Email Address for Regards to Paul Algar

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Regarding those who have written requesting an email address to send regards to Paul Algar, who was injured in a crowbar attack (see story below), we have this update:

From Al’s Fastball:

SEND ALL BEST WISHES TO palgar11 (at) verizon.net FOR PAUL

I will forward any messages to Paul’s sister as well since I don’t know how frequently he will check his own , she can print them off and work and give them to him. He is feeling a little better, they changed his medication to try to control the pain and so he can rest, and that helped a lot. I’m sure he would enjoy hearing from people it would help keep his spirits up until he is well enough to return to the States.

Thanks
Dee Algar

Crowbar Attack on Paul Algar

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Sorry to have to post this one —Fortunately, as Al Doran notes: “Fans and friends of Paul will be pleased to hear that he is OK”

From Al’s Fastball:

Crowbar attack on softballer
The Dominion Post | Tuesday, 23 January 2007
CRAIG SIMCOX/Dominion Post

UNEVEN MATCH: Former Black Sox pitcher Paul Algar tried to defend himself with a stick as a man attacked him with a crowbar after a dispute over a pool table.

Former champion Black Sox pitcher Paul Algar tried in vain to dodge blows from a crowbar-wielding attacker who set upon him after a dispute over a pool table.

Algar, a member of the 2000 World Series-winning team who now plays in the United States, is recovering in Wellington Hospital with a fractured skull and severe cuts and bruising to his head.

He needed brain surgery after the brutal attack in Titahi Bay early on Saturday.

Despite his injuries, Mr Algar, 42, is already looking forward to resuming his softball career and will not let the attack ruin his view of his homeland.

Algar plays and coaches softball in Wisconsin and was back in New Zealand for Christmas to see family in Porirua.

He went to the Mariner bar for a “few nightcappers” last Friday night.

A man playing pool had asked him to watch the table and became angry and abusive when he returned to find others using it, Algar said.

“He just kept on being an idiot, calling me names. Childish stuff really.”

The man went away and about 2am Algar decided to leave, as he was planning a dive trip with friends later that day.

As he left the tavern, he spotted the man and, concerned for his safety, pointed him out to a bouncer.

“He obviously heard that and popped his boot and grabbed a crowbar.”

Algar said he panicked and tried to grab a stick to protect himself as the man approached – and began beating him with the crowbar.

“I do remember trying to get away from the blows.”

Algar collapsed and remembered nothing till he woke up in hospital.

Witnesses told police that after Algar fell to the ground, the man struck him several times with the crowbar then jumped on him and punched him.

The man stopped only after an onlooker yelled at him.

The attacker, who was seen driving away, is described as Maori, aged 35 to 40, about 1.8 metres tall, with black dreadlocks and a distinctive tattoo around his neck.

He was wearing dark jeans and a top and a necklace.

The man was seen drinking in the Mariner earlier on Friday and police want to hear from anyone who may have seen him.

Algar said he expected to make a complete recovery and to resume playing and coaching within a few months.

Though he was unsure what had prompted the violent attack, Algar would not let it sour his view of New Zealand. “You can’t judge everyone on something little like this.”

USA Jr. Men Come to Camp This Weekend

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Coaches Tim Lyon, Scott Standerfer and Gary Mullican will have the USA Jr. Men in camp this weekend in Chula Vista, California, near San Diego at the Olympic Training facility.

Here’s a link to a story about a couple of the kids headed to the camp, in their local newspaper.

LAKE CRYSTAL —

The temperature may be in the single digits and remnants of our most recent snowfall may still be clinging to our streets, but that hasn’t prevented a couple of Lake Crystal kids from thinking about fun in the sun.

Kevin Williams and Josh Schroeder, both juniors at Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial High School, will be leaving shortly for a few days in Chula Vista, Calif. They have been invited to a Junior Olympic tryout for Team USA’s boys 18-under fastpitch squad.

The duo was spotted at last summer’s ASA National Youth Fastpitch Tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato. They filled out some informational cards during the tournament and were notified early this fall that have been invited to the tryout.

“It’s pretty exciting,” said Williams. “I was sort of surprised I got invited and it’s great that Josh gets to go, too.”

Schroeder concurs: “Kevin and I have been friends pretty much forever. We each live on opposite sides of Lake Crystal about four miles from each other.

“I think we both played pretty well in the national tournament where our (16-under) team finished third. It’s not something a lot of people get to do so we’re pretty excited.”

Schroeder’s dad, Rob Schroeder, has been a longtime fastpitch player and Josh has been tinkering around with the game for a number of years. A few years ago, Rob and Blake Meschke started coaching a youth team based out of Lake Crystal and were always on the lookout for good players.

Josh sort of helped out in the recruiting process two summers ago when he convinced Williams to join the team. The national tournament was attractive to both players for two big reasons: No. 1, it was being played between the end of the summer baseball season and the start of football. And No. 2, it was taking place almost in their own backyards at Caswell Park.

“The timing worked out great for us,” Williams said. “There’s a little transition there from baseball to fastpitch because you use lighter bats and you have to get used to the underhand pitching, but it seems to have worked out pretty well.”

LCWM baseball coach John Madsen says both players are good athletes. Madsen, who also serves as the Knights’ boys basketball coach, is a little reluctant to see Schroeder and Williams leave right in the middle of the basketball season but he understands why.

“They’re both good kids and they’re both pretty good baseball players,” Madsen said. “Kevin has been starting for us for two years and plays mostly third base and pitcher. Josh played B-squad last year but he’s going to be playing a lot of varsity for us this season.”

The Junior Olympic tryout, to which 30 players have been invited, runs from Jan. 24-28 at the Arco Training Center just outside of San Diego. Team USA officials will pare the list of players down to 17 by the 2008 season.

Rob Schroeder describes it as a unique opportunity that’s simply to good to pass up.

“We had a couple of other kids from Lake Crystal who tried out a few years ago and didn’t make it,” he said. “I think you have to go for it. Anytime you can put on a jersey that says USA across the front, that’s quite an honor.”
