Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

From Maddysphotos.com:

“Thanks to the many people who have inquired about photos taken at the 2009 ISC II Tournament of Champions. I just returned to California today, Monday, August 24, 2009 and have begun the “post tournament production work” on the huge batch of photos taken at the tournament and expect to have them up for viewing and purchase this week.

Thank you to those of you who have emailed me and to those who I ran into at the tournament for your kind words on my photography. I hope this batch will live up to the compliments.

Stay tuned for the photos, they are coming right up !”

More Maddy’s Photos – Las Vegas 2008

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

We’re pleased to share another batch of Maddy’s Photos. These were taken at the SCIFL league weekend last year in Las Vegas, but didn’t make it to the website. Better late than never — we thought you’d enjoy them just the same. That’s Matt Shaw of the So Cal Hustlers that you see center stage when clicking in. And umpire Clyde Bennett behind the plate.

If you spotted one non-west coast team in the mix, you’ve got a good eye. That is Jeramie Holman and the boys from New Image, who traveled to Sin City for some sun and fastpitch. Always liked that “NI” – NY Yankee look-alike logo. Well, except for the time they beat my Rounders team at the NAFA World Seriers. And yes, that’s Josh Johnson on their travel roster. “Tournament in Vegas?” “Sounded like a good road trip, I’m there”.

But those fields needed more than a little bit of water, eh?

Good stride by this young hurler from Utah.

Hey Graham, last guy to make the cover of Sports Illustrated with a one of those was ….Dick Allen of the Phillies back in 1972.

“Youth shall be served” — the kids from Cedar Ridge Utah.

“He said he didn’t want to come out, but I told him, you’ve got nothing on the ball today“.

Great effort — and the grass stains to prove it.

So much speed, you’d swear his feet never touch the ground.

Don’t look at me – I told you to pack the sun-block.”

Proof that not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Fastpitch Photographer and Writer Establishes New Blog

(click photo to visit Bob Otto’s new blog)

We are pleased to share a note from our friend Bob Otto, who served as the official photographer for the ISC for a number of years, and whose work provided the inspiration for Maddy’s photos. Bob generously permitted us to display many of his photos, and post his feature stories in the early days of Fastpitchwest. For those that don’t know him, he was a longtime fastpitch pitcher in Southern California, playing in the days I competed against him, for Chuck Vranich’s Matthew Bronze team. He is also a longtime fastpitch photographer, and penned some great feature stories on the game and its players, which have appeared at Al’s Fastball, the ISC website, and here at Fastpitchwest.

Bob has a new blog up, and a link to a site displaying some photos from the 1994 ASA Major tournament held in Palm Springs. With a large library of negatives, he tells us that we can look forward to seeing more in the future. Here is his note:

My son Brian finished setting up a blog for dear old dad today, and I posted some of the photos I shot of the 1994 ASA Men’s Major National Tournament at Palm Springs. I thought maybe some of the readers would like to see the photos.

There’s teams like Decatur, All Car, The Farm, Seafirst, Hearts of Bloomington, Il., Jack & Do’s, The Long Beach Painters….

Many of the players have retired, and most were shot in B&W, so that gives it a nostalgic feel, I think.

I’ve got thousands of negatives to go through in which 90% of the photos haven’t been seen by the public. But it takes a lot of scanning, which means I will be at this for a long, long time to come. So look for more men’s fastpitch galleries (many ISC WT) in the future.

Click here to visit his blog, www.ottoinfocus.com. Then click the link there to see the 1994 ASA Major Nationals photos. You’ll find some household names there, including Peter Meredith, pitching for Larry Miller Toyota, and Chub Tangaroa, pitching for the Decatur Pride. Hard to believe it’s been 15 years since then.

Men’s Fastpitch Blog in Pennsylvania

Friday, February 13th, 2009

We ran across a new blog for men’s fastpitch in Pennsylvania, which today posted a link to our ISC II blog, “The Deuce”. The mission statement for the PA blog is as follows:

The intent of this blog/webpage is for the discussion of men’s fastpitch softball played in Pennsylvania. My hope is that the blog will allow teams to provide me with pictures, statistics, and team information. It would also be nice to be able to add schedules and team results as tournaments are being played. The discussion and content will be for ALL teams that play in Pennsylvania. Please send all pictures, information, and questions to baller55@live.com

The blog currently has a poll question posted.

Thanks to Pennyslvania for the shoutout to “The Deuce”, and to Blair Setford for his work in ID’ing the many ISC II player photos from Maddy’s 2009 AAA Galleries. Blair’s original post is here.

A Note About Photos

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

A commenter to MaddysPhotos.com writes about the 2009 AAU Photos:

“Cant seem to find any pics of the team from ohio. Why is this ? Ohio teams are always left out but always in the running this year I think 5th”

A reply was posted to the commenter, but in case you don’t see it there, you’ll find some on pages 18, 19, 22, 23, and 24 of the galleries.

Editor’s note: From time to time, we receive emails asking why there are no photos of a particular team or player. Let me apologize in advance to anyone left out or who feels left out. It’s going to happen, despite best efforts.

This year’s AAU tournament had 40 teams, playing on six different diamonds, two of which were located in the north 40. That’s about 600 players, give or take, plus tournament officials and fans. Maddy arrived late Thursday night, started shooting first thing Friday morning, and shot straight through the title game on Sunday, about 3000 shots in all. (enough to develop some serious carpal tunnel on that trigger finger :-)). She works hard to try to get photos of as many teams as is possible. I know because she’s left me at the hotel early in the morning, more than a time or two, in order to cover a team that she’d otherwise miss.

The process to review and process the photos takes a solid weekend of work at the computer, and some tough choices about which ones to post. In the end, she tries to choose a cross-section of teams, include her best shots, that capture the action, story and feel of the tournament. Due to legal (patent) limitations, she is limited to 500 photos per event. (lawyers!) So that means about three-fourths of the shots she took wound up on the cutting room floor. (Some good ones of you, no doubt) 🙂 If you don’t find the photos that you’re looking for, chances are you will in time.

Anyway, you can write to Maddy directly at maddy (at) maddysphotos (dot) com.
