The 2010 Danish Fastpitch Softball Championships

Article submitted by:
Christina Laub Frank – Media Committee ll The Danish Softball Federation

The men’s final at the 2010 Danish Fastpitch Softball Championships, held on Saturday October 2nd, showcased some of the best softball players in Europe right now.

The Teams
Hørsholm Hurricanes, runner-up in 2009, faced Stenløse Bulls for the ninth time this season.
Both teams have national team players onboard who helped win the European Championship, when Denmark beat the Czech Republic 5-2.
The National Championship final was a repetition of the European Cup Winners Cup final in Prague this summer, where Hørsholm Hurricanes beat Stenløse Bulls 4-1.
The Danes cashed in on the awards at both championships: Bulls’ pitcher, Kim Hansen, was awarded Best Pitcher at the 2010 Men’s European Cup Winners Cup, while Daniel “Charlie” Julenon was awarded both Best Batter and Most Valuable Plauer at the European Championship.
Valdemar Terkelsen, Hurricanes, was awarded Best Batter as well as Most Valuable Player at the European Cup Winners Cup.

Men’s Final
Bulls led by 2-0 after the first inning; a single from Anders Jørgensen, followed by a long triple from Jesper Low manufactured the first run and a perfectly executed squeeze-play by Martin Simonsen gave the second run. Bulls dominated and it began to look like a sure victory for them. However, in the fourth inning Frederik Terkelsen, Hurricanes, hit a long, hard ball and made it to second base against all odds. Earlier this year, the 23 year-old super talent won the ISC Men’s World Fastball Tournament in Michigan, USA, with his Canadian team, Jarvis Travelers. Now he was back in Denmark to help his Danish club team win the final.

With Frederik Terkelsen on second, Julius Veeris came up to bat. The Dutch player was brought in just for this one game and he was about to prove his worth. A homerun said it all and brought the score to 2-2. Hurricanes came to life and in the bottom of the sixth made the decisive plays.

Thomas Hansen singled and Frederik Terkelsen managed to force an error on the Bulls infield. Julius Veeris was given an intentional walk, making it bases loaded with Dennis Kihlgast coming up. He singled, scoring two more runs. Anders Hansen followed with a sac fly and Rody Stam’s grounder in the infield drove in yet another run, making it 5-2 – the final score.

Individual Awards men’s:
Best Pitcher: Martin Holmberg, Hørsholm Hurricanes (ERA 2.00)
Best Batter: Julius Veeris, Hørsholm Hurricanes (AVG .500)
Most Valuable Player: Julius Veeris, Hørsholm Hurricanes

Women’s Final
The women’s final saw Copenhagen Barracudas reclaim the title for the second year in a row, beating United 7-1.

Individual Awards women’s:
Best Pitcher: Nana Rasmussen, Copenhagen Barracudas (ERA 1.00)
Best Batter: Pia Jacobsen, Copenhagen Barracudas (AVG .750)
Most Valuable Player: Pia Jacobsen, Copenhagen Barracudas

Softball coaches decry poor competition
MOSAH MOKGANEDI
CORRESPONDENT

After returning from the Zone VI championships held in Lesotho, the coaches of the victorious softball teams have decried the poor competition at the annual tournament. The event attracted only four countries, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and South Africa.

Namibia failed to field a team in the women’s competition. Botswana has dominated the tournament over the years, but coaches believe the players are not benefiting from the competition. Coach of the men team, Bobby Khupe said they are concerned about the low number of countries that participate in the competition.

The men’s team finished top after winning all its six games while their female counterparts were victorious in all their four assignments.
Khupe said that besides South Africa, they are not learning anything new from other countries.

Only Botswana, Lesotho and South Africa and a few countries have consistently participated in the competition. Some countries have failed to send teams citing financial constraints.

Khupe said poor competition at the Zone VI Championships has seen the Botswana teams faring badly in international tournaments.
He said winning the Zone VI competitions makes Botswana teams complacent. He said they plan to invite teams from outside Africa for friendly games. Khupe attributed their good run at the Zone VI to solid defence and good batting. He said their concentration has improved over the years.

The women team’s coach, Titeo Mangope concurs that competing in the Zone VI competitions is no longer beneficial. He said the tournament has been stagnant for sometime and Botswana needs to compete in challenging events.

“This time, we took a team of young players but we still beat our competitors who brought experienced players. This means the competition is stagnant,” Mangope said. He said countries like Zimbabwe, which have shown promise in the past, failed to send a team.

One positive that he draws from the competition is that his side was able to beat South Africa, a side which is better resourced.

Editor’s note: Class “A” is now called “Open”, the 50+ is now “Masters” instead of Seniors, and they’ve added a 60+ “Seniors” division. Unless I missed an earlier announcement, this is new for 2012. Regular readers will recall my objection to calling 50+ “seniors”, especially in this day and age, when athletes are competing longer. Good moves on the latter two (50+ and 60+). What’s behind the change of “A” to “Open”?

The one I find most puzzling though, is the “C” division. They split this “national” tournament into two divisions a couple of years ago. This year the “C” (half) East national is in Salem Virginia. OK. But the “C” (half) national West is in Mankato Minnesota.

Don’t get me wrong — Mankato Minnesota is a great fastball town — and will be hosting the men’s open and B the national tournaments in 2012. I have not have the pleasure of going to Mankato yet, but I’m old enough to remember the Happy Chef teams, and have heard great things from the NAFA teams that play there. But last time I looked Mankato Minnesota is in the central time zone, two hours, in two time zones away from the West Coast. Minnesota West?

Mankato is EAST of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, and California.

In 2009, the first year that they split the “C” division, the Eastern half was in Decatur Illinois, while the Western half was in Hastings Nebraska. Or was it the other way around? No matter – both were in the central time zone, just as is the case in 2012. When they split up the “C” division 2009, the most common reason I heard was to save teams the travel expense of going cross-country. That may well be working out for class “C” teams in the central and eastern time zone, but how about those out west?

It’s not as if the West Coast hasn’t supported the ASA “C” Nationals. When Prescott Arizona hosted the “C” (half) national in 2008, roughly half of the 50 teams, give or take, came from California, and more from the western region. An even larger number when Stockton California hosted the tournament in 2005. Ah well. I do understand that host cities are hard to come by, especially good ones like Mankato. This year’s “C” East and West are a bit more balanced, Ohio for the East and Tuscon Arizona for the West.

Miss the list for 2011? They’re listed after the jump.
