Goodbye Greely, G’day Gower

Monday, February 8th, 2010

From the Eastern Ontario Fastball Blog

Men’s Fastball is Coming Back to North Gower

Competitive men’s fastball is coming back to North Gower. The fastball club formerly known as the Greely Eagles will be known as the North Gower Marlboroughs in 2010.

In addition to the move, the club is announcing the new sponsorship of the Marlborough Pub in North Gower. Captain Anil Hayne said the club was excited about moving to North Gower, and that it made sense for a lot of reasons.

“Some of our players live in North Gower, so it’s our hometown and we love it,” said Hayne.

“Plus, we have a great local sponsor backing us.”

Marlborough Pub co-owner Jason Moore said he looking forward to the partnership. He said he was impressed by the club’s sense of community, such as conducting free fastball clinics for children.

“Community involvement is important to our business,” said Moore. “We like the way these guys promote fastball and give back to kids, and we want to support that.”

The North Gower Marlboroughs Men’s Fastball Club will compete in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL).

The GOFL is a nine-team premier men’s fastball league in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

The Marlboroughs’ home games will be played at the Alfred Taylor Recreation Facility on Community Way in North Gower. The schedule is yet to be determined.

For more information about the Marlborough Pub, please visit their website: www.marlboroughpub.com.

[Fraser Coast/Hervey Bay Australia] – PLENTY of men came out swinging in Maryborough on Sunday and a few of them proved to be a big hit … playing softball.

Hervey Bay’s Jono Thomas was certainly one of them.

The Queensland under 19 representative starred with his bat during the second Maryborough Softball Association men’s Gala Day for the season at Fairfield Park.

Thomas smashed two home runs out of the ball park on the way to helping his Hervey Bay line-up beat Maryborough’s Sparx 18-8 in the final.

While Thomas shone with the bat, his team-mates, Lyam McKay (two) Shaun Mitchell and Brad Mitchell, did likewise in the outfield taking catches.

Billy Connel (two), Alister Brooks and Wal Harvey gloved catches for Sparx.

Seven teams contested the day and Maryborough Softball Association official Wendy Mathiesen said all the players had a ball.

“Not even the rain put a dampener on the day,” she said.

“It was a huge success and we’ve certainly generated a lot of interest.

“We’ll do our best to hold another one in the near future.”

Ballparkradio’s Kyle Smith broadcasting hockey live tonight

Monday, February 8th, 2010

(Broadcast is over now)

It’s not fastball, but it IS Kyle Smith, live on the ‘net, doing a hockey game tonight, on Indy 101 from Canada.

To listen, click http://www.indifm.ca and then click listen live.

He’s in good form tonight, in his inimitable fashion.

Kyle Smith, shown here, broadcasting with Brian Ballie at last year’s Monkton Fastball tournament.
Click here for Kyle’s bio at Ballparkradio.tv.

Kyle will be broadcasting a number of fastball tournaments this summer, including the ISC World Tournament in Midland, Michigan, August 13-21, 2010. Keep an eye out here at the Morning Brief for annoucements on the tournaments to be covered by Kyle, Jim, Blair and the rest of the crew at Ballparkradio. I got a peek at the draft schedule of broadcasts for 2010 tonight, and it looks like one fastball fans will enjoy.

Monkton Tournament Cancelled for 2010

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Or is it ?

From Al’s Fastball:

Monkton 2010

Friday, February 5, 2010

The Monkton Annual World Fastball Invitational scheduled for July 1-4, 2010 has been put on hold.

We do not have the official word yet however the sad news was relayed to us unoficially until a press release can be made up.

The Monkton World Fastball Invitational committee has decided to skip holding the tournament in 2010.

This will be very sad news for the large number of fans and players who regard this tournament as the best weekend tournament going.

We were informed this morning that an official press release will be sent to us early next week.

The number of emails expressing concern, grief, sadness, and asking why is absolutely overwhelming.

Proposed change of San Francisco fastpitch game night

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Current and former San Francisco fastpitch softball players:

The softball league is proposing to change our Thursday game night at Lang Field to Friday nights. We have had it for 40 years and are down to 4 teams. Playing on a Friday night is obviously more difficult to plan a weekend around…and won’t help us.

Why is it happening? Only two fastpitch games can be played on an evening. They can schedule 3 slow pitch games. Yes, there are over 300 city slowpitch teams…why not just contract their leagues to something more manageable; not ours!

Contact our Softball director with your position on this to help her see our perspective. Joann Dillon 415.831.6316 or email at j4joann (at) aol.com

many thanks,
Dirk McCall
