Ballparkradio Archives (from Erie and more)

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Did you miss the Erie tournament broadcasts over the weekend? Perhaps you were working but want to catch the reply. Or maybe you were busy on the field actually playing in the games, but want to hear how the game(s) sounded to fans?

You can catch all the action “on demand” at the Ballparkradio archives. (click the blue “Archived” buttons after you click the link)

The “instant archives” are part of the newly designed Ballparkradio website, which permit us to get the games up moments after the final out is recorded. Hope you enjoy them. For those who have asked, we will be working, at season’s end, on getting many of the broadcasts from prior years posted to the archives.

Editor’s notes: The broadcasts featured our lead play-by-play man, Kyle Smith. Judging from the emails we received from listeners, his work on the four games was well received. I listened to the games from California, getting a “fan’s ear view”, and thoroughly enjoyed them. Kudos to Bill Hillhouse as well. Bill is one of the best color men around, and somehow found the time to wear three hats over the weekend – pitcher for the NY Gremlins, color commentator on Ballparkradio when he wasn’t playing, and, tournament director. Some of his behind the scenes work may not have been noticed, but was appreciated. Bill listened to the teams when they said they want 6 teams, not 4 to advance to Sunday’s championship bracket, incurring the extra cost of making that happen. Additionally, he made several trips to the field to test out our Rovair.com internet card, to make sure that we could connect for the broadcasts in a place where no internet existed. The little things often make the biggest difference.

Kyle Smith is fresh off of anchoring the broadcasts at three major tournaments in past month with top flite teams – Legends of Fastball in Kitchener, the Tavistock tournament in Tavistock Ontario, and the Erie Tournament in Erie PA. No rest for the weary though, as he will be right back in the broadcast booth on Tuesday night, where will anchor four nights of broadcasts from the Canadian Midgets youth tournament in Stratford, Ontario. Keep an eye out for the schedule of games, but last we heard, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 8pm EDT was the first broadcast. A half dozen or so broadcasts, culminating in the championship game at week’s end. On Ballparkradio.com of course. The Stratford tournament will be the seventh tournament of the year carried live, starting with the AAU International tournament in Orlando, Florida, back in January.

And, last, but anything but least, Kyle will be sitting in the anchor’s chair for the upcoming ISC World Tournament from Midland, Michigan, August 13 through the 21st.

Ballparkradio at Erie Tournament – July 31 – August 1

Monday, July 26th, 2010

It has been a busy summer for Ballparkradio’s Kyle Smith. This coming weekend, July 31-August 1, he’ll take the show on the road once again, to Erie Pennsylvania, to broadcast the Erie Tournament on live streaming audio to a worldwide audience. It marks the third tournament in little more than a month, following trips to Kitchener for the Legends Fastball Classic, and Tavistock tournament a couple of weeks ago.

Kyle will be joined in the booth by Bill Hillhouse and Derek Pukash — at least when their team, the NY Gremlins, isn’t playing. Hillhouse will wear a third hat as well, serving as the tournament director.

Just for good measure, on his “off” weekend in July, Kyle helped spearhead a cancer-fighting fund raiser.

Did you miss some of the earlier broadcasts, but want to listen to the games? Check out the archives section of our newly designed broadcast website.

The broadcasts in Erie PA will be made possible by use of wireless card, provided courtesy of Rovair.com. The wireless card is a USB device (“rocket stick”) that provides a cell phone style connection to the internet. Ballparkradio first used the device in Santa Barbara earlier this year, to broadcast the Best of the West tournament. The lack of internet connection at many venues had been an impediment to broadcasting, but no more, thanks to Rovair.com.

(Rovair.com rents the devices on a per day basis, great for travelers who need a portable internet connection from time to time, but don’t wish to sign a two year contract and pay expensive monthly fees to boot. For more information, click the Rovair logo above. Be sure to tell them Ballparkradio sent you)

A special thanks to Erie Tournament director Bill Hillhouse, who made several trips out to the ballpark to test out our USB wireless card, to be sure of our internet connection in advance.

Watch Live Streaming Video Broadcasts from the 2010 ISC World Tournament

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN – The International Softball Congress (ISC) announced today that they will feature live broadcasts of selected games from the 2010 ISC World Tournament at Midland, Michigan.

The live video broadcast schedule kicks off with the two-time defending ISC World Champions, the Kitchener Rivershark Twins, on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 4:00 PM eastern, a game offered free of charge to all viewers.

The ISC will offer an “All Access” pass, which will provide fans with online access to at least twenty-four (24) live video broadcasts, as well as access to archived broadcasts during the week for any games they might miss. The cost of the “ISC All Access” pass is $49.95, if purchased on or before August 9, 2010, or $59.95 if purchased thereafter. The “early-bird” purchase translates to just over $2 per game.

Fans will also be able to access individual games on a pay-per-view basis. Each game will be available live and on-demand at a rate of $6.95 per game to non-All-Access subscribers.

Additional games will be broadcast on live streaming audio at no charge.

The streaming media broadcast program for the International Softball Congress is now in its 10th year, headed up by Executive Producer Dave Blackburn. Dave brought streaming media to the ISC World Tournament and the fastball world back in 2001, with help from technical guru Greg Panos. Dave had this to say about the 2010 Live Streaming broadcast program:

“Our broadcast team is very excited about our plans for streaming many live games from the 2010 World Tournament. After four years of continuous improvement in producing our own online video telecasts, and offering those for free, in 2010 we are evolving to a Pay-Per-View online delivery model. This is the most viable way for the ISC to continue our efforts to provide this unique live and archival coverage to our global audience of fastball fans long into the future.”

The ISC World Tournament broadcast program operates a four camera set-up, with play-by-play announcers and color commentators. Assistant Streaming Producer Rosanne Allan will work with Dave Blackburn on production, and full-time cameramen Gerry and Mike Betz will be back for their sixth and fifth years respectively.

Broadcast program directors Blair Setford and Jim Flanagan will join play-by-play anchors Kyle Smith and Lance Winn in the booth, along with Joe Todd and other guest color commentators. Smith and Winn are both broadcast professionals. Winn works in Canadian sports TV while Smith works in the Toronto area, doing minor league baseball and hockey in addition to his fastball work, and serves as the lead broadcaster for Ballparkradio. Joe Todd has been broadcasting for the ISC since 2003.

In 2010, the ISC will break new ground, offering its first ever Spanish language audio broadcast, in collaboration with Cristian Lacout of Softbol Radio , based in Argentina. The remote-connected broadcast will be available to a world-wide audience, free of charge.

Kyle Smith’s Post-Game Interviews at Innerkip ISC Qualifier

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Ballparkradio is pleased to share audio clips of Kyle Smith’s post-game interviews from last weekend’s Innerkip ISC Qualifier, including:

Mel Ross
of the Kitchener Outlaws
Gene McLaren of the Hickson Reds
Shaun Winship of the Alvinston Indians
Joe Triest and Paul McCart of the Alvinston Indians

Click the green “Listen Archive” button to visit the new “Audio Clips” section of the newly remodeled Ballparkradio website:

(After clicking green button, scroll down the page to choose the clip you want to hear)

Volume warning – the first clip will start to play when you click the link, so if you’re at work, you might want to hit the mute or turn the volume down. Unless, of course, your boss is a fastball player or fan. In that case, invite him or her in to listen !

You will also find my own personal favorite clip, Kyle Smith’s dramatic call to the finish of Canada over New Zealand medal round game at the ISF Jr. World Championships at Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, 2008.

Click here for the Sunday recap for Innerkip Qualifier

For fastball fans that have asked about the archived broadcasts of the three California Classic tournament games that were carried live on Ballparkradio last weekend, we hope to have those up by this coming weekend.

Lastly, we want to mention the newest sponsor of Ballparkradio, Rovair.com, which rents wireless broadband cards, permitting you to have an internet connection wherever you go. We used one of their cards for our internet connection in Santa Barbara, California, to broadcast the Best of the West title game. The Rovair.com wireless broadband connection opens doors to venues that we could not previously broadcast from.

Most cell phone companies charges $60 a month for wireless broadband card and require a two year contract for the privilege. Rovair.com will rent you a card for the weekend, and provide shipping to and from. Or if you need one more often, try their “Rovair on Demand” service – you keep the wireless card, and just call them activate when you need it, for $5.95 a day.

Click their logo above, to find out more about Rovair.com – and if you decide to use their services, be sure to tell them that Ballparkradio sent you.
