The Pirates made it to the Elite Eight last year, falling to eventual finalist Team Minnesota in the quarterfinals. They’ll have to compete in Pool G with one of last year’s Final Four teams, the NY Gremlins (Knights), along with the Manor Dirt Bags of Texas, and the Brewers of Venezuela.

Pool G

1. Gremlin Knights – NY
2. Texaco Pirates – Bahamas
3. Manor Dirt Bags – TX
4. Brewers de Venezuela

Haziel Mcdonald’s squad was the AAU Consolation winner back in 2004, the first year that Fastpitchwest and Maddysphotos traveled to Orlando for the big event. They have continued to build their roster by adding talented ISC level players, including many of the big names on the year’s squad, while retaining the core nucleus of the team who live on Man-O-War, Willie Weatherford, Grant Albury, Andrew Albury, Fred Sweeting, and of course, the skipper, Haziel Mcdonald. (picking up the 2004 Consolation Bracket trophy from tournament director, Alex Linares)

The Bahamian squad was featured in a 2007 Softball Magazine feature about their first Bahamas Invitational Tournament, “The Real Pirates of the Caribbean“. Click here to view, but note that it is a large PDF file, with color photos, so give it time to load on your computer.

Lots of Pirate pics in Gallery 8 of last year’s set of photos here.

And last but not least, for those of you in “snow country” day dreaming about playing ball in warmer locales, click here for a look at the home, and home field of the Texaco Pirates on Man-O-War, Bahamas.l

* Managers of Manor Dirt Bags, and Brewers of Venezuela – need your rosters, please send to us at jim (at) fastpitchwest (dot) com. We’ll post and forward to Al Doran. You’re next up in the “Pick the Winner” poll.

Carl Hansen Tournament – Salt Lake City, UT

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Carl Hansen (Page Brake) Men’s Fastpitch Tournament

July 11 & 12, 2009 – Cottonwood Complex – Salt Lake City, UT
Entry fee: $375 – entry deadline June 26, 2009
Contact to register on-line: Salt Lake County Parks & Red www.slcorecsports.com
Tournament Director: Les Vaughan lavaughan@platt.com
UIC: To be named later
Format: 4-game guarantee

Editor’s note: The 1992 ISC World Tournament was hosted at the Cottonwood Complex, as well as a long string of Pioneer Days Tournaments, into the early 1990’s. The latter was considered the premier tournament in the “West” for many years, thanks to the work of current ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister.

Carl Hansen, for whom this tournament is named is the longtime sponsor of Page Brake, which was the arch rival of their Salt Lake City counterpart, Larry Miller Toyota, in the days when two giants (literally) of the mound would square off, Page Brake’s Neil Chadwick, and Larry Miller’s Peter Meredith.

Great to see SLC back on the radar.

2008 AAU Clip on YouTube – Budke Triples

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Speaking of the AAU, here is a clip from last year’s tournament, semi-final game between Team Minnesota and the NY Gremlins. In this clip, Todd Budke triples home Rhys Casley for a run, though Minnesota would come back to win the game and advance to the championship game against the eventual champions, Mac’s Marauders.

Update, November 7, 2008:

Due to the number of teams participating this year, here are some of the changes we had to make:

Team Registration: Wednesday January 21st 7 pm to 9 pm at the Clarion Hotel Maingate West. ( Coaches Only )

Coaches meeting: Thursday January 22nd 9:30 AM. @ the Clarion Hotel Maingate West.

Game Time: Thursday January 22nd @ 1:00 PM.

** Eight teams will have to play two games on Thursday 22nd and every team will play at least one game that date.

Editor’s note: The AAU tournament started in 2000 with just 8 teams. It grew quickly to 16, 24, 28, and finally a full 32 team bracket for the past several years. Fastpitchwest, Maddysphotos and Ballparkradio have had the privilege of covering the event since 2004, and we’ll be there in 2009, our sixth consecutive year, for the biggest AAU tournament ever, bursting at the seams with forty (count ’em, 40) teams. The broadcast program on Ballparkradio grew dramatically last year, to a ten game schedule, with the Kyle Smith, Blair Setford and Billy Hillhouse in the booth. Haven’t drawn the broadcast schedule for 2009 yet, but we’ll post when we do. Forty Teams !

For a look back at last year’s Photo Galleries — one of Maddy’s largest ever — click here. The first set of smiling faces that will greet you belong to the 2008 AAU International Champions, Mac’s Sprayers.

Premier Men’s Club to Host Tournament – New Zealand

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

October 25,26, 27th 2008

Greetings,

Attached are details of the Premier Men’s Club tournament that I am hosting on Labour Weekend. At present we have 8 teams attending. It is the 2nd annual running of the event and was established to introduce top level club softball back to the region. 1990 was the last time Nelson Softball hosted an invitational event of the this calibre. It is also an opportunity to host a regular event at the Saxton Field Softball Complex that is also the host to the National Under 19’s Boys tournament on January the 9th-12th 2009.

There will be 12 past or present Black Sox National Team members participating including Gareth Cook, Daniel Milne, Stephen Ratu, Paul De Latour, Darren Davies, Blair Murphy and Mike Gaiger ( Parklands Christchurch United) Clayton Ellis (Richmond Keas-CHCH) Stacy McLean, Craig Wallace( Poneke Kilbirnie- Wellington) Travis Wilson (Papanui-CHCH) and host Marty Grant (Stoke Eagles)

In 2007 PCU had a relatively easy run through the tournament and Mike Gaiger picked up the Most Valuable Player and Pitcher Awards. This year they will be tested by new entrants Poneke Kilbirnie, Richmond Keas. Papanui return as the runners up and Stoke Eagles will be looking to make their second final of the brief 2008 season to back up and improve on the 5-0 loss to Richmond Keas in the Spring Shootout in Christchurch in late September.

The tournament is the host of the only Home Run Derby Contest in the New Zealand season and will see the returning champion, and ex Waimea College student, Casey Eden return to defend his title and also play the tournament for the Stoke Eagles, as a loan player.

On Saturday night the teams will be hosted by Marty Grant and the Shooters Bar, for a private function, tickets are available at the tournament.

Games begin on Saturday morning at 9-00am and the final is scheduled for Monday at 3-00pm.

Teams.

Parklands Christchurch United (defending champions)
Stoke Eagles ( Host team)
Waimea Eagles (Nelson)
United Titans (Nelson)
Papanui (CHCH)
Richmond Keas (CHCH)
Wairau (Blenheim)
Poneke Kilbirnie (Wellington)

ISF Junior Men’s World Championships Featured in Latest Issue of Softball Magazine

Monday, October 13th, 2008

The latest issue of Softball Magazine (“The Sports Illustrated of Softball”) is out on newstands and includes Fastpitchwest’s feature story on the 2008 ISF Junior Men’s World Championships, held in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada earlier this year, “G’day for Gold”.

The magazine has a new printer doing their work, and the results are dramatic. Maddy’s full color photos that accompany the story “pop” off the pages. If you don’t subscribe, but want to, click here for more information. Since 2004, the magazine has included regular features on men’s fastpitch, including the AAU, Red Rock, Rose Cup, ISC and ISC II tournaments, and special features like the current one on the ISF Jr. Worlds and the Texaco Pirates tournament in the Bahamas.

If you want to get your hands on a copy of the latest issue, you can send a self-addressed stamped envelope (about $3.00 worth of U.S. postage), to Fastpitchwest, PO Box 961, Los Alamitos, CA 90720.

Past features from Fastpitchwest published in the magazine can be viewed by clicking the “Softball Magazine” menu button on our website, or directly, here. (Give the pages a little time to load, as the full color PDF’s are large files)

Information on where to find “Softball Magazine” below the jump.
