First Day of Spring

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

From MaddysPhotos Blog:

It is a sure sign that spring is here when the fastpitch fields are filled with players and surrounded by fans. This past weekend, and on the first day of spring, I found myself in Santa Fe Springs once again, sharing the ballfield with our local (and talented) Southern California players. Other commitments had kept me from shooting the first day of this their first tournament of the season but with camera in hand I went on Sunday to at least catch some of the action. As always, there was no shortage of action to be captured and friends to say hello to. So, although the gallery is not very extensive, I share with you what I consider the best rite of spring: playing fastpitch under sunny skies and sharing it with the best of friends. – Maddy Flanagan.

Momentum building for the ISC World Tournament, thanks in large part to the Booster Club

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

From Bob Otto’s “OttoinFocus” blog:

Written by Bob on March 23rd, 2010

“…the World Tournament is more than just a softball tournament; it’s a community event that will impact various parts of our area…” –
Kyle Beane, president of Midland Explorers Booster Club

MIDLAND, MI – One man with one good idea can bring about profound change.

Lefty Bartos is one such man. In February 1986 Bartos conceived the idea to form a booster club to help support major men’s fastpitch softball in Midland.

And from his idea sprang the Midland Explorers Booster Club. The club recently celebrated its 24th year of existence. And it’s still going strong.

Lefty has retired after many years of service to the club. But he hasn’t been forgotten.

“I’m not sure who was on the original committee that began the process, but Lefty was the driving force behind it,” said Kyle Beane, president of the Booster Club. “It was created to help support a major men’s fastpitch team in Midland that would carry on the tradition of Midland McArdles, Valley Mechanical, and the Dow AC’s.

“But without Lefty there would be no Explorers.”

The Explorers travel throughout the U.S. and Canada competing in major men’s tournaments. Much of the team’s operating expense is paid for through the fundraising efforts of the Booster Club and its legion of about 75 faithful boosters.

“We sponsor the team,” said Booster Club treasurer, Sam Dewald. “It doesn’t mean we pay every bill. The players have to dip into their own pockets for some of the expense.”
But the Boosters ease the dipping pain by paying for motel rooms, tournament entry fees, and uniforms. But the club does much more.

“The club also organizes the team’s season, runs the Boulevard Lounge tournament, and supports activities such as the Lady Explorers fastpitch team, and other youth softball activities,” Beane said, adding that the club is a (non-profit) 501c3 organization.

“And the club has supported the Vassar / Reese developmental league that focuses on bringing young men into fastpitch. And for the past two years, we’ve had a Special Olympics / Explorers exhibition game during the Boulevard Lounge tournament, which has carried over to the Special Olympics / ISC exhibition game during the World Tournament.”

HARD WORKING MEMBERS

The Booster Club is comprised of Beane and Dewald, vice president Steve Horning, secretary Ellen Beane, and board members Clint Beane, Dave Lach, Scott Stasik, Bob Waite, and Don Walter. Along with past presidents such as Jeff Servinski and Lee Isenhart.

Without the Booster Club fastpitch life would go on in Midland, Kyle Beane said. There’s still a solid base of teams playing the sport. And Emerson Park stays busy throughout the summer hosting men’s fastpitch tournaments for all levels of play.

But would the Explorers still be around without the Booster Club?

LONG-PLAYING EXPLORERS

Maybe, maybe not. But one fact stands out. With the Farm Tavern of Madison, Wisconsin recently calling it quits, the Explorers are now the longest running team in major men’s fastpitch, Beane said. 2010 will mark their 25th anniversary.

Over the past two years, the Booster Club has become increasingly busier since Kyle Beane and Dave Lach undertook an effort to bring the 2010 ISC World Tournament to Midland.

The Booster Club serves as the tournament’s host committee, with Beane and Lach serving as Co-chairmen. There’s much work to be done before the 48 World Tournament teams descend upon Midland August 14-21. And along with the teams, will follow thousands of fans who will fill Currie Stadium to see the best fastpitch softball in the world.

Although it’s been a challenging undertaking, the work is coming along just fine, said Dewald.

“I can’t begin to tell you how many hours the host committee and the volunteers have worked,” he said. “There’s been an awful lot of effort and we have progressed exceptionally well. I’d say we’re ahead of schedule.”

THE THRILL BUILDS

The excitement and the anticipation is building for the 63rd coming of the World Tournament to Midland, a city of 42,000 located in the central part of the state. On the streets and in restaurants and local businesses, people are talking about the tournament. Support has been high.

“We’ve had great support from the community embracing our efforts,” Kyle Beane said. “One of the things we focused on when talking to our partners was that the World Tournament is more than just a softball tournament; it’s a community event that will impact various parts of our area.

“The World Tournament is a tourist event – people from all over the world will be coming to Midland. It will have an economic impact. It continues a long-standing tradition of sporting excellence in Midland. Momentum has really started building toward this August.”

Jeremy Manley guides Hutt Valley Dodgers to title

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

By TONY SMITH – Sunday Star Times

Top Black Sox pitcher Jeremy Manley guided Hutt Valley Dodgers to their first national interclub softball title yesterday and said it helped “numbed the sting” of the world series loss to Australia.

Manley won the top pitcher and most valuable player awards at the NZCT men’s open tournament in Christchurch through his heady mix of power pitching and dynamic hitting and surprisingly swift base running.

Batting in the number four clean-up spot, the accomplished all-rounder slammed two hits and batted in two key runs in Dodgers’ 8-6 win over Canterbury champions PCU Devils in a thrilling but topsy-turvy grand final.

“To pitch in with the bat is huge, I’m happy with that… winning is grinning,” a beaming Manley said after collecting his team and individual awards.

“I was trying to post a zero [score-line] but they kept coming’ they’re one of the best hitting teams in the country.”

Manley was rapt to win the national crown after last year’s disappointments at the world championships in Canada. “This rates highly to help numb the sting from the world series.”

He also earned brotherly bragging rights over younger sibling Regan, who left Dodgers this season to guest star for the PCU Devils. But Jeremy played down the rivalry. “There’s no real duel there, he’s just pitching for another team now.”

Most of the Dodgers team, including popular coach Brad Baker, transferred en masse this year from Hutt City United, who they led to the 2006 national title.

Manley said they were “a great mix” of young and old” and he paid tribute to two of the elder statesman. Seasoned catcher Steven Deans “controlled things there behind the dish [home plate]”. Deans and Manley live in Feilding and drive to Lower Hutt twice a week to train and play for Dodgers.

Pinch hitter Trevor Evans, 49, produced a superb squeeze play bunt to score his son Joel from third base to spark a fifth inning rally which saw Dodgers shoot out to an unassailable 8-4 lead. “Trevor’s nearly 50. He gives us all hope,” Manley quipped.

PCU struck back with a two-run automatic home run from Black Sox star Daniel Milne, who went three from three against Manley for a perfect 1.000 average.

But Manley held on to end the game with his ninth strikeout as Dodgers outbatted PCU 11 hits to nine. PCU coach Ted Forrester hailed his team’s character to keep coming back in a game which had many momentum shifts but he rued a couple of missed catch opportunities in the outfield.

PCU beat three-time defending champions Ramblers 4-2 in the semi-finals, with two runs scoring in the eighth inning tiebreaker on controversial illegal pitching calls on Ramblers’ Australian pitcher Andrew Kirkpatrick by base umpire Nicola Ogier.

Ad Feedback
Chief umpire Wayne Saunders “strongly supported” his umpires and said Ogier called Kirkpatrick, who took 17 strikeouts, for “stepping forward with his front foot” and that all teams had been warned illegal pitching would be penalised. But Ramblers’ player-coach Donny Hale was frustrated with the calls, claiming Kirkpatrick was doing nothing different to PCU counterpart Regan Manley. He said the umpires should have been calling it from the game’s outset, not waiting “to the tiebreaker with loaded bases”. Saunders said Kirkpatrick was called on a couple of occasions earlier in the game.

Dodgers came from behind to beat Waitakere Bears 2-1 in the seventh inning after more pinch hit pressure from Trevor Evans and a costly infield error, which negated Casey Eden’s first inning home run for Bears.

Poneke-Kilbirine’s former international pitcher Thomas Cameron and Eden Roskill’s Duane Jerard were ejected from the tournament after an in-game fight yesterday morning. Cameron could not pitch in PK’s 3-5 middle-section final loss to Papanui Tigers (Canterbury).

Liberty Prevails

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Liberty may not have prevailed in some parts of the country today, but it did in Santa Fe Springs California, as Liberty Fastpitch captured the top spot among 15 teams at the SCIFL League Weekend at Santa Fe Springs California.

Veteran Eddie Patterson (a former shortstop and catcher) was in the circle for Liberty Fastpitch in their 2-1 championship game win over the Colton Dirt Bags. Liberty Building Maintenance & Services, Inc. is the new sponsor for the former Flor de Cana squad headed up by centerfielder David Carrillo and skipper Tom Dudley.

As noted at the team’s website:

In 2009, the team posted a combined record of 37-22-1. The season was highlighted by a 3rd Place finish at the 2009 North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) – A Division World Series, which drew 67 teams from around the country.

A look at the Liberty lineup, after the jump.

The SCIFL has seen a growth in the number of teams from recent years, with many teams boasting solid pitching staffs two and three deep, including the likes of Mark Bennett, Matt Barnes, Mark Higgins, Lonnie Brooks, Billy Montana, Dan Zupp, Anthony Martinez, Darrin McCall, Randy Clay, Tommy Obregon, Brett Pobantz, David Blackburn, Ronnie Rupp, and Gerald Pyle to name a few.

Robert Hernandez, who has organized the So Cal leagues for the better part of a decade, continues as the president of the SCIFL (the So Cal Independent Fastpitch League. As other leagues have fallen by the wayside, the SCIFL continues to draw teams and players from Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and surrounding areas, providing a place for top-notch competition. (California’s other top league West Coast Fastpitch Association, located in Northern California, the other)

The format for the league is round-robin on Saturdays, the results of which are used to determine seeding for Sunday’s single elimination bracket play.

On this Sunday in Santa Fe Springs California, the final four teams left standing by 1:30 PM Sunday were the two finalists, Liberty Fastpitch, and Colton Dirt Bags, along with the Long Beach Black Sox, and San Diego Primetime. The Colton squad, a new team for 2010, upset some highly regarded teams enroute to their second place finish over the weekend. The Dirt Bags have a three man–err – three person pitching staff of Anthony Martinez, Brett Pobantz and Desiree Sorrano
.
(Desiree Sorrano)

(Trying to recall a female pitcher in men’s tournament? Robin Freels, Portland DeMarini Tournament, 2004-2005 comes to mind)

The Dirt Bag team has a nucleus of players from the Colton high school baseball team, also attended by Desiree Sorrano. Sorrano was one of the top pitchers in the Pac-10 win attending Arizona State, and has quickly won they respect of hitters in the SCIFL.

The next big event for the SCIFL will be the “Las Vegas Road Trip III“, April 10-11, 2010, with no less than 27 teams currently entered for that one.

Vin Scully is doing just fine…

Friday, March 19th, 2010

From Inside the Dodgers:

Vin Scully is doing just fine…

A quick update on Vin, as news reports in LA have come out that he was admitted to the hospital this evening.

I just spoke with him a few minutes ago and he said that he simply got out of bed too fast this evening and fell and bumped his head and so for precautionary measures, he was taken to the hospital and will stay overnight for observation. However, he wanted to assure everyone that he’s fine and that he expects to be at Camelback Ranch this weekend for the telecast on Sunday.

As you can imagine, he appreciates everyone’s concern and I can assure you, he sounded just like he always does…

Las Vegas Road Trip III – April 9-11, 2010

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

(Click logo for official SCIFL website)

The third edition of the Road Trip is coming up quickly the second weekend of April. At this time there are 27 teams entered into the event. I am looking for one more AA-Major or AA team to compete in the upper division. Teams already entered into the event in this division are: CPI (NY), Cardinals(CA), Hooves (AZ), New Image (WI), Rude-Pac (CA), Si Senor, (AZ) and Sta. Cecilia (CA/MEX).

The brackets will be created shortly, if you wish to enter or would like additional information please contact me.

The two other division are set with the A-Major having 8 teams and the A coming in with 12. Unfortunately the current economy prevented some teams from participating this year but hopefully they will be able to join us next year. Complete bracket information will be posted shortly on the SCIFL web site: www.scifastpitch.com

Voice of the Ballpark (radio)

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

VOICE OF THE BALL PARK
from The Tavistock Gazette, Wednesday, March 17, 2010

At any time during the summer Kyle Smith can be found in a ballpark in southwestern Ontario. Whether he’s umpiring, coaching or calling the play-by-play, Kyle seems to spend more time in the park than he does at home.

Going from player to umpire to coach to announcer for Ballparkradio, Kyle has supplied the play-by-play for hundreds of games over the past few years and has become a fan favourite.

Using catch phrases he learned while growing up in Hickson, Ontario, “Kyle brings an exuberance to the job that belies his age,” reads his bio on Ballpark-radio.tv. At 28 years, he is the youngest personality in the radio booth and provides a lot of energy for the entire crew. Kyle is currently going into his fifth season with the broadcasters.

Born in Woodstock, Kyle was raised on the family farm on the 14th Line of East Zorra-Tavistock. A son of Barry and Debbie Smith, the family moved into Hickson in 1989. Kyle has an older brother, Trevor, and a younger sister, Caitlin. Kyle attended Hickson Central Public School and Huron Park Secondary School in Woodstock.

In those early years he played fastball for Hickson Minor Ball teams as pitcher, catcher, and in just about every other position on the diamond. As he got older, his knees started giving him trouble, so he opted for umpiring. He remembers Dave McLaren, Gene McLaren, and Jim Harmer as his mentors at the beginning, however, “It was Darrell Ford who got me involved,” Kyle said. Kyle worked his way through the umpiring ranks and earned jobs at just about every diamond in the area officiating at tournaments and regular South Perth and Tri-County Fastball League games. During this time he also coached the Hickson Bantams to an ORSA Ontario championship title.

Kyle joined the Innerkip Umpires Association and has played his part in hosting the Annual Gord Marshall Memorial Women’s Fastball Tournament. In its seventh year, the umpires partner with the Canadian Cancer Society and have raised more than $40,000 for cancer research. Twenty-four teams from as far away as Windsor, Chepstow and Hamilton sign up for the tournament played in two divisions the weekend of July 22-25. Kyle is sure to be there wearing a different hat and working as an umpire during the event.

A student of the game of fastball, hockey and almost every other sport, Kyle acquired an interest in the work of various radio and television personalities at a young age. Following high school he enrolled in the Radio Broadcasting Program at Mohawk College. He didn’t like the idea of being a disc jockey and sitting alone in a room. He wanted to be out talking with people so play-by-play announcing peaked his interest. He graduated in 2003 with hours of experience through providing the colour commentary at Hamilton Kilty Bees Tier II Jr. A hockey games. Now called the Hamilton Red Wings, Kyle has been calling the play-by-play for the past couple of years each and every Monday night. The program can be found streaming live on the college radio station INDI 101 and online at www.indifm.ca.

With his interest in fastball, Kyle had also been a fan of Ballparkradio when he couldn’t get to the park. In 2006 he was in touch with Joe Todd of Ingersoll, another announcer with Ballparkradio, and Kyle offered them his resumé and services. The following season, Ball-parkradio owner and founder Jim Flanagan contacted Kyle with some dates to call games, but with no promises. Ready to leave after his scheduled broadcasts, Jim asked Kyle to stick around for another game. “I jumped right in,” Kyle remembers. “After that, everything took care of itself.”

Kyle has travelled to Florida to broadcast AAU International Fastpitch tournaments as well as International Softball Congress (ISC) tournaments in Iowa, Wisconsin, Kitchener, and at the International Softball Federation Junior Men’s World Championships in 2008 in Whitehorse, Yukon. This year his play-by-play will be heard throughout the summer at qualifying tournaments culminating with the ISC World Tournament in Midland, Michigan in August.

At college, Kyle was involved in student government on the students’ association and served as a residence advisor where he was named Advisor of the Year.

He earned a college position on a contract basis for one year and developed a presentation for first year students.

Moving back home to Hickson, he found work at Clemmer Steelcraft in Woodstock where he worked until February of 2009. Layoffs found him searching for work and fellow Innerkip umpire Brad Hallock hired him as assistant district sales manager for Pride Seeds. Through his association with Shur-Gain and Dave Bates, Kyle then began as a dairy ruminant representative with crop sales for Yantzi’s Feed and Seed Ltd. in Tavistock. He began working from the office at the new elevator on the Sebastopol Road in November of 2009. With Yantzi’s he is currently enrolled in the Dairy Nutrition Advisor Program at Shur-Gain.

Kyle is a relatively new member of the Hickson Lions Club as well as a longtime member of the Innerkip Umpires’ Association.

While in his first year at Mohawk College, Kyle met Candice Gardner and the couple has been together since May of 2002. She graduated from the Advertising program and is currently an administrative assistant at the Mohawk College Alumni Department in Hamilton.

Ballparkradio has a number of committed broadcasters – Jim Flanagan, Blair Setford, Joe Todd, Lance Winn, and Kyle. There is also an every-growing group of people getting involved in the production, Kyle said. Kyle is looking forward to the new season with a lot of international and local tournaments on the agenda.

“All I need is a laptop, a mixing board, a headset and a reliable internet connection,” Kyle said, to get him up and running. The rest is easy. An advertising script, a player list, and the current statistics, are all he needs. With his experience and excitement for the game, you won’t want to turn the dial.
