The team will be coached by John Love (Auckland) and Phil Johnston (Canterbury).

The squad will be preparing for the World Series Under 19 Tournament to be held in Parana Argentina in 2012.

Editor’s notes: As is so often the case in major league baseball and in men’s fastball, talent seems to run in the genes, with some families continuing to produce top notch players. Peruse this list and a few names jump out at you, even for those of us living far away from New Zealand……Rona, Enoka, Sorenson, as the next generation of fastball stars spread their wings….

The Jr. Black Sox finished 4th in the ISF Jr. World Championships at Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada in 2008, making the 4 team playoff round, but missing the medal stand, behind Australia, Canada and Japan, respectively. The Jr. Black Sox showed flashes of gold medal play — as the only team in Whitehorse to knock off the 4 time-gold medalists from Australia (during round robin play), but did not play consistently enough to medal. If they were building momentum towards the playoff round, it appeared to be extinguished by a late inning loss to Argentina, with a memorable game ending triple play by Argentina. Their rematch with Argentina should prove to be one of better draws in 2012, with Argentina hosting in Parana, just outside of Buenos Aires.

At the ISF Jr. Worlds in 2008, the teams seemed to break into three distinct groups:

Medal Round Playoff teams:

AUSTRALIA
CANADA
JAPAN
NEW ZEALAND

Of this group, with four consecutive gold medals over nearly two decades of play, AUS remains the team to beat, in spite of the loss to NZ and near loss to Canada in the title game. Game in, game out, they are the deepest and most seasoned team, and the one that looked like they had played a great number of games together– a key element that I think separates these teams from the rest — high level game experience. In 2008, other than the Kiwis win over Australia, Canada appeared to be the only team that could really go toe to toe with the Australia in the talent department. Canada went from bronze to silver, and figure to vie for gold in 2012. In the two prior World Championships, Canada played at home (PEI in 2005, Whitehorse in 2008). It will be interesting to see how they play as the visitors. (It worked out well for another Canadian squad, the Kitchener Rivershark Twins, who were twice denied in the 2007 and 2008 ISC World Tournaments, at home in Kitchener, only to win back-to-back titles on the road in Kimberly WI and Quad Cities, IA. )

Mid-tier-battling to get onto the medal stand

ARGENTINA
USA
MEXICO
VENEZUELA

An evenly balanced group, with a slight edge to ARG and USA ahead of MEX and VEN. Of these four, Argentina might be the most likely to break through to the next tier, with good pitching, and the hometown fans to cheer them on. Pitching will be the big question mark for the USA, with ace BJ Hunhoff graduating from the program, as well as James Hartman. The USA was 1-4 in close games, losing to Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Argentina, defeating only Mexico. Had they beaten South Africa, as most thought they would/should, and win one of the one-run games, they finish 7-4 and are knocking on the door for medal contention. The USA coaching staff will be back again, with Tim Lyon, Scott Standerfer and Gary Mullican, providing a strong base to build on. Their challenge will continue to be to find and develop pitching, something hard to come by for the Yanks. Even at the senior level, the top spots on the staff were occupied by Canadian born hurlers (Koert and Price). Lyon is determined though, and continues to beat the bushes for raw talent, and in hope that he has time to develop it by 2012.

Bottom-tier-not yet competing

DENMARK
CZ REPUBLIC
SOUTH AFRICA
BOTSWANA

These bottom tier programs are still building a talent base to compete. The European teams were a notch above those from Africa, consistent with the number of years the countries have had, or not had a 19u program. Each of the bottom tier teams had a player or two that stood out, making this group capable of knocking off someone at the next level in a given game (as South Africa did to the USA), but still a ways from moving into the mid-tier group.

By 2012, nearly all teams with have complete new rosters, so these comments are based more on the programs than the teams that we’ll see in Parana in two years.

ISF Pitching instruction to Sudan

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

(rough translation)

ISF men’s senior head coach for Argentina will be in Sudan Sudan to teach softball for three days, from 16 to 18 April. Coach Sabate, will be giving instruction Argentina as part of society Olympafrica ISF, as announced at the end of 2009.

In preparation for the course, the ISF has sent two “starter kits” to Sudan. The boxes contain softball bats, balls, gloves, helmets and equipment for the catcher to be used by participants. Participants will be teachers, and the activity happen in indoor and outdoor facilities of Sahafa Olympafrica Centre.

Editor’s note: Eduardo Sabate is known to many of us in North America as the father of Argentine pitcher Francisco “Sisko” Sabate. Eduardo Sabate was the head coach for the 2008 ISF Argentine Jr. team which traveled to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada for the 2008 ISF Jr. World Championships. His team turned in a game ending triple play in their first-ever win over New Zealand. Coach Sabate has moved up to coach the Argentine senior men’s team, which will compete in the 2013 ISF World Championships in New Zealand.

SELECT SOFTBALL COMPANY

Few would be surprised to hear that Olympics star Jennie Finch was named USA Softball’s female athlete of the year for 2009.

Softball’s male athlete of the year, however, received little notice — until now.

Des Moines player Matt Palazzo led the national team to a fourth-place finish at the ISF Men’s World Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Palazzo led the team with a .444 average and four home runs, while driving in 11 runs and scoring nine times as the team finished 7-3.

“To wear red, white and blue and represent your country is such an amazing thing,” Palazzo said.

Yukon Gets Women’s 2012 ISF World Championship

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Unique locale will host top women’s international softball event

PLANT CITY, FLORIDA (USA) — Whitehorse, Yukon, will host the International Softball Federation XIII Women’s World Championship in 2012, it was announced today. ISF President Don Porter said that a solid bid from the host and a successful track record made it the right choice for the marquee fast pitch event.

“Whitehorse will do a terrific job hosting our women’s world championship in 2012,” the ISF president said. “They proved as much when they organized our junior men’s world championship in 2008. Plus the community’s support for softball and their proven ability as a site for large sporting and cultural events assures us that our teams, the fans, and the media will all have a good experience that summer.”

The unique location brings with it over 20 hours of daylight, which allows for softball games – on unlit fields – well into the evening hours. The playing facilities in Whitehorse have multiple fields, which will allow the organizers to meet what is generally a ten-day, 60-plus games schedule.

“Softball Yukon and Softball Canada are pleased to again be able to host the world,” said George Arcand, Executive Director of Softball Yukon and the Chair of the Organizing Committee for the 2012 World Championship. “After hosting a successful and exciting junior men’s world championship in 2008, we are honored to host the 2012 women’s world championship in Whitehorse. We look forward to working with the ISF to make this an unforgettable experience for our local community, fans from all over the world, and all participating teams.”

The event in Whitehorse will come just two years after the XII Women’s World Championship, which happens this June 23-July 2 in Venezuela. As such, it fulfills the implementation of a two-year rotation for ISF world championships instead of every four years. That change was adopted at the ISF Congress this past October. Next year will be the final year of only one world championship (junior women’s, December 6-17, 2011, in Cape Town, South Africa). 2012 will also include the ISF IX Jr. Men’s World Championship (19-and-under) in Parana, Argentina.

The women’s world championship in Whitehorse in 2012 is expected to take place in July of that year, with exact dates currently being finalized.

Editor’s note: Kyle Smith and I (Ballparkradio) had the opportunity to visit Whitehorse, Yukon in the summer of 2008, to broadcast the ISF Jr. Men’s World Championships. Tournament Director George Arcand, of Softball Yukon was an outstanding host – to us — and to the teams, players, coaches and fans, so the women are in for a great experience in 2012. George is a “hands on” tournament director, with great attention to the details that make for a great tournament. Kyle and I arrived at the fields about 11pm at night – and found George sitting atop a large lawnmower, going over the outfield grass for the games to be played the following morning. No lights – but with 23* hours of daylight during the summer, none needed. Where is Whitehorse you ask? Well, take a peek at the map, where you can see it’s up by Alaska. To give you an idea how far north, I flew from Los Angeles via a stop over in Vancouver, and that was the HALFWAY mark. The fans turned out in droves, and provided an electric atmosphere for all.

.

*Yes, I know the ISF article above says “20 hours of daylight”, but our experience was that it virtually never gets dark, save an hour or so in the wee hours of the morning where it gets “dusky”, as they call it. It does take some getting used to, but certainly provides some long days of daylight for the tournament.

Don Bates Named Head Coach of Canadian Men’s National Softball Team

Monday, December 14th, 2009

(click logo for original news story)

(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is very pleased to announce that Don Bates (Saskatoon, SK) has been chosen as the Head Coach of the Men’s National Team program. Don was an assistant coach with the Men’s program since 2006, and also served as an assistant coach with the Senior Women’s Olympic Team in 2008. Bates will replace Mark Smith (Falmouth, NS), who stepped down earlier this year to take on the Head Coach position of the Women’s National Team program.

“I am honored to assume the position of Head Coach of the Canadian Men’s National Softball Team” stated Don Bates. “The program has a rich tradition of being one of the best in the world. I look forward to working with Canada’s top male softball athletes as we begin our initial preparation for the 2013 ISF World Championship in New Zealand.”

A Level III coach working towards obtaining his Level IV certification, Don has also helped Softball Canada on the administrative side of the game. He has been a member of the Long Term Athlete Development Steering Committee, and just recently accepted to chair the committee at the 2009 Annual General Meeting held in Ottawa. A retired school principal who now runs Saskatchewan’s first High School Softball Academy, Don will devote most of his time to promote and teach the sport of softball.

“It will be a real pleasure to have Don Bates on board as the Head Coach of our Senior Men’s National Team program” said Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn. “Don is highly respected in the softball community for both his softball expertise and his ability to work cooperatively. Don has great technical knowledge, especially in the pitching area, and will be a real asset in developing young athletes as we start our rebuilding process. I am extremely pleased that Don has accepted the challenge and look forward to working with him in the future.”

The Senior Men’s National Team recently won a Bronze medal at the 2009 ISF Men’s World Championship held in Saskatoon, and is always considered a Gold medal threat.

“With a number of our current National Team players retiring from competitive play, one priority over the next two years will be to identify our top young players who appear ready to make the transition to International competition” assessed Bates. “These players will need to be exposed to top International competition to gain the experience required for success at the ISF World Championship. I look forward to working closely with the Provincial/Territorial associations as we begin the process of identifying and developing our National Team roster players.”
