Gene Farnum Passes Away

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Services set for April 18, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. in San Diego

Update 4/3/08: Thanks to Barry Woolery for passing along some photos of Gene Farnum. The one below was taken at the old fields at the Barona Indian Reservation, near San Diego, which played host to the So Cal Travel league for a number of years. Gene is shown pitching for Barry’s team, “Scottys”. A bit of gray in Geno’s beard by then, but that familiar upright pitching form, with that big right arm coming through on the delivery. As noted below, services to be held on April 18, 2008.

Here’s one that Geno would have liked, with his teammates. That’s the big man right in the center, back row, with the beard and sunglasses. The 1980 Rangers finished 5th in the ASA “A” Nationals that year in Oswego, New York, coming home with stories to tell, and inspiring many local So Cal teams to battle to get to nationals. (That’s young Barry Woolery in the enlarged version, seated, front row, far right). Barry, readers might recall is the artist that painted Hall of Famer Greg Sepulveda.

Full size team photo (click above to enlarge): Back row, L to R, Frank Westbrook, Wayne Daniel, John Willis, Geno Farnum, Keith Wren, Alan Rohrback, Jeff Leuthard and Clarence Davis; Middle row, L to R: Lowen Cook, Kim Pulliam, Motor City Mike Allen, Glenn Woolery, Willie Holt, Vince Fernandez, and Butchie (the young boy next to Vince); Bottom row, L to R: Jeff Simpson, Henry Salmon, Bobby Siquieros, Randy Irvin and Barry Woolery.

Update: 3/31/2008: The funeral service for Gene Farnum is on Friday, April 18, at 9:00 a.m. at:

Fort Rosecrans Cemetery
1880 Cabrillo Memorial Dr
San Diego, CA 92106
(619) 553-2084

I regret to report the passing of Gene Farnum. No details on funeral services yet, except that it will be at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery in Point Loma

Gene pitched for the Long Beach Nitehawks in the late 1970’s, behind hall-of-famer Bob Todd, and with the El Cajon Rangers, who took 5th in the 1980 ASA “A” Nationals in Oswego, New York, and also for the Stanley Andrews team during the 1970’s. Former teammate Barry Woolery recalled Farnum:

“Gene played for me on Scotty’s and was one of the funniest dry-humor guys I’ve ever known. He was instrumental in our 1980 El Cajon Rangers taking fifth in the ASA “A” Nationals in Oswego, N.Y.” I have many great memories of him and much respect and love.”

Editor’s note: I also had the privilege of playing alongside “Geno”. In 1983 Vista Bomber skipper Cory Davis signed Gene to pitch for us when John Odell caught a line drive that broke the index finger on his pitching hand in the very first game of the year. I recall sitting with him in the dugout at the ASA qualifier at Joe Rodgers later that year. He was joking with the players, keeping everybody loose. Having played for the legendary Nitehawks, he remained down to earth, more than happy to drive to dusty old fields, just to play the game.

The Truth be Told

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Ok, ok, the truth can now be told, our “Rude Pac Loads Up for ASA “C” Nationals” was indeed our April fools joke. Most of it was true, but the ‘Pac will not be at the ASAS “C” Nationals in Prescott, AZ in Septemeber. They were “partners in crime” on this one. Hope you didn’t mind being fooled too much 🙂 This was “the story”:

Last year, the Rude Pac came away from the NAFA World Series with the “A” Major crown, behind the stellar pitching of Spud Barker. After improving their roster even more for 2008, they were at the head of the class on many pre-season pick cards, amongst the local So Cal teams competing in the So Cal Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL).

But in Palm Springs a couple weekends ago, the Pac was knocked off in a semi-final, having to watch the Panteras and Long Beach Black Sox square off in the finals, with the Black Sox coming away the winner. Worse still, the Pac was shutout by the Panteras in their semi-final.

Now comes the news that Rude Pac has their sights set on the ASA “C” National in Prescott, Arizona, over the Labor Day weekend, after getting pitchers Spud Barker, Gerald Pyle and Mark Bennett re-classified to the “C” Division.

We’ll let fastpitch fans draw their own conclusions on this one.

Wingnuts Fall in Logo Final

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

After jumping out to a big lead in the finals against the Southern Illinois Miners, the Wichita Wingnuts fell in the finals of CNBC’s minor league baseball contest. For the full story click here. Thanks for those who took the time to vote throughout the contest and for humoring my digression from fastpitch, on my brother’s behalf. Pretty impressive run for the new club. 2nd among 252 teams, and 2nd among the 64 top logos chosen to start the contest a couple weeks ago.

For those of you who have become Wingnut fans in the process, they will open their first ever season in little more than a month, on May 7.

Wichita Wingnuts in Finals of Minor League Logo Contest !

Click logos above to vote ! (clicking logos does NOT case your vote — just takes you to the page where you can vote)

From the 252 minor league baseball teams, CNBC picked the top 64 logos. After a couple rounds of head to head match-ups, it was down to the Sweet Sixteeen, then the Elite Eight, to Final Four. Now, it’s come down to the two finalists — and my brother Bob’s Wichita Wingnuts are battling for the top spot in all of minor league baseball.

A bit more about my brother and his new team for 2008, the Wichita Wingnuts, here in an earlier post.

As the CNBC website says:

“Please take your vote seriously. There’s a lot on the line here.”

Ontario Masters “A” & “B” Championships

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

From our friend Dave Birnie, via From

[Niagara Falls, Ontario] -Calling all masters teams in Ontario, especially new teams !

The Ontario Masters “A” & “B” Provincial Championships will take place July 18th. 19th. & 20th. in Niagara Falls Ontario at Ker Park. The Ontario Amateur Softball Association ( OASA ) has added a brand new “B” division for this year. This new division was created to allow teams
to compete that normally don’t attend the Ontario Masters Championship tournament. Some
masters players / teams just aren’t quite able to compete with the elite level masters
teams. The upper level masters teams consist of several players who are still playing at a very high level with. There are tons of masters teams in Ontario that no longer attend or refuse to come to the Ontario Masters Championship because as they say ” why do I want to bring my team and get embarrassed by an all star team with a bunch of “ringer” players?” These teams now have their own “B” division to play in against other teams of the same caliber.

The new Masters “B” division has strict eligibility rules in place to ensure any “B” division teams
will be competing against teams of the same caliber. Click the following link to view these new eligibility rules :

http://www.oasa.ca/mensnews.htm

What better way to spend a weekend then by playing fastball in Niagara Falls, why not get a team together for this new Masters “B” division. Need information ? Don’t know where to start ? Don’t know how to affiliate with the OASA ? Age & Eligibility rules ? Check out the Ontario Amateur Softball Association web site : http://www.oasa.ca/

Lots of masters fastball information can be found on the Ontario Masters Fastball web site.
