Best of the West – May 30-31

This is the seventh in a series of team profiles for teams competing in this year’s Best of the West tournament.

Thanks to Issac Nortre for this info:

MORONGO HOSTILEZ

Howie Diaz 15
Jason “Ro” Carrizosa 14
Paul “Flip” Miranda 00
Anthony Loza 64
Issac “Dirty” Norte 22
Francisco “Jr” Torres 11
Lawrence “Lo” Alcorn 37
Julian “Julez” Gonzalez 20
Robert “Big Swole” Aguilar 56
Mel “Cuz” Shaw 39
Damen “Bonez” Leivas 27
Tommy Herrera 12
Sal Estanislao 7
Anthony “Frankie” Weiss 34
Alex Soto 05

From the team:

Hostilez are from Morongo Rez. We have 2 pitchers that can shut it down HOWIE DIAZ and ANTHONY LOZA. We play mostly local rez tournies, and a couple out of town tournaments where we seem to fare well especially against BBC. Our lineup is decent but still figuring out who plays where because everyone’s pretty much a utility player. Our main goal is to see where we stand against other teams not just rez teams.

Tri-County is a mix of crafty veterans and solid young players. As a team we have been successful in our local city league for the past few years and are trying to expose our younger guys to a higher level of play. The veterans are well known in the So. Cal. fastpitch scene and still enjoy playing the game. They welcome newcomer Jeremy Rodgers to help them in the circle this weekend. We will be playing our games at Pershing Park, where we all got our starts some years ago. We have no plans on attending any ASA nationals but you might see some of the vets return to Carson City in the fall to try to improve on last years 2nd place finish at the NAFA 45 and over. See you this weekend.

The Indonesian Softball and Baseball Association (PERBASASI) is hoping for a place in the top 10 at the men’s Softball World Championships in Saskatoon, Canada, in July.

The championship will run from July 24 to Aug. 31.

“We wish to make a surprise achievement in the Softball World Championships by getting our men’s national team into the top 10,” PERBASASI chairman Gugun Yudinar said on the sidelines of a match in the first series of the Indonesian Softball League, at the Senayan softball field in Jakarta on Friday.

The league, which started on Thursday runs until Sunday, also serves as the selection tryouts for the national team.

“I hope our team will be able to steal winning points from the Czech and South African teams, whose skills are on a par with ours,” Gugun said.

Indonesia, the silver medalist at the 2007 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, has secured a place in world championship for the first time, after finishing third in the 2006 Asian Championships in Japan behind the hosts and runner-up the Philippines.

“I’m proud of our achievement. It’s a three-step leap from the previous sixth place,” Gugun said.

Sixteen countries will take part in the world championships. Indonesia will be in the same pool as world champion Canada.

Gugun said he hoped the league would help players improve their performance ahead of the championship.

The league incorporates three series. The second series will stay in Jakarta, from Aug. 13 to 16, and the third series, which features only the top four teams, will run in Tangerang, Banten, from Oct. 2 to 4.

Eight clubs are participating in this year’s Indonesian Softball League, including Gorgeous, OCBC NISP, Bumi Asri of Bandung, Prambors, Citramuda of Jakarta, Sriti of Surabaya, Smanda of Lampung and Bats of Banten.

Prambors was the winner of the inaugural league in 2004, while Smanda won the 2006 season.

On Friday, Citramuda defeated Sriti 10-2, while Prambors triumphed over Smanda 11-3. Later in the afternoon, Bumi Asri was beaten by Bats 4-1 and Gorgeous won 9-6 over OCBC NISP.

Ex-Shepherd student D’Amour helping coach Tigers in WCWS

2007 NSA MVP Helping Women’s team at Missouri
By B.J. Soto/Journal sports writer

From the Martinsburg West Virginia Journal:

There will be a little touch of Shepherd in the Women’s College World Series.

Pete D’Amour, a former Shepherd University student, has helped coach the Missouri Tigers softball team to this week’s World Series.

The three-year volunteer assistant coach was a big asset to the team’s success this year as he threw batting practice, was the catching coach, oversaw the managers and called pitches for much of the season.

D’Amour started his college career as a baseball player at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. He played under assistant coach Ehren Earlywine, which is how D’Amour’s connection at Missouri began. Earlywine is the head coach at Mizzou.

D’Amour moved on to Shepherd in 2006 and finally finished his career last year at the University of Missouri with a degree in general studies.

But while D’Amour played baseball, it was in fast-pitch softball where he excelled.

The 29-year-old fast-pitch sensation started out at an early age in the sport. He was a bat boy for his father’s (Peter D’Amour, a member of the fast-pitch Hall of Fame) team and has played men’s fast pitch for the past seven years, holding the MVP title of the NSA World Series in 2007.

“I threw underhand before I was able to throw overhand,” D’Amour said. “I couldn’t wait to play. If it weren’t for my dad playing, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
