Portland Rose Cup All-Star Correction (Scott Newitt) & More!

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

From Tom Ree, Rose Cup Tournament Advisor and former TD:

Portland, Oregon – June 28, 2005

Portland All-Star Correction (Scott Newitt) & More!

Scott Newitt (OF) from the Rose Cup Champion Vancouver BC Grey Sox was an All-Star Selection this past weekend in Portland. His name was inadvertently left off the list for publication. Scott & his Vancouver team had an awesome tournament. The Vancouver Grey Sox put on a tremendous show for the fans in Portland. Conrad Margolis & Larry Kancs were all smiles and with good reason.

We would like to give a special thanks to Doc Simmons, Steve Kooser & the Broken Bow Spirit team who traveled a great distance to attend this years event. The 2004 ISC Champions were runnaway winners of the 2004 Rose Cup. Bow may not have been at full strength over the weekend, but made no excuses. They are a class act on and off the field and such a pleasure to watch play. I’d pay to watch their rematch at the Vancouver Challenge next month. That should be a dandy!

Jimmy Williamson and his JRW & Associates team lost a couple of pitchers the day before the tournament and a third two weeks prior. So, they show up with one horse by the name of Dave Drotzman in the circle and play some very respectable ball. A lot of teams would have bailed, but not these guys – they came to battle. Jim Williamson also assisted on other tournament projects. The guy is a computer wizard. Good luck at ISC II’s guys.

Joe Bodle with Bodle Chiropractic came down from Des Moines, Washington with only one regular pitcher on his roster. Thanks Joe – there is something special about these iron man teams that are short handed and show up and battle. BTW, we spelled their name wrong for the second time on the t-shirts.. collectors items, Joe?

We appreciate the many thanks we have received, but, frankly this tournament is successful because of the teams that come to Portland and put on such a tremendous show. On behalf of PMSA, Tournament Director Roger Jones, Assistant Director John Fitzgerald, ASA Commissioner Ron Boley & myself, we thank each of the teams that came to the tournament.

In addition, we would like to tip our hats to Jim & Maddy Flanagan from www.fastpitchwest.com who flew up from the L.A. area to cover the event and also broadcast some of the games on www.ballparkradio.com. Your unselfish & generous contributions to the tournament and the game are truly amazing.

The Rose Cup Committee had several new faces this year and a lot was learned on what needs to be done to make future events even better. While we have several ideas of our own, we welcome any comments or recommendations for next years Rose Cup. We hope to see many, if not all, of you back next year!

Thank-you all,

Thomas Ree

ISF 2005 – Day five report – Aussies, Kiwis still perfect; Bobby Sill rallies Canada over USA

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

Aussies, Kiwi’s remain undefeated at
Junior Men’s World Softball ch’ship

Bobby Sill caps of six run sixth with three run blast in 6-2 win

  • SUMMERSIDE – Tuesday turned out to be a day of decision making at the ISF 2005 Junior Men’s World Softball Championship at Queen Elizabeth Park’s VIV Field in Summerside.
The game between Australia and Japan many thought was a sign of the two teams that will be in Sunday’s championship gold medal game while the Battle of North America between Canada and the U.S. could, in the end, be a make or break game for either team in their quest to make the top four and into the semi-finals.
  • Australia remained undefeated with a nail-biting 5-0 win over Japan, while Bobby Sill of Brookfield capped of a six run sixth with a three-run blast as Canada rallied for a 6-2 win over the U.S.A. In other action at the nine-team, 10-day championship, New Zealand got by Mexico 6-4 to improve to 5-0 at the championship; the Czech Republic used a seven run sixth in an 11-2 beating of Denmark.

  • For five innings, United States pitcher John Kelly had Team Canada in check and held a 2-0 lead. Then came the sixth. Team Canada woke up, scoring six runs thanks to tan adrenaline rush from the 2700 fans cheering them on for a much needed 6-2 win. Kelly walked Mathieu Roy of St. Gervais, Que. (0-2), then Justin Gill of Colleris, NL (2-3, run scored) singled before Bryan Abrey of Richymond, B.C. (1-2, rbi, run scored) brought Roy home. Kelly struck out slugger Jonathan Kane of Conception Bay South, NL (0-2, walk) before Ben Tee of
Napnee, Ont. (1-3, run scored) hit a two-run double that scored Gill and Abrey. Nate Bauman of Elmira, Ont. (0-2) then flied out and Kelly then walked Brad Fogal of Sharron, Ont. (1-2) without pitching to him. Bobby Sill of Brookfield, N.S. (1-2) then came to the plate and made Kelly pay with a one strike, three-run blast that went over two tenst with vendors in them beyond the elgft field scoreboardto secure the win. Tyson Barkman picks up the win coming on in relief of starter Jonathan Kane. Barkamn of Abbotsford, B.C. went three and two third innings
allowing one run on one hit and fanning seven. Kane pitched three and one third innings allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out five. Kelly walked three and struck out six in the loss.
  • Australia used three long balls and another solid outing from Adam Folkard as they handed Japan their first loss of the ISF 2005 Junior Men’s World Softball Championship 5-1 before 2,00 fans at Queen Elizabeth Park’s VIV Field in Sumemrside. The win allows Australia to keep pace with their counterparts from New Zealand and sets the stage for an interesting matchup between the two friendly off the field countries Wednesday at VIV Field at 6 p.m. Ryan Van Coevorden (1-2) got things started when he drove home pinch runner Andrew Ratten from second base with the first run of the game in the fourth inning. They would add three more in the fifth off Japan starter Hayami Takahashi. Toshiyuki Sakamoto came on in relief allowing
one run on one hit in two and on third innings pitched while striking out two. Other top batters for the Lindsey Carroll-coached Colts were Matt Torpey (1-3, home run), Travis Southam (1-3, double), Shaun Mason (2-2, run scored, RBI, home run), Jon Hudson (1-2, two-run home run, run scored) and Jamie Sheehan (1-2, run scored). For Japan, Daisuke Kitaoka (1-2), Shinji Kawamura (1-2) and Masayuki Shimoto (1-3, RBI) was all the offense. Folkard struck out 16 hitters in seven innings of work allowing just three hits and one run in the win.

Bernard Hale (2-3, double, two-run home run) led the Kiwi’s as they used a three run first inning to power over the Mexicans 6-4 before 450 fans during the first game of day five at the ISF 2005 Junior Men’s World Softball Championship at Queen Elizabeth Park’s VIV Field in Summerside. Other top batters for New Zealand was David Butler (2-3, run scored,
stolen base), Mario Herbert (1-3, stolen base, run scored), Penese Iosefo (1-2, home run, run scored) and Tyson Byrne (1-3). For Mexico, Gustavo Benitez (2-4, home run, two RBI, run scored), Johel Pedroza (2-2, RBI), Wilfredo Castanos (1-2, run scored, double), Jesus
Diaz (1-1, stolen base) and Ruben Delgaldillo (1-4, run scored). Iosefo went the distance allowing four runs on eight hits walking two and striking out six to earn the victory. Losing pitcher Sergio de la Rosa went four and two third innings allowing five runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out one. Carlos Lopez went one and one third innings allowing one run and walking one in relief. In what was a very close game, Denmark trailed 2-1, 3-1 and 4-1, before the Czech offense exploded for the huge seventh inning led by Tomas Benda (3-4, triple, home run, three runs scored, four RBI), Jan Pospisil (1-3, run scored), Jiri Nezbeda (1-2, run scored), Bohumir Adamec (1-2, run scored, double, RBI) and David Kramar (1-4, double, run scored). For the young Danes, Nicojal Bloksted (1-1, caught stealing), Valdemar Brask Terkelsen (1-2, run scored, double), Frederik Brask Terkelsen (1-3, double) and Jeppe Bjerre (1-2, stolen base) did the damage. Ondrej Malecek pitched the complete game, four-hitter allowing two runs,
walking four while sitting down 10 Dane batters. Terkelsen went the complete game, allowing 11 runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out four in picking up the loss.

Sill power rallies Canada over U.S.

  • SUMMERSIDE – For five innings, United States pitcher John Kelly had Team Canada in check and held a 2-0 lead. Then came the sixth. Team Canada woke up, scoring six runs thanks to tan adrenaline rush from the 2700 fans cheering them on for a much needed 6-2 win Tuesday night to cap off day five action at the ISF 2005 Junior Men’s World Softball Championship at Queen Elizabeth Park’s VIV Field in Summerside. Kelly walked Mathieu Roy of St. Gervais, Que. (0-2), then Justin Gill of Colleris, NL (2-3, run scored) singled before Bryan Abrey of Richymond, B.C. (1-2, rbi, RUN SCORED) brought Roy home. Kelly struck out slugger Jonathan Kane of Conception Bay South, NL (0-2, walk) before Ben Tee of Napnee, Ont. (1-3, run scored) hit a two-run double that scored Gill and Abrey. Nate Bauman of Elmira, Ont. (0-2) then flied out and Kelly then walked Brad Fogal of Sharron, Ont. (1-2) without pitching to him. In ISF action, a pitcher can signal four fingers to the umpire if he wants to issue the free pass.

Bobby Sill of Brookfield, N.S. (1-2) then came to the plate and made Kelly pay with a one strike, three-run blast that went over two tents with vendors in them beyond the left field coreboard to secure the win. Tyson Barkman picks up the win coming on in relief of starter Jonathan
Kane. Barkamn of Abbotsford, B.C. went three and two third innings allowing one run on one hit and fanning seven. Kane pitched three and one third innings allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out five. Kelly walked three and struck out six in the loss. The win moves Canada to 4-1 and tied with Japan for third spot while dropping the U.S. to 2-3 and currently out of the top four positioning to make the playoffs.

  • USA Jr. Men Take on Canada Tonight in Pivotal Game

    Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

    Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada

The USA Jr. Men’s team takes on Canada tonight at 8pm (ADT, one hour ahead of eastern time), in a pivotal game in the ISF Jr World Championships in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The young men are coming off a big 8-1 win over Argentina that runs their record to 2-2. They opened the tournament with a win over Czech Republic, then lost to the two-time defending champions, Australia, lost a close one to New Zealand, followed by the win over Argentina.

The top four teams make it to the playoff round this weekend. Right now, the USA Jr. Men sit in fifth place, behind New Zealand (5-0), Australia (4-0), Japan (4-0), and Canada (3-1). Canada still has to play Australia, but the USA still has Japan on the schedule.

Reports out of Summerside indicate that Japan may be the strongest overall team, though Australia with the strongest pitching in Adam Folkard. Folkard is only 19, but busting the radar gun at 80 plus and is “the real deal”. He will pitch with the Fargo IS Knights this summer, alongside Michael White in the ISC World Tournament. Going into the tournament, many prognosticators had Australia, New Zealand and Canada as the favorites, with Japan a question mark. Japan is proving itself, including a win already over Canada, so a win tonight over Canada would go a long way towards their goal of making the medal round “Final Four”.

Four years ago, the team looked overmatched, finishing ninth, so they have already gone a long way to improving on that. One knowledgeable source said that the USA kids look to be the most athletic team in the tournament, just not as much experience as some of the other sides.

It looks like we’ll get some info during the USA vs. Canada game, so watch this post for updated information during the game.

Australia takes on Japan in a 6pm battle of unbeatens. Again, that’s PEI time (ADT), one hour ahead of EST, and 4 hours ahead of us. That translates to a 4pm start for the USA-Canada game on the west coast. I’m told the games are running a little behind, so it might not start right on time.

Kevin Castillo, Jason Loe and Camden Decker Lead the Way for USA Jr. Men in Win Over Argentina

    Monday, June 27th, 2005

Three-man attack powers U.S. over Argentina SUMMERSIDE – The U.S. got down early but used a big game from three key players en route to an 8-1, five-inning win over Argentina on day four at the ISF 2005 Junior Men’s World Softball Championship at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Field in Summerside. The crowd of about 750 fans saw Argentina score the first run of the game when Federico Ederet came around and crossed the plate on an illegal pitch after reaching base on a double. but that would be all the runs the Eduardo and Francisco Sabate coached team would manage against a stingy American defence. The U.S. would strike back with eight runs in the third inning led by leadoff hitter Jason Loe (3-4, double, three RBI), Kevin Castillo (2-3, home run, run scored, two RBI) and designated hitter Camden Decker (2-2, triple, two runs scored, two RBI) and Andy Matthews (1-3, run scored). For Argentina, Ederet (1-2, run scored, double), Francisco Regolli (1-2) and Emiliano Tristram Anea (1-2) led the offence. Winning pitcher John Kelly went four and two third innings allowing one run on three hits, walking two and striking out one. Losing pitcher Mauricio Emmanuel Boss went two and two third innings allowing four runs on three hits, striking out three. Nelson Ruiz went one and two third innings giving up four runs on three hits, walking two and fanning three. Max Montero went two third innings walking two and striking out one. http://www.2005worldsoftball.com

Also, here is the report from USA Softball’s Brian McCall:

USA Junior Men rebound with run-rule win over Argentina

Summerside, P.E.I., Canada—The USA Softball Junior Men evened their
record at 2-2 with an 8-1 run-rule victory over Argentina on day four of the ISF Junior Men’s World Championships. The win ends a two game skid for the Red, White and Blue and keeps its hopes alive for a spot in the championship finals.

Argentina took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after the lead-off batter doubled and scored on an illegal pitch. While some thought an upset was in the making, the U.S. responded in the
third scoring eight runs to take a comfortable 8-1 lead. Cameron Decker (Aurora, Ill.) led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Jason Loe (Sioux Falls, SD. With two outs and a runner on Kevin Castillo (Long Beach, Calif.) hit his first home run of the tournament to give the U.S. a 3-1 lead. The two out rally continued with a single by Andy Mathews (Cameron, Iowa, a walk to Matt Bezzant (Cedar Hills, Utah) and a single by Evan O’Reilly San Luis Obispo, Calif.) to load the bases. A walk to Bobby Olson (Amboy, Minn.) drove in a fourth run of the inning
and left the bases loaded. Decker, who had led off the inning with a triple, came through again with single that scored two runs to stretch the lead to 6-1. The final two runs of the inning were credited to Loe who doubled for an 8-1 lead.

John Kelly (Chester, Iowa) was solid in the circle for the U.S. allowing only one run on three hits to improve to 2-1 at the World Championships. Three different U.S. players had multiple hits in the game including Loe who went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Castillo was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI while Decker was perfect at 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI.

Currently sitting in fifth place in the overall standing, the U.S. will need to carry this momentum into Tuesday’s match-up with Canada at 6 p.m. CST in order to keep its hopes alive for a spot in the championship finals. Canada is currently 3-1 in the championship with wins over Mexico,
    Argentina and Czech Republic.

Lack of Pitching Sinks JRW & Associates at Rose Cup

    Monday, June 27th, 2005

    Monday June 27th, 2005

Portland, Oregon – JRW & Associates of Yakima, WA ended up with one pitcher on Saturday morning, June 24th, as they began Round Robin play in the 14 team Rose Cup. As a result, a disheartened JRW team went 0-3 in RR play and lost a Sunday morning single elimination game to eventual runner-up CR/DeMarini of Portland.

One pitcher recently went to the hospital with three blood clots in his leg and hasn’t pitched in the two weeks since. Then the team learned on Friday afternoon that the second pitcher could not get out of his work commitments (ate an $800 plane ticket). An OPEN class Calif pitcher had been lobbying to join a team for the Rose Cup. He was contacted early Friday evening and even had checked out the plane schedule to arrive in Portland on Sat morning. At 9:00 PM Friday night, he backed out.

To add to the setback, the JRW team started play with a 10 inning 5-3 loss to the Prince George, B.C. Black Bears. With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th, Dave Drotzmann (JRW) was on 3rd base when there was a passed ball. Dave broke for home, but stopped when catcher Chad Ghostkeeper (PG) made a great recovery. Then he fumbled the throw, but Dave had turned back to third.

An unearned run in that 6th inning allowed JRW to tie the score at 2-2. Another unearned run in the bottom of the 8th allowed JRW to match PG’s run in the first of three International tie-breaker innings.

In the top of the 10th, PG scored two runs on CF Brian Bailey’s single and Kevin Broboske’s Sac Fly. Relief pitcher Colin McKenzie (PG) struck out the side to preserve the victory.

Certainly didn’t need a 10-inning game to start the day with only one pitcher. With a win, JRW might have had 1-½ pitchers (emotionally) ready for the second game.

In the second RR game, the NorCal Mavericks started quick with three first inning runs, then fell behind by two runs because of three errors, but scored 3 runs in the B6 for a 7-5 victory over JRW. Manager Chris Wright let Pitcher Keith Frey struggle thru 5 !/3 innings, thin let ace Sonny Perkins finish up. And finish he did by striking out 4 of the last 5 JRW batters. Sonny also chipped in a 5th inning solo HR.

Pitcher Dave Drotzmann (JRW) also had a solo homer. Dave had 8 K’s and only two walks in a losing effort.

Needing a victory over # 19 ranked Team Rainey to even finish third in their pool in their last RR game, Manager Jim Williamson elected to rest his one pitcher for the next day’s playoff. Two infielders and one outfielder shared the pitching duties in the 13-1 blow-out. One highlight was JRW 2B Don Cawthron’s entry to the game with two outs in Team Rainey’s 7 run third inning. Don struck out his first batter on two pitches for the 3rd out. A second highlight was a single by 21 year old LF Jason Grow (JRW) to break up Villabalos’ no-hitter. SS Paul Reyes had JRW’s second and last hit in the 5th.

In Sunday morning’s single elimination game, eventual Rose Cup runner-up CR/Demarini pounded out 12 hits enroute to a 14-4 victory over JRW.

Center-fielder Kent Zweifel (CR) led the charge with two 3 run homers and a single for 6 RBI’s. In Kent’s first year back from college baseball, he sometimes would strike out 2-3 times a game. Kent takes a very healthy cut and now has certainly made the adjustment to big-time softball. Kent was named to the All-Tournament team. 3B Rob Gehrke (CR) had a solo HR. No surprise as Gehrke hits home runs off everybody.

After struggling in the ISC II qualifier tournament, SS Paul Reyes (JRW) capped off a .333, 3 RBI weekend with a solo HR off Mark Bennett.

Next action for the JRW squad will be the Phil Hunt Memorial Tournament in Everett, WA on July 9-10. This tournament is also a fund-raiser for the Burn Children Recovery Foundation (BCRF).

The weather was perfect all weekend. Many thanks to TD Roger Jones, PDX Metro ASA Commissioner Ron Boley and behind the scenes Tom Ree for an outstanding tournament.
