The 2008 AAU International Tournament Schedule of Games is out.

Reminder to all teams: Please send your AAU Rosters if you haven’t already. Send to jim (at) fastpitchwest.com and we’ll forward to Al’s, or you can send to him direct at fastball (at) pmihrm.com. These rosters just a preview of the teams for fastball fans, so don’t worry if you have changes — these are not official rosters. And if you add players later, we’d be happy to update your posting here (and/or forward to Al).

Speaking of Al’s Fastball, you can find complete information on the tournament at his site by clicking here.. Last we heard, there is a good chance that Al Doran will be in Orlando for the tournament, as he was last year, so the tournament will be well covered for all fastball fans that can’t make it there in person.

Quad Cities to Host 2009 ISC & ISC II

Monday, November 19th, 2007

The Quad Cities of western Illinois and eastern Iowa, will be the hosts for the 2009 ISC World Tournament (August 14 – 22) and ISC II Tournament of Champions (August 19 – 22).

Situated along the banks of the Mississippi River, the Quad Cities are comprised of Davenport and Bettendorf, IA and Moline/East Moline and Rock Island, IL. Combined, they have a population of approximately 400,000 and have excellent access by Interstate highways, I-80, I-74, I-88 and the I-280 belt route encompassing all the communities. Moline has a world class airport with excellent direct service to many cities. Approximate driving time to Quad Cities from some selected cities; Chicago – 3 hours, St. Louis – 4 hours, Des Moines – 1 ½ hours, Rockford, IL – 2 hours and Madison, WI – 3 hours. For both Quad Cities residents and the ISC, returning to Quad Cities will be nostalgic for many as Rock Island, IL hosted the ISC World Tournament a then record 10 times, from 1961 to 1969 and again in 1973. All the tournaments were played in Rock Island’s Douglas Park.

The ISC has been working with Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission since October 2006 and in Kitchener this year, Quad Cities had two representatives attend the 2007 World Tournament in its entirety. Lynn Hunt, CVB Vice President and Milt Hand, Moline Parks & Recreation Director were each in Kitchener for half the tournament, Lynn for the first half and Milt for the second half.

For the first time, the two 2009 tournaments will be played in the same venue. Moline’s Green Valley Complex boasts two separate 4-diamond facilities with 6 of the 8 diamonds capable of playing men’s fastball. The venue has excellent parking and seating capability. The primary 4-diamond facility has a large, well appointed press box and the diamond separations provide ample space for auxiliary seating. They have hosted previous national championships in girls’ classifications and have the infrastructure of volunteers to accommodate the ISC.

The agreement contract also extends a 2011 hosting option to Quad Cities. They must exercise their option by February 2009. Otherwise, the ISC will seek other bidders for 2011 who will present their bids in Quad Cities in August 2009. For more information about Quad Cities and surrounding areas go to www.visitquadcities.com

The agreement to have Quad Cities host us in 2009 was just recently reached so at this time, tournament directors nor headquarters hotels have been determined. This information will be released in the near future. Earlier today, November 19, a media conference was held in Quad Cities to formally announce to their local media that the International Softball Congress is returning to their area in 2009.

From an ISC standpoint, we want to extend a special thanks to Joe Taylor, President/CEO of Quad Cities CVB and Sports Commission, Lynn Hunt(CVB Vice President) and Milt Hand (Moline Parks and Recreation Director). In addition, our thanks to ISC people who have been directly involved in meetings and discussions over the past year; Larry Koberg of nearby Walcott, IA who has served as tournament director for over 20 Iowa ISC Area Tournaments, Pat Sullivan, ISC Regional Commissioner from Dubuque, IA, Wayne Fisher, ISC Developmental Vice President from Iowa City, IA and Eric Wernke, coach of the Quad City Sox team, from Bettendorf, IA. Without the cooperation and involvement of all these people, this agreement would likely have not happened.

Editor’s notes: Mac’s Sprayers…aka last year’s Mac’s Mauraders – the 2007 AAU Champions. Last year’s MVP, Frankie Perez, who provided the most dramatic moment in AAU history with his championship game – extra inning – walk off home run, is back with Macs, but the pitching staff is completely revamped. Last year it was MVPitcher Colin McKenzie and Rob Schweyer, with Schweyer pitching well enough to be co-MVPitcher. But both are gone from Mac’s roster and we see this impressive list, of Jeremy Manley, Robbie O’Brien, BJ Hunhoff, and Sebastian Gervasutti. Just yesterday, we were talking about the five deep staff of the Texaco Pirates. Those bullpens are going to be crowded in Orlando, or maybe the teams will take turns sending the extras to Disneyworld for a day? Nine pitchers between these two teams. Some would say there aren’t enough innings to go around, but remember this is January, so many managers are reluctant to overwork guys that haven’t been pitching on a regular basis. It’s a 32 team, four day tournament, and fatigue does take a toll come Sunday. Even in last year’s championship game, both Mac’s and Broken Bow went through their entire pitching staffs before it was over. I guess if the Boston Red Sox can go to a six man rotation, as some say they will, then nothing wrong with being 4-5 deep in Orlando. Unless, of course, you’re an AAU manager of a team that is still hunting for pitching.

Trivia time: How many players from last year’s AAU Championship team are back in 2008? Answer after the jump. (Looking for the answer to yesterday’s trivia question about the “Four Aces” on Penn Corp? see Texaco Pirates roster post below)

Editor’s notes: Five pitchers! Will any team in Orlando have a pitching staff this deep? I remember when Penn Corp has four of the top pitchers around, they used to refer to them as the “Four Aces”. Trivia bonus points – can anyone name those four pitchers from Penn Corp? (see answer after the jump)

Keep an eye out for the next issue of Softball Magazine, which has a feature story on the team from the Bahamas, “The Real Pirates of the Caribbean”. The team has come a long way since winning the consolation bracket in 2004, finishing third in last year’s event, falling to Broken Bow in the semi-finals.

2008 AAU International Tournament – 32 Teams

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

(click logo for our AAU website)

The AAU International tournament is set to kick off the 2008 season in Orlando, Florida, January 24-27, 2008, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex. The tournament is heading into it’s ninth year, having started in 2000 with just eight teams. The field of teams grew year by year, and has been at 32 for the past three years. Click here to view the past award winners.

The tournament is headed up by Alex Linares of the AAU and ISC Executive Director, Ken Hackmeister. Fastpitchwest will be in Orlando for its fifth consecutive year, providing coverage of the tournament, with selected games being broadcast live on Ballparkradio.com.

The Ballparkradio crew for the 2008 AAU Tournament will be the largest ever, with many of the ISC II crew sitting in. ISC II commish Blair Setford is making his first ever trip to the AAU, and will be in uniform, as a player for the Niagara Storms Fury of Canada, but will also sit in to call some of the action. (shades of Lance Winn). Bill Hillhouse is also expected to see double duty as a player/broadcaster. Fan favorite Kyle Smith will be front and center for much of the action, so you’ll want to be tuned in to catch his latest gems.

More and more people are finding the AAU to be a good chance to sneak away in the middle of winter, with Al Doran and Joe Todd among them last year, and rumor has it they’ll be enjoying the Florida sunshine again for this one. It will be an eventful year for Al Doran in 2008, with his well-deserved induction into the ISC Hall of Fame at Kimberly, Wisconsin, for his service to the game.

Here is the list of 32 teams, via

Last year’s AAU Tournament was an all New York final, and the most dramatic finish ever to an AAU Tournament, with Frankie Perez hitting a walk-off home run in extra innings to win it. An excerpt from our feature story that appeared in Softball Magazine is below, with a link to the full story:

NY Mac’s Marauders Top NY Gremlins 3-1 in 2007 AAU International Final

[ORLANDO] – In one of the most exciting and memorable AAU championship games ever, Mac’s Marauders of Ballston Lake, New York won the 2007 AAU International title with a 3-1, 9 inning win over the New York Gremlins/Broken Bow. Eduardo Leonardo of Mac’s tied the game at 1-1 with a dramatic home run in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Colin McKenzie of Mac’s Marauders was the winning pitcher and took home Outstanding Pitcher award. McKenzie entered the game in the 8th inning in relief of starter Rob Schweyer, while Frankie Perez of Mac’s Marauders won the MVP award on the strength of his game winning walk off home run in the bottom of the 9th.
