Former Black Sox Namana set to make Giants return

By Gary Caffell

[Masterson, Wellington, New Zealand] – Former Black Sox Malcolm Namana will be returning to his old stamping grounds when he plays for Giants in their double header men’s softball matches with Cardinals at South Park, Masterton tomorrow.

Namana was a member of the Giants club back in the late 1980s before moving over the hill where he has played for such clubs as Totara Park, Cardinals and Poneke-Kilbirnie.

He had a season off last year but with longtime friend Tony Nixon being coach of Giants he expressed an interest in joining up with them in 2008-09, and Giants were only too happy to oblige.

Nixon and Namana actually played at club level together for both Giants and Totara Park and in 2000 they were both part of the US-based winning side at the National Softball Association world series in South Carolina.

Update, November 7, 2008:

Due to the number of teams participating this year, here are some of the changes we had to make:

Team Registration: Wednesday January 21st 7 pm to 9 pm at the Clarion Hotel Maingate West. ( Coaches Only )

Coaches meeting: Thursday January 22nd 9:30 AM. @ the Clarion Hotel Maingate West.

Game Time: Thursday January 22nd @ 1:00 PM.

** Eight teams will have to play two games on Thursday 22nd and every team will play at least one game that date.

Editor’s note: The AAU tournament started in 2000 with just 8 teams. It grew quickly to 16, 24, 28, and finally a full 32 team bracket for the past several years. Fastpitchwest, Maddysphotos and Ballparkradio have had the privilege of covering the event since 2004, and we’ll be there in 2009, our sixth consecutive year, for the biggest AAU tournament ever, bursting at the seams with forty (count ’em, 40) teams. The broadcast program on Ballparkradio grew dramatically last year, to a ten game schedule, with the Kyle Smith, Blair Setford and Billy Hillhouse in the booth. Haven’t drawn the broadcast schedule for 2009 yet, but we’ll post when we do. Forty Teams !

For a look back at last year’s Photo Galleries — one of Maddy’s largest ever — click here. The first set of smiling faces that will greet you belong to the 2008 AAU International Champions, Mac’s Sprayers.

2 Bags? That’ll Be $40

Yet another.

From The Consumerist:

Delta To Add $15 First Checked Bag Fee

The AP says that the new mergeriffic Delta will be adding a $15 fee for the first checked bag and $25 for the second checked bag when traveling domestically, which is consistent with Northwest’s existing policies.

Customers who purchased Delta tickets on or before Wednesday, and who are traveling on or after Dec. 5, will be charged $50 for a second bag, but will be permitted to check their first bag without charge based on Delta’s previous policy. Customers flying in first or business class, including SkyMiles Medallion members and WorldPerks Elite members, will be able to check up to three bags, up to 70 pounds each, for free, Delta said.
