ISC Release on 2010 Format Change

Monday, December 7th, 2009

For immediate Release

The International Softball Congress is pleased to announce that the 2010 ISC World Tournament will be a 48-team event utilizing a modified EGC format which includes an ISC II Championship bracket.

All 48 teams will compete in the opening rounds of the tournament. The ISC II Championship single elimination bracket will be comprised of the first 24 teams that are eliminated from the ISC World Tournament bracket.

This restructuring has been approved by the ISC Executive Committee, the ISC Board of Directors and the Midland Host Committee.

Classification between ISC and ISC II will be eliminated. All teams will be able to sign pitchers who were previously on the ISC II Ineligible List including PRAWNs and out-of-region players (OOR) subject to existing limitations for PRAWNs and fees for OOR players. Please note that the maximum of two OOR pitchers is still in effect. The ISC will publish a unified set of rankings rather than separate rankings for ISC and ISC II teams.

The primary purpose of these changes is to continue providing our host cities with a sufficient number of teams and economic impact to warrant their hosting efforts and to provide teams with additional opportunities and games. It is also felt the addition of a Legends division will be appreciated by many fans.

A sample unified tournament bracket is now displayed on the ISC Web Site at www.iscfastpitch.com to show how the tournament will flow and how teams will enter the ISC II bracket. This is a sample only and any game days or times shown on this bracket should be disregarded as the final schedule has yet to be determined. All teams will be guaranteed at least three games (only 4-teams will have 3-games while all others are guaranteed 4-games). Those in the ISC II bracket will be guaranteed a minimum of four games.

Click here to view the bracket in html format and here to view a pdf version.

Here is some additional information about the 2010 ISC World Tournament:

• An informal poll of ISC II caliber teams drew 20-respones and shows that all respondents would consider entering a unified tournament that includes an ISC II championship bracket.
• To compensate for the reduction of total teams compared with 2009, the ISC will pursue the possibility of a 16-team Legends tournament to be run during the World Tournament. There will also be a 4-team U19 (Midget) tournament. Dates of both the Legends and U19 segments and Legends age-category will be announced later. It is also felt that a Legends division will be appreciated by many fans.
• A full complement of awards will be presented in all four segments; ISC, ISC II, Masters and U19.
• The 2010 ISC World Tournament is scheduled to start Friday August 13 with two games and the championship game on Saturday, August 21. The ISC II Championship game will likely be played on Thursday, August 19.
• The full statistical package that the ISC provides will be kept for all four tournament segments.
• Streaming of both the World Tournament and ISC II segments will continue as in past years. The ISC II Championship game will likely be video streamed.
• We will soon send 2010 berth allocations to our five Regional Vice Presidents and International Director for distribution among invitational tournaments in 2010. There will be 48 total berths allocated less berths that were filled in 2009 for 2010. Berths will be designated ISC Berths and we will no longer distinguish between World Tournament and ISC II ToC berths. We currently have 16 teams qualified for 2010 berths from 2009 Qualifiers plus two Midland Host Teams.
• The pre-tournament manager meeting and team registration will be held on Friday, August 13. Opening ceremonies will be held on Saturday evening, August 14.

The ISC apologizes to the Midland Host Committee for implying that it had approved the format in our release last Monday. The Midland Host Committee did not officially approve the format until today.

Red Rock Revisited

Monday, December 7th, 2009

In response to requests, Maddy is uploading some of the older galleries to her site. Recent additions include the 2007 Red Rock tournament, posted over the weekend, and noted in her blog:

I’m playing catchup this weekend and so have posted the last set of photos I took at the Red Rock tournament in 2007. As I reviewed the photos for posting it brought back many memories of that field and that tournament. One of my favorite tournament for many reasons: location, players, quality of game, I still miss shooting this tournament two years later. Click here to take you to the gallery of photos for the 2007 Red Rock Tournament and enjoy revisiting one of the greatest tournaments that men’s fastpitch has to offer. Let’s hope we can one day soon return to this beautiful venue.

Editor’s note: It was interesting to look back at those photos, taken early in the 2007 season out west. Three California teams emerged from that tournament to do great things in 2007.

The So Cal Bombers, the California Lumberkings and A-1 Taylor Farms. The Bombers were runners-up in the 2007 ISC World Tournament, while the Lumberkings and Taylor Farms finished 2-3 in the 2007 ISC II Tournament of Champions. (two teams that would combine a year later and win the ISC II T of C)

At Red Rock 2007, the Bombers topped Team Minnesota, 6-4 in the finals, with the Bomber’s Sean Whitten garnering Most Valuable Pitcher honors. Teammate Steve Pinnochio won MVP Honors. Other Bombers named to the All Tournament team included: Darren Box, Adam LaLonde, Chad Ghostkeeper, Nate Devine and Mike Butler.

Fans at Red Rock 2007 also got a chance to see 2009 ISC Hall of Famer Mike Piechnik, who pitched for Portland.

Las Vegas Road Trip III – April 9-11, 2010

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

(Click logo for official SCIFL website)

LAS VEGAS ROAD TRIP III

Happy Holidays, NAFA and SCIFL are announcing the third edition of the “Las Vegas Road Trip” men’s fast pitch tournament. The date of this tournament will be April 9th, 10th and 11th. Games will start on Friday afternoon at Sunset Park after 1:00 PM with the hope of having the games completed by 8:00PM Friday night and 9:00 PM on Saturday night. This is to allow the players and their families to enjoy Las Vegas. Championship games will be scheduled for 3:00 PM on Sunday.

Temperatures in Sin City the past two years have been very favorable, with temperatures being in the low 80’s. This will be a NAFA sanctioned event with the participating teams separated in the following divisions:

A
A-Major/AA (depending on amount of teams)
AA/AA-Major (depending on the amount of teams)

The splits in the higher classifications will be based on the amount of teams that enter. It is anticipated that 36 teams can be accommodated for this event and confirmation into the tournament will be based on the entry fee and roster being received. Last year there were about six teams that were not able to get in as the tournament filled up by mid-February. Please do not delay in getting back to me if your team will be entering into the event. Once the tournament is full, teams providing their entry fee will be placed on a waiting list and entered if any teams drop out or if additional fields are available.

The entry fee for the tournament is $400 and the NAFA 3-game guarantee bracket will be used for all divisions. It is open to all fast pitch teams and if your team has not yet paid their NAFA registration fee, there will be an additional $20 fee which will be forwarded to your State Director. With a minimum of eight (8) teams in a division, the winner will have their 2009 NAFA World Series entry fee paid for the division they played in. Also, to help keep tournament costs down, if your team books at least five (5) rooms and stays at our host hotel, Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, you will receive $25 back on your entry fee. Booking will need to be done using the 800 number and code provided in this message, rooms booked any other way cannot be confirmed through the hotel and are not used toward our count.

Team interested in playing should contact Robert Hernandez at rmh323 (at) roadrunner.com or 714-392-1387. All teams will need to submit a roster listing all their players with their entry fee. Checks can be made out to “SCIFL” and forwarded to Robert Hernandez, P.O. Box 1891, Anaheim, CA 92815-1891. Teams will be entered into the event in order of receipt of entry fees.

The host hotel for the tournament once again will be Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, providing rooms for the third year in a row. We have negotiated a very reasonable rate for the teams if you use the 800 number to book. The hotel is nice for the teams as the rooms are set up in a dorm type setting and being able to talk or hang out with each other is very easy. Arizona Charlie’s Boulder offers a casino, buffet and sit down dining along with live music in the downtown bar/lounge. Please help the tournament by booking with Arizona Charlie’s using their 800 number to receive the special rate. The number is 800-362-4040 and the reference code is C-SCIFL or mention So Cal Independent Fast Pitch League.

800-362-4040 ad reference “C-SCIFL” or So Cal Independent Fast Pitch League as the group name

Room rates:
Fri/Sat – $44 per night plus taxes for either a standard room or suite
Thur & Sun – $29 per night plus taxes for a standard room or suite
Please note that the suites will be available on a first come first served basis

These rates are by far the best that we received for similar type hotels during this time frame, most were well in the $100+ range per night. Rooms will be included in the block until March 9, 2010 so please do not delay in reserving your room. We will not be negotiating with another hotel, so once the hotel is booked or the cut off date has passed you will need to make your own accommodation’s. Last year there were a number of teams that waited until the last couple of weeks to book their rooms and the hotel did not have any more to give. At the time of booking you will be charged first night of your stay with the reminder of days being charged upon check-in. Roll-outs are available for an additional $10 per night.

Arizona Charlie’s Boulder is located 7 miles from the parks but the money saved on the rooms will be a plus for teams compared to some of the other quotes that have been received. Teams can also save at the buffet by joining the casino player program when they arrive to check in.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this tournament. I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas.

Andy Blackshaw

Dodgers plan to douse Firebirds
Dodger Andy Blackshaw in action.

DODGERS men will need to win without star pitcher Andy Blackshaw when they face USQ Firebirds in Toowoomba A Grade men’s softball fixtures tonight.

Blackshaw will be in Canberra participating in the ActewAGL Canberra Skins Tournament where Australia’s elite male softballers compete for $20,000 in team prize money.

Blackshaw has a remarkable softball portfolio that has international and national honours.

He has played in the local Toowoomba competition for the past four years and also plays in Redlands.

For three months of this year he travelled to the United States to participate in a tournament league that resulted in participation in the International Softball Congress World Titles.

He was acknowledged as the “Rookie of the Year” and intends to return in 2010.

This year he also made the Australian Open Men’s squad and participates in the New South Wales state league every second or third week in the latter half of each year.

Last weekend, Blackshaw led Redlands (Green) to victory in the Open Men’s state titles.

It was not surprising then that Blackshaw was a finalist for the Junior Male Athlete of the Year for Softball Australia recently and that he was selected in the Queensland Open Men’s softball team.

This is Blackshaw’s second selection into the Queensland side.

“It is an honour to represent the State and the second time means just as much,” Blackshaw said.

When asked why he adds Toowoomba to his long list of softball commitments he said he enjoyed the atmosphere.

“I love coming to Toowoomba every year, it’s a good competition to play and it’s competitive. There are great people playing here,” he said.

The Dodgers v Aces game is at 7pm.

In other A grade softball matches today, Warriors (Green) women will face Aces at 3.15pm and USQ Firebirds men will play the first of their double-header at 5pm against Warriors.

All Stars women will face Dodgers at 5pm, today with both going into the game undefeated it is anticipated to be an exciting match.

Editor’s note:
Readers will remember Andy’s debut on the world stage at this year’s Monkton tournament, as the #2 for The Farm, alongside ace Frank Cox, filling in admirably for the then-injured Darryl Tilley.

1st Annual Maccabi USA Invitational fast pitch Tournament – Dec 5 at Long Beach CA

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Thanks to Larry Silfen and Dave Blackburn for this info:

Welcome to the 1st Annual Maccabi USA Invitational fast pitch Tournament.

Many of us play on teams together in Burbank, Sherman Oaks and Tournaments throughout the year and have become close friends. This Tournament is to thank the participating teams for helping the U.S.A. “Open” and “Masters” teams prepare
for The 18th World Maccabiah Games in Israel this past July, and give you some background on the Maccabi USA program.

The Maccabiah games take place every 4 years in Israel and are the Jewish version of the Olympics. Players try out from all over the United States and two teams (“Open” and “Masters”) are selected to represent the United States in competition
versus teams from countries like Venezuela, Canada, Mexico and Israel. The Team USA rosters include many Division one baseball players from schools like Indiana (also played in “high” Minor Leagues) USC, Ohio State, Northwestern and the University of Hartford.

This past July in the 18th World Maccabi Games Team USA finished second to Canada in the “Open” competition, and beat Canada for the Gold in the “Master’s “ competition, which is a 35-and-over event.

The experience of representing the U.S.A. and getting to see Israel is something many of us will never forget. While we strive to win Gold medals, the Maccabi experience is as much about the journey as it is the final destination.

We plan on making this invitational tournament a yearly event, and hope that all of the teams we invited here today, will join us year after year.

Happy Holidays to all and best of luck to all of the Teams.

Below are the directions to the El Dorado Park Softball Fields in Long Beach, location of the first Maccabi USA Fastpitch Invitational Tournament, on Sat Dec 5.

Attached are two images from Google Earth of the Park and the surrounding area.

The park lies just north of the Intersection of the 405 and the 605 Freeways. It is a huge complex, that includes a
Golf course to the North and to the South of the Softball fields.

From the LA area…

TAKING THE 405 FWY SOUTHBOUND

If taking the 405 Fwy South, take it south to the 605 Fwy North. Take the first exit which is Katella Avenue / Willow Street.

Willow Street and Katella Avenue are the same road, but it is called Katella Avenue east of the 605, and Willow Street West of the 605.

Go West on Willow Street to Studebaker Road. Go right on Studebaker Road to the first right which is the driveway into the El Dorado Park complex.

When you come to a “T”, take a right, and then a quick left into the softball fields parking lot.

FROM THE 605 SOUTHBOUND

If taking the 605 south, exit at Spring Strret, and go right (West)

Go West on Spring Street to Studebaker Road. Go Left on Studebaker Road to the first left past Barrios Street,

That left is a driveway into the El Dorado Park complex. When you come to a “T”, take a right,
and then a quick left into the softball fields parking lot.

If coming from San Diego or anywhere south of Long Beach,

FROM THE 405 NORTHBOUND

If taking the 405 Fwy North, take it to the 605 Fwy North. Take the first exit which is Katella Avenue / Willow Street.

Willow Street and Katella Avenue are the same road, but it is called Katella Avenue east of the 605 Fwy, and Willow Street West of the 605 Fwy.

Go West on Willow Street to Studebaker Road. Go right on Studebaker Road to the first right which is the driveway into the El Dorado Park complex.

When you come to a “T”, take a right, and then a quick left into the softball fields parking lot.

Editor’s note:
El Dorado Park is a large regional park, but the ballfields are pretty much right smack in the middle. The section of the park that you want is bounded by Willow on the south, Spring on the North, Studebaker Road on the east and the 605 freeway on the west. Follow the little road in from the STUDEBAKER side, [the “A” on the Google map above] north of Willow. Zoom in on the map above and you’ll see the 4 diamond wagon wheel.

Nice to see a tournament so close to home again!
