marathon that ended at 2 in the morning.

Here is the complete roster for Team Rainey, who will fly into Toronto, then head over to Kitchener, less than an hour away:

ISC World Tournament Roster (pitchers in bold)
